So I thought I would take a shot at evaluating the Jets shot at making the playoffs. The good news is we are definitely in the hunt for a the 6th seed in the AFC. While most of us are probably still frustrated with the loss to Denver, the truth is that as of right now, our season is far from over. More after the jump.
It looks like either the Steelers or Ravens will take the division and the other team will be the 5th seed. We're tied with the Broncos/Raiders (one will take the division), the Bengals, and the Titans. If the season ended today, we would be out of it. But, and here's the good news, there are still 4 weeks left. All of the teams we are playing have 2 games left against tough opponents which any of them can lose. We also have 2 tough games left on our schedule against the Giants and the Dolphins. While we could certainly drop a game to either the Chiefs or the Eagles, I have the confidence that we should win those. The last two games of the season are going to be the hardest as those teams both have an axe to grind with us and would love to knock us out of the playoffs.
Let's start with the Giants. We share a stadium with them and there has been an increasing amount of bad blood between us since the old Giants stadium was torn down and now they play in
MetLife JetLife stadium. They played hard against the Packers last night and may well be fighting for their lives when we meet on Christmas Eve.
The Dolphins have been playing really good ball over the last few weeks and I have a feeling that they would consider their season a success if they can knock us out of the playoffs. Their defense is playing very good ball and Matt Moore has played far better than I could ever have imagined he would.
And that leaves us, the Jets. Our Offensive line is playing much better as evidenced by the 2 straight weeks without a sack, but the run blocking has been inconsistent. Our defense has held when it counted but we are missing a lot of tackles although we have been generating some pressure on the QB. Special Teams has been disappointing but I think Westy is going to kick some butt in practice this week to fix those mistakes. The bottom line is that we are still just an average team who plays great at the end of the 4th quarter. While we won the last two games, neither team is over 500 and it took late game heroics to win them both.
Can we make the post-season, I think we can. Will we do more than that? I'm not seeing it right now. But like any Jets fan, I dare to dream.
