Gabe Carimi vs. Cameron Heyward (via AloAloysius)
This post is to serve a dual function. First, I want to introduce some of you to Gabe Carimi. There's been some discussion of him lately and I know not everybody has the time/inclination to search for clips and read scouting reports. So if thats you, here you go. Second, I wanted to show why I don't like Cameron Heyward (DL prospect that many have mocked to the Jets).
Carimi: I really don't know enough about offensive line play to speak with any sort of intelligence about it. I do like his size and athleticism, his nasty demeanor, and the way he seems to consistently get into his man off scrimmage and create drive. But I really don't have any kind of eye for OLs, so here's a scouting report on him from one of my favorite draft sites.
Heyward: Now this clip shows why I don't like Heyward in a nutshell. He's consistently slow out of his stance, and Carimi always seems to be able to beat him to the punch, which is half the battle. Now Carimi is considered a good prospect, but by no means is he a world beater. He's probably at the level of a decent NFL lineman at the moment with room to grow. And he OWNED Heyward. Heyward's entire game is predicated on power. And he simply won't be able to overpower NFL o-linemen. He can't get off the snap, he's not very active, he's got no moves, and he doesn't disengage well at all. He's either bull rushing into the backfield or he isn't. And as we see against NFL level talent like Carimi, he just isn't.
Some favorite moments in the clip:
1:30 -- pass play, Carimi engages Heyward and rides him to the outside to create a nice pocket for his QB, then he just chucks him like a punk.
1:56 -- straight lead iso right up the gut. Carimi engages Heyward directly and drives him 5 yards down field.
0:35 -- Wisconsin has it inside the 5 and is threatening to score. They run a lead iso that gets stuffed. But Carimi punks Heyward in their match-up. Heyward tries to shoot inside on Carimi and Gabe catches him and drives his ass into the ground almost immediately.
