Braylon Edwards Released By 49ers
I disagree with a lot of people who still want Braylon Edwards, but for those who would like to resign him again in the offseason, it may have just become a lot easier.
Edwards has just announced via Twitter that he is being released, saying:
"I was released today by the 49ers due to my injury that required more time to rehab and hasn’t allowed me to re-sync with the offense...."
Let us know what you think in the comments below.

All that is true, but dude played good football when he was here.
If we could snatch him up for cheap, I’d love to have him back in the fold. He was explosive, he blocked, and he got after it.
If we’re rolling with Sanchez, the more big receivers we have the better. And I don’t think you can get more bang for your than u could with Bray Bray.

I wouldn’t be upset if we signed Braylon. Dude can ball. But I’d be just as happy if not more so if we don’t sign him. The Jets are always the franchise that get slammed for lacking class and being a team of thugs. Just once I’d like to win and do it in a classy way.

Nobody is ever going to look at our team as long as Rex Ryan is here and see ‘classy’.
Anyway, the classy tag is overrated. The supposed classiest organization in football has a twice accused rapist at qb. Better to win than be classy.

Is that how you view the Jets? Or the other fans? Every team is filled with murderers, rapists, dog fighters, drunks and drug addicts. As long as one of them can get our QB to throw the ball further then 6 yards down the field, who cares what anyone thinks? Only god can judge.

I was a big time Cowboys fan in the 90's -This is gonna be long
Let me break it down for you:
Charles Haley was traded to Dallas because he was nuts and Seifert and Young couldn’t handle his crazy ass. He was not a big money player until after he won a SuperBowl with the Cowboys.
And I believe Leon Lett was drafted by the Cowboys
You have to remember the first 2 championships Dallas won in the 90’s were under Jimmy Johnson and Jimmy made most of the decisions when it came to signing free agents.
When Jimmy first came on as head coach, he traded Herschel Walker to Minny for a bunch of draft picks and some generic players. That’s how the Cowboys became so successful in the 90’s.
Jerry Jones attempts at buying a championship started after Jimmy left and with the exception of one championship, it hasn’t worked out well for the guy.

They're not mutually exclusive.
We can be jerks and rub it in after we kick their ass, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we are jerks or thugs off the field. Brandon Jacobs is an example. He’s a thug off the field as well as being one on the field. Rex talks trash on the field but he always talks up his opponent off the field.

Edwards was a thug off the field?
Why? Because Lebron Jame’s midget friend wanted to talk smack and tell Braylon that he sucked? The guy deserved to get smacked. And Brandon Jacobs is an A-hole. Even the Giants fans don’t like him (mostly because he likes to talk and fight, and can’t back any of it up with his play)

A thug off the field is getting busted for DUI with teammates during the season and getting in multiple bar fights. There’s a common denominator there, and it’s Edwards. The guy may have deserved to be smacked but that doesn’t mean Edwards SHOULD have. He’s a professional football player and a celebrity. There’s such thing as taking the higher road.

And there are thousands of other players who don’t put themselves in those situations so it’s not even a concern. Edwards is not so incredibly good that he’s irreplaceable with one of those guys.

You're right. My bad
Now we need to cut Holmes and Burress. If Edwards getting a DWI leaving a charity event, what should we do about Holmes’s use of illegal drugs, or Burress’s desire to bring a loaded handgun to a nightclub. And the “bar altercation and fight” that you claim he was involved in in the article above… It was actually his cousins and the police never charged Edwards with anything. They didn’t even question him.
And how do you know that other players don’t put themselves in those situations? All you know is that they don’t get caught.

That’s exactly what I’m saying though. We ought to pick and choose our battles. They don’t all need to be angels but there has to be a cutoff somewhere. It’s about prioritizing. Holmes and Burress have been perfect since they’ve come here. Not once have they gotten into trouble off the field. Edwards, on the other hand, couldn’t STOP getting into trouble.
There are plenty of high character, high quality guys out there. Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, Donald Driver, etc. There’s no reason we should settle for an egg just because he was relatively good on our team. We should strive for those types of guys. They’re out there and available; the FO just needs to find them.
www.GangGreenNation.com
by bobdolethesnapplelady on Dec 27, 2011 11:26 AM EST up reply actions
Are you honestly comparing BE to Johnson, Fitzgerald and Driver?
BE comes cheap, and we all know he can play. Each of the guys you listed are big money players.
BE would cost this team about a mil a season, and would be a step up from the current 17 on the team.
And who would you say is out there an available that is tall, fast, and a former pro bowler for about a mil per year?
"Schotty... You Suck!" - Mark Sanchez
by jetsbill on Dec 27, 2011 11:29 AM EST up reply actions 1 recs
At no point did I compare the two. All I’m saying is that there are guys in the draft and FA that are good players like Edwards and of better character. I used those guys as exemplars of what we should try for. High quality, high character guys.

