Common Misconceptions about the Jets
Isn't it frustrating when a random football fan makes fact-less claims about your favorite teams? The past two years, many football fans have had a plethora of misconceptions about our New York Jets. Look after the jump to see the list. Note* This list is based things I've seen from other fans across SB nation and from my school.
- Bart Scott is the best linebacker on the Jets roster. Dying down lately, but Scott's penchant for talking and Harris's quiet demeanor takes away from the fact that Harris is the superior linebacker.
- Darrelle Revis only began to play at an elite level in 2009. This is a frustrating one...Revis was a starter from day one and was immediately in the upper echelon of corners upon entering the league. By the end of his rookie year he was already elite.
- Rex Ryan talks trash about opposing teams and players. This is one of the most common misconceptions about Rex. People believe he degrades the opposing team when in fact Rex just praises his players (whether they suck or not; Vernon Gholston) or expresses the utmost confidence in them.
- The Jets have a fearsome pass rush. Perhaps not that common, but I have read that belief across other SB Nation blogs a good amount of times. A solid amount of people think the Jets sack the quarterback a good amount, whereas that's an area of concern and we rely on scheme to get to the QB.
- The Jets spend a ridiculous amount of money on FA's and don't build throughout the draft. This is pretty self explanatory but check out GreenBeer's article on this, it's really good. http://www.ganggreennation.com/2011/5/18/2178510/the-jets-a-team-built-through-the-draft
- The Jet's spend money on FA's just like the Washington Redskins. This could not be further from the truth. The Jets spend money for players who fit their scheme and take calculated risks on guys who have been in trouble before. The Redskins throw as much money possible at the biggest name/ talented player, regardless if it runs in the scheme, etc.
Those are just a few examples of thoughts other fans incorrectly have of the Jets, specifically AFC East rivals. Agree? Disagree? Any other additions?

One of the greatest misconceptions about football...
…is that most fans can even understand it. So few analyst give good insight. Guys like Jaws on ESPN do some nice breakdowns but its just the tip of the iceberg in understanding the game. Even probowl voting can be based on reputation. So all the time I hear “that guy sucks”, it upsets me because many positions are hard to follow. A few particular Jets that come to mind are S. Ellis, B. Thomas, Scott, Leonard, Jason Taylor, Pace, E. Smith, even Cotchery at times, Ducasse and Wilson are already busts according to some… it goes on and on. But I say the biggest issue is the certainty of the opinion that goes against the appraisal of a fairly succesful coaching staff.
but check out GreenBeer’s article on this, it’s really good.
Thanks for the shout.
So Let It Be Written, So Let it Be Done.
But Scott and Leonard do suck.

I don't think Leonhard sucks
it’s just he’s really slow for this team, as physical as he can be, he can’t keep up with most of these guys it seems. Just my opinion.

and I think Scott is mediocre
very physical, but mostly just a UDFA who benefited from being in between Suggs and Lewis. We shot ourselves in the foot pursuing him.

Lol our whole linebacker core is two slow to cover as it is
So I’m not going to rag on Jim, a safety.
Bart Scott, Trevor Pryce suck big time. Jim i would give a pass for his ferocious hits and blitzing.

Jim is a big hitter, lets give credit where it is due but his coverage skills r below par.

Trevor Pryce played great for the Jets last season.
I don’t know what you want a 3-4 DT to do, but Trevor Pryce did what the Jets asked of him. I hope he comes back.
He also made crackers last year
taken into consideration the time on the field he spent making low-end backup money, he was pretty darn good for us.

exactly
we’re a top rated defense in this league but according to our own fans, every player on this defense except for Revis sucks.
It’s amazing how our defensive woes (pass rushing) can be attributed to an INSIDE LINEBACKER. Has anyone ever though about maybe the DLine not being good at pass rushing? Or maybe the outside linebacker? Immediately blaming guys like Scott and Leonard for a poor pass rush is absolutely mind blowing.
And then we’re praising a QB and offense that gets shut out of the 1st Quarter and perhaps even 1st Half of almost every game.
Defensive woes extend upon pass rushing
Solid tackling was both in the open and back fields was a major problem.

