Rex's SB Promises

Rex has made a promise to go to the Super Bowl every year. I think he is misunderstood....

He's a little insight into why I am a Rex Ryan fan. Non Jet fans hate him because they see him as pompous and arrogant. His trash talking is seen as crude and he can't always back it up. And his repeated Super Bowl prediction is usually viewed as his worst utterance of the year, because they have failed to back it up.

But as I Jets fan I love it. I find it much more likeable than a media hating grumpy old man type (Coughlin). And I think that Rex stating that he can win the Super Bowl every year is comparable to the Yankees mentality. They feel that every year they do not win a championship is a failure. You can't go to playoffs and lose in the first round and consider that ok. No, every year they believe that they are contenders for the championship and anything less than a win is a loss. Its accepted by all that that is their view. The Red Sox now say the same thing.

Not all teams have this thinking. Do you think the A's think their season a failure if they don't win a championship? I bet they are happy win a playoff series win.

The Jets were not a contender before Rex got here. As other teams looked at their schedule for the year, they would see the Jets as a 'beatable' team. Nobody ever considered them a guaranteed playoff team at the outset of the season (might not be there yet, but its happening). They were type-casted with the 'same old jets' moniker and expectations were that they would fall on their face every year.

That is what Rex set out to change. He imposed his confidence on them and broke that mold. And, by the way, it worked. I won't get into the way the last two seasons ended (bc it is brought up in every other post anyway) or that we did it with a rookie QB, whose college coach admitted he wasn't ready for the NFL.

And that's why I support Ryan. Because I see what he's doing and I love where he's taken the team. Sure he gets egg on his face if they don't win a championship, but that's because we expect great things from him. Because he set his bar high. And so far he's produced enough to show us to believe its possible. He has adopted the mentality of a championship team. I'd rather him set his goals on the Super Bowl and lose, then leave us satisfied with a playoff berth.