Come on Bob
If you’re going to go there, why don’t we cut everyone on the team. After all, there are Peyton Mannings, Adrian Petersons, Darrell Revis’s, Ed Reed’s, etc… Out there.
The problem is… they’re the exception, not the rule. And the fact is… We aren’t going to find a guy with Braylon’s talent for the money he will get. And that’s not even taking into account that he worked great with Sanchez, and already knows the system.

"Burress telling Cason to hold his dick 3 times was awesome" -J-Nasty
High quality, high character, high pricetag
If this team was one good receiver away from winning a superbowl, I could see signing one of those guys you listed above, but this team has too many problems and if we can solve one of the problems cheap, why not? Besides, him and Mark already have chemistry together. Now they can solve the safety/outside linebacker problem, through the draft and free agency.

B. Edwards...
… P. Burris can co-exist as temmates. They both got caught and paid a very high price for doing so and it has made them better(on and more importantly off the field). The fact of the matter is R.R. can coach these guys and get the most from them. I think the “dangerous duo” would only benefit one team, The Jets. When you combine them with Holmes and Kerley you have arguably the best WR corps in the NFL. I would claim him off of waivers and if not sign him if he happens to fall through.

Didn’t he go after a guy with a spork or something right before free agency this summer? That is top of the line idiot behavior, not what I would consider a “thug”.

Braylon...
… Edwards was released for poor judgement while with the Jets. I am of the opinion that he deserves another chance. He has learned from his mistake and would add an element to the passing game that is presently lacking. It is not his fault he was injured and I am certain that this could benefit this team in the future. He desires to play here and would benefit Mark Sanchez as well. The risk is well worth the reward here, claim him off waivers(and let him rehab his injury), as Crackback points out he offers plenty of “Bang for the Buck”. This action would show all, this team is preparing for 2012. This would make me very happy and Mark Sanchez even happier as he gets a WR to stretch the field next season. An instant upgrade to the entire offense, a chance to improve a weakness should never be ignored.

B.Edwards...
… adds the dimension to stretch the field, opposing defenses must respect that. Braylon and Sanchez also had chemistry, B.E. did more for M.S. than his O.C. ever did. This is an opportunity to start the process now rather than waiting. I am hoping The Jets either claim him off waivers as that shows that the F.O. is being pro-active. This is a chance this franchise must take advantage of now. It does nothing to help the “team” this season, but does a lot to improve in future seasons. ..I’m in favor of bringing him in for a physical and a workout and see what he can do. He has had injury problems this year, so who knows what kind of shape he is in. I’m not ready to wave a contract in his face for this year unless he can hit the ground running and be on the field Sunday. But based on his tweet it sounds like he is not there. If possible, I would sign him to a one year deal for 2012 adn shut him down for this year, assuming he only has the injuries he’s re-habbing, and get him in the facilities to work out in preparation for next year.

His off the field issues were/are annoying.
With that said, as a Jet this guy—in a second year particularly—played like a Jet. He was a teammate, a blocker and a REAL deep threat. He also seemed to have a really rhythm with Sanchez.
I like his production from last year WAY MORE than anything Plax has done. At least Braylon could burn people.
He was a teammate
I agree with most of what you say, but if you read between the lines there were a lot of comments that indicate he wasn’t very well liked in the locker room.
With that said, I’d love to get him back for cheap. Locker room stuff might be important, but so is what happens on the field, and he was a great fit here.

He seemed to have it going on with Sanchez, which is who I think he needed to get along with the most.
Also, I’m biased with Edwards because, for whatever reason, I really liked him and I guess I wanted him to succeed on our team.
Not very well liked by who in the locker room?
Jerricho Cotchery? Chansi Stuckey? David Clowney? Any of the other WRs that Braylon played better than?
He had chemistry with Mark Sanchez – the Playoffs, the Texans’ game, the Miami game. That is incentive enough to keep anyone on the roster, even if it is for a few extra bucks.

someone reported BE wasn’t well liked in the locker room. Not sure if it’s true or not.

