has rex ryan let us down on defence
i have been looking thru the players we have gotten from the draft and FA's since rex ryan took over as coach for the new york jets and came upon this question .
what quality players has rex brought in on defence ?
so i did a list of players we have signed on both sides of the ball and it seems the quality we have was all on the offensive side of the ball.
there has been some decent aquisitions on defence like poole and cro but nobody really stands out as a quality signing . look at the players we have lost in kerry rhodes and kris jenkins would nulify the players brought in .
the list on defence and grades are
lito shepard F
bart scott C+
trevor price C
jim leonard B-
brodney poole B-
kyle wilson D
antonio cromartie B
jason taylor C
the list on offence and grades are
mark sanchez B+
shonn green B
matt slauson B-
braylon edwards A-
vlad ducasse D
joe mcknight D
john conner C-
LT B
santonio holmes A
there is a stark contrast in the quality of players we have signed for offence in comparrison to the players we have signed on defence .i know the offence needed more help but i would have thought that we would have seen maybe two players on defence that would have been top quality . i'm not convinced that rex can find us these types of players until one of the above defensive players or any new recruits we draft/sign becomes an integral part of the defence that we would seriously miss if they got injured .
maybe some of those guys need more time but the fact we have so many holes on defence to fill is a reflection on the ammount of stop gaps / failures rex has signed over his 2 years as head coach.

I would agree he has made some bad signings...
But that’s not entirely his fault. He is also still a great defensive coach.
Dude is a failure
Rex only has led the jets to 2 afc Cahmpionship games while having a Rookie and sophmore QB, He only stopped tom brady and the “unbeatable” Pats with a genius Defensive scheme. Rex was voted the most player friendly coach by the players at the beginging of the season.
Really, when rex got here and said the jets will have the best D in the league i laughed and said maybe in 2-3 years but he came in and made the Jets D an actual concern to other teams, I guess youd like to resign Mangini or maybe herm edwards

A Lot To Say Here
1st, remember that the defense ranked in the top 3 for the last two years. The guys that we have have each done a roll to bring this defense to where it is.
2nd, I don’t agree with your grades. Lito may not have been great but you can’t assign an F to a starting corner on a number 1 defense. And Talor and Price were brought in as old roll players. For what they did I would assign a B. And I think Leonard and Scott served their purpose of running the D on the field.
3rd, you have to admit that he quickly took over and improved the defense plugging holes with some stop gap players – Devito, Pouha, E. Smith. Pretty impressive.
4th, I think you need to give this thing a little more time. Wilson has been here one year. Rex has been here two. Give them some time.
So Let It Be Written, So Let it Be Done.
The scheme has made our team better
Unless I’m mistaken Revis Island wasn’t around in the Mangini Era, Revis was good but not our Revis, Plus they have been a top 3 defense two years in a row, as well as bringing us to the AFC championship game back to back years, winning more Playoff games as a head coach in Jets History(I’m pretty sure) by beating the likes of the Unstoppable 2009-2010 season Chargers, The 2010-2011 colts and Patriots using good defense
The one place where his defense, whether his faults or the players fault, has been in the AFC championship game, against the colts it was pass defense in the second half and against the steelers it was the run defense, so That’s where he needs to get better
Rex Ryan is a great HC and a great Defensive Mind
i take all points on board
except that lito does deserve an F . he was a huge let down b4 he left the eagles , was the weak link on our pass defence and never lived up to the pro bowl player he was .i would also say rex had a hand in every FA signing we had .
i’d also like to point out i’m not hating on rex as our head coach , i wouldn’t swap him for anyone but as fans we have to admit that its 1 part of the job he needs to do better .
Other than hating on the players that were part of two top three defenses in 2 years, I don’t know what you think Rex could have done different. Don’t forget a lot of money was tied up in the injured Jenkins. But again, that has nothing to do with Rex. He had Pouha ready to jump in.
So Let It Be Written, So Let it Be Done.

Rex Ryan took a defense ranked 29th in pass defense and turned them into #1 in Pass D. And overall D.
