Courtney Smith, WR, South Alabama

The Jets recently brought in WR Courtney Smith for a workout.  He is 6'4" and 220 lbs.  Great size.  But he was not invited to the combine presumably because he didn't have huge production and he is from a small school.  He is projected to go in the 7th round or undrafted.  Here is the interesting thing... at his pro day he ran a 4.65 40 but an unamed AFC scout later said he wasn't getting a proper jump at the start and should probably be able to run a 4.5 40.

More after the jump.

I thought that last part was interesting in terms of what scouts are able to determine during these workouts.  We only see the numbers as they are listed, but obviously the scouts being there are actually able to see a lot more.  Take a guy like Dontay Moch who is able to run a 4.3 at one point, and claims to have even run a 4.2.  Well, he was a track and field guy at one point and that practice might not actually make him faster but rather better at getting a jump at the whistle which in turn improves his 40 time.

Other notable stats:  39 catches for 603 yards and 5 TDs as a senior.  6.98 3 cone drill.  32 vertical leap.  18 reps of 225 lbs.  The 3 cone drill is pretty fast and lends credibility to that scout's claim.  I thought that was interesting.

Anyway, I was unable to find any good tape.  I actually ended up watching Courtney Thorne-Smith in a bikini on youtube until I remembered what I was there to do.

Maybe not a bad pickup in the 7th.  But certainly developmental.