One player said it was selfish and typical. Every player who was asked also seemed to prefer the team keep Holmes last year. There were some telling comments about Holmes’ work ethic and standing in the locker room.

He had chemistry with Mark Sanchez – the Playoffs, the Texans’ game, the Miami game. That is incentive enough to keep anyone on the roster, even if it is for a few extra bucks.
I agree. I said as much in my post. That doesn’t really have to do with how much his teammates liked him, though.

I think schotty didn't like him
I have a feeling that Edwards wanted to have his number called on a deep ball more often than they were. Would make sense. With him gone, and Plax’s desire to jog, there isn’t going to be anyone asking for the long ball.

Schotty...
… is like a bad dream, he just keeps getting worse. I like anything he doesn’t at this point. The sooner the Jets cut ties with O.C. B. Shottenheimer the sooner Rex Ryan and Gang Green Nation will start getting the “championships” we have waited so long for.

Not only...
… a teammate but he could be counted on to come down with the ball, pulling opposing players with him into the “End Zone”. He can and did block on plays that he did not have the ball(both on rushing/passing plays). Signing Braylon Edwards would probably make the players in the locker room happier than “GGN”. I see this as a Win-Win situation, I hope M.T. is on board with this too.

"Schotty... You Suck!" - Mark Sanchez
I watched him play every game. I know he's made some nice plays
It doesn’t change the fact that he is, quite frankly, a no-better-than-ok receiver who’s not a difference maker and a complete headache. If we can’t draft or sign a player as good as Braylon Edwards, we have deeper problems than Bray not being on the team. I think the fact that we’ve had a major dearth of explosive players in East Rutherford clouds people to what Braylon is- a decent player who is very capably replaced by a front office with an eye for receiving talent. It’s unfortunate that our FO doesn’t have that, so we have to pine for a guy like Braylon, a good but not great moron.
Since choosing not to resign this "no-better-than-ok" receiver
Our deep passing game has completely evaporated. And guys with his size, speed, and heart don’t come along too often. Remember before last years draft… We were all pumped about jonathan Baldwin. His size and speed!!!! He has 18 catches this year.

to all of the people saying that Shotty can only work with what he has cause Sanchez can’t throw deep.
Apparently you need receivers that can get open to throw deep and Brylon did that plenty.

Only picture that would be better would be one of him signing with the Jets again.

The thing is, he wasn’t going to sign cheap with the Jets ever. He felt disrespected by the way the Jets FO went after Holmes aggressively, and not him.
Has that changed? I don’t know if it has, but I always figured him for the type to hold a grudge on something like that.
Coming off an injury and needing a contract...
He might. We’ll see. I’m not expecting he comes back but I can’t say I’d be sad if he did.
Hmmm...
I wonder if his “issues” could be reevaluated at this point. Truth be told, if he’s been a good boy for the last year, I’d want him back. I liked him WAY more than Plax. WAY more.

I agree...
… but also like them both, B.E. needs to rehab his injury to be effective, and given time P.B. will become more potent. The F.O. should be able to sign them both for next season, With a new O.C. in place the offense would need about 3 players, allowing the draft to focus on the defense with the rest. This helps this team get better for 2012 now.

Not this year, but in the off-season.
I wouldn’t mind Braylon coming back… I think he could bolster the WR corps… I really believe that we have to draft well this year! If we can draft STARTERS that can contribute, that’ll be great.

Bray WITH Plax would be beastly.
Those two in a twin set would be damn hard to contend with. Using one on a rub to release the other would be so hard to defend bc they’re both excellent at using their bodies to shield defenders, and they’re both very tough defend on fade routes. So u can twin them up and do slant-fade combos all freakin day. And all Sanchez has to do is throw it in the area, precision isn’t needed.
It could be the bread and butter of the passing game. We could go to it on every 3rd and short and every red zone spot. And when teams start to float backers over there, we can hit them with the run to that side.
Even Schotty can call that game: run, play-action slant, run, run, play-action fade, run, play-action slant, run, run…

He’s on the other side with Keller. Kerley is depth and will move up when Plax moves on, but he can be sprinkled in here and there.
You don’t pass on adding high talent at a low cost because some other guys might get hurt feelings. If they don’t like it, eff ‘em. They shoulda made more plays when given the chance. And if they do start making plays, then let Braylon’s ass ride the bench for depth.
Are we really having this conversation? Would you rather Braylon or Patrick Turner? Seriously?