I will agree with that.
I feel like the linebackers outside of Harris were very inconsistent with there tackling.
you make it sound like we're the 30th ranked Defense
there’s a reason everyone wanted us to draft an OLB or DE, it’s because of our lack of a pass rush. Again, what ranked Defense were we last year and the year before?
Now imagine we were able to hold all those 3rd and 20s and maybe produce even more of them with a solid DE and rushing OLBs…then what are you going to say? Because Scott was not the problem.
Using the almighty PowerBar logic
I could just as easily say pass rushing wasn’t the problem because we were ranked high the last two years. On top of that, we didn’t even draft at either of those positions except for K. Ellis who MIGHT play at end sometimes. Seems to me the coaches were far more concerned with reinforcing the middle than the pass rushing positions. The only thing they’ve done at those positions were to cut J.T., Gholston, and Jenkins who they had moved to end.

we didn't draft at DE?
then who’s Muhammed Wilkerson? The reason they drafted Ellis and Wilkerson is because they can help with the pass rush. They’re young and athletic enough to play more than one position and not be relegated to just ‘run stopper’.
It’s been a point many times over that 3-4 ends are supposed to tie up multiple linemen and free up the LBs to rush the QB. I think this is what Rex had in mind to improve his pass rush as well as to be able mix and match his line with his creativity. In other words, was the pass rush relatively non-existent because the LBs can’t get to the QB? Or because the DLine couldn’t tie up it’s blockers to let the LBs work? I think it’s a combination of the two, but obviously Rex thought he could solve the problem by drafting a new line.
I think there’s a good reason why our pass rush was more effective with a guy like Jenkins on the line.
and about my 'almighty logic'
you’re right, because ‘pass rushing wasn’t the problem’ in the overall picture. Our team was hampered by an offense that only plays for a half and doesn’t show up until the 2nd Quarter.
You don’t think we’d be holding that trophy if our offense was anywhere near as prolific as the Packers or the Saints? If the Jets had even put up points in the first quarter things might have been totally different. If you think our offense has no fault in our performance last year then I don’t know what to say.
I pretty much agree
Especially on the first four. Rex praises teams like Pittsburgh all the time.
I also agree that our free agency moves, although sometimes quite pricey or notable, are WAY smarter than Washington’s.

Agreed...
I can’t stand hearing people say we’re ‘buying a Super Bowl’. Holmes was attained for a 5th rounder, LT for just over $2 mil, and I believe Braylon can by way of trades. Drives me mad when knowledgeable fans make general misconceptions about the Jets simply because they don’t like them. A couple more to add to the list
1. Braylon Edwards can’t catch a cold.
(2 drops last season)
2. Rex Ryan is unprofessional.
(When he threw his headset in the AFC Championship Game, mind you this one sparked a full blown out argument.)
Both of those complaints came from my brother-in-law… also the worlds biggest Steeler fan.
To be fair
Braylon had some BRICK hands in Cleveland, I totally understand why people still think that, even though his improvements with the Jets have been outstanding.
My only problem with Rex is that he doesn’t step in and yell at his offensive unit more often for their clock management problems.

Couldn't Agree More
I think the reason I’m so high on him is because of his turnaround. When you look at the heart he’s been playing with lately(playoffs) it’s almost hard to believe it’s the same person.
As for Rex, I’m just happy he learned not to overload blitz every down… took a few games, but he finally learned it.
yes, i agree
wish he had some O knowledge at all, might help us if our entire O wasn’t in the hands of a man so stupid it blows my mind
"it's not easy being green"-kermit the frog
"we the mets are an improved ball club, now we lose in extra innings"-casy stengal
i cant spell a nosebleed
he's gone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!OLIE PEREZ IS GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That last point was actually true... in 2008
when we got Jenkins, Pace, Woody, and Favre (though that was a trade). But it was very Redskins-like. When you think about it, it’s not really surprising the way things turned out that season!
Eh I disagree.
For one, Jenkins was a boom/bust FA that was relatively cheap. It was also a move the Jets had to make. 3-4 Defenses really flourish with a big strong NT to man the line and that’s what Jenkins did. Pace, albeit overpaid, filled a pass rushing void from the 2007 team that was just plain bad. Woody turned out to be a good signing for us and has been nothing but steady; his signing was considered a ‘splash’ in the FA market.
With the Redskins though, they’re know for throwing money at big name FA’s regardless if it fits their scheme. Take Haynseworth for example, they moved him to NT even though he was much more dominant in the Titans scheme. Or them giving up on Mcnabb after one season.