Why would we let go of plax he as 8 tds. Braylon will cost nothing get them both. then you have a field stretcher to run 9 routes and an endzone ballhog. oh yeah and for maybe 5 to 6 million combined! we have 9 million saved form last year. Lets make a run!! And hopefully save marks career in the process.

Not to mention all that attention would free up the Tone ,keller and kerley. also you’d have someone who knows how to play x and y in the system so tone can now move around more. people wonder why tomes numbers have been down its cuz hes been relegated to slot most of the time. Havent seen alot of fade routes outta tone.

I'm all for bringing Braylon back on an incentive laden contract,
but I still believe the Jets need to draft a WR in the first round. Whether it’s Holmes, Plax, Keller, or whoever, the Jets recievers never get any separation downfield.

The only team that he would possibly work on for the last week of this year
would be the Jets. I don’t see how he could possibly go in and learn an offense with only 4 days to learn and practice. I think it’s Jets or nothing for this year, but there’s no way he doesn’t get signed by someone next year.

If we bring in

You're right. here's the figures from the last 5 full seasons.
Rookie Production, 2006 – 2010: 201 Wide Receivers
8% chance at drafting a starter (16 players)
- 1% chance of drafting a WR#1 (3 players)
- 6% chance of drafting a WR#2/3 (13 players)
8% chance of drafting a backup (16 players)
9% chance of minimal contribution in rookie season (19 players)
75% chance of no contribution in rookie season (150 players)

It was a joke
to get rid of him. Always showed up to play. How many key plays? Big catch vs Houston, big fall down catch in Indy, TD in NE dragging 2 Pro-Bowlers into the endzone? Hmmm….really worth getting rid of.
The Jets didn't get rid of him

Hopefully the Jets make the playoffs and the 101 things shake our way. Maybe he can play in the playoff wild card game. Even if the playoffs don’t happen this move still needs to be made. This team needs play makers, and good players. He is both.

+1...
… Do whats best for the team now(prepared for a miracle), but also focus on the long term(2012 and beyond).
No harm in checking him out...
But don’t hand him the job. He’s not necessarily the same guy who got 904 yards in 2010. (Plaxico, by the way has 555 – a telling enough indictment of Tannenbaum’s mistaken belief that all players are interchangeable)
Keep all concerns in mind (character and locker room concerns as well) but don’t shut the door on him either. He’s shown he can work here.

2 things
First When have the Jets Ever been a team of Thugs and low class? There were 2 incidents last year that the Media Blew the Jets rep out of proportion. The Inez Sains issue and B.E. DUI. First the Ines Sainz thing was waaaay blown out of proportion. A gorgeous woman walks in a locker room and guys are going to act impressed? 2nd Theres at least 10 players to get a DUI a year. Im not saying it is acceptable but lets not act like he killed someone.
When Mangini was here all we focused on was High Character guys and that got us Kellen Clemens Anthony Schlegel Chansi Stuckey etc.. Jets have never been the Bengals so lets not make them out to be.
2nd Braylon was a Class here. He Never threw teammates under bus (Holmes) He said he wanted to stay in NY and Loved his teammates and would take a discount. He has great Athleticism. Fast Big. I always felt was a better fit for the team. Especially with Mark at QB. Throwing to Holmes to make a big play requires excellent timing and precision. Holmes has done Bonehead things ALL year ON Field. Hes dropped balls fumbled balls etc. Plax is not a deep threat hes barely a medium threat. Almost everytime he catches He drops to the ground immediately! ITS ANNOYING!!!! Braylon would absolutely help this team.
Edwards will sign here if the $$$ is right.2 Years $7million would get it done. The Jets WR's are
not exactly a “Class” bunch.Plaxico is a convicted felon with state prison time on his resume’.Santonio Holmes is one failed drug test for pot or anything else away from a one year league suspension. With the selfish crap he’s pulled this season I have no faith in him taming the urge.Jet fans are worried because the Jets aren’t classy enough?Jets were freakin angels under Rich Kotite. How’d that work out.
Could it be happening

Despite his “baggage”, Braylon could stretch the field. He was the “down the field” receiver other teams had to “game plan” for. This in turn opened it up for Santonio to run his quick slant routes. Mark had a better rapport with Braylon than he currently has with Burress. (who isn’t on the same page with Mark) Burress doesn’t have the speed for seperation.
