So now can we appreciate Jim Leonhard more ?
What happened last year, when Jim Leonhard went down ? We were blown out by the Pats, fast forward to now and its the same thing. I seen a lot of Jets fan under appreciating how important Leonhard is to this defense. Now we all see how important he is. Crackback now I'm sure you appreciate Leonhard more than you do, Lol.
Also, if you watched Mike Pettine conference with the reporters, he said our game plan would be limited. So, it didn't help none that the offense turned the ball over, which put us in the hole, and the defense in a tough situation.
Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said the call sheet would be limited this week, and the three-safety formation with Brodney Pool, Leonhard and Smith would be curtailed.
Now, we been in this situation before, so I do expect the Jets to bounce back more easier than they did last year. Last year, it took us until the playoffs to have a dominant defense again, because we were blowned out by Patriots, lost to the dolphins, came down to last play in Pittsburgh, and defense couldn't stop the bears.
I'm at least expecting some free agents move or a player to get this team, riled up again. We still control our destiny if we win out or get some key losses the following weeks.

Smith < Leonhard < 2nd string SS on most teams.
It’s not as much as how good Leonhard is, is how bad this team is overall. If you’re in a boat with 10 holes in it that are barely plugged and still taking on water, then an 11th hole sinks the boat, it’s not like you were taking care of the boat that well to begin with. The point being we weren’t winning the Pats game last year or this Eagles game with Leonhard either.
The opposing offense once again scored more points off of turnovers then our entire offensive output. Unless Leonhard is gonna start call offensive plays, I don’t think he could have made a difference in this game. Especially considering the failures on multiple levels of the defense, not just at safety. which we have been seeing all year despite Leonhard being healthy.
No
He stinks. What the hell would Jimmy gonna do? He screwed up alignments all year, he can’t cover shit, and he’s a tackle missing machine.
Know what happened after Jimmy went down last year…? We shut down Manning on his field; befuddled Brady on his field; and basically shut down Big Ben on his field.
Why did every TE have a career day against us this year? How did Jimmy let Eric keep getting matched up with them? I thought he was the QB of the defense, alignment guru. Why didn’t he ever make sure he was solo on a TE and shut him down? You know why… Bc all that nonsense that Rex feeds you is pure bullshit.
Jimmy still sucks and I’ll be glad if he never comes back. Now if we can just cut that good for absolutely nothing Eric Smith, we’ll be in much better shape.

I think this year's
defense isn’t as good because of our personnel. Lowery being gone has really set this defense back. Leonhard is at his best I believe when he has another good safety on the field with him.
We had #1 defense in the league with Leonhard in 2009, so how is Leonhard a bad safety ?
Rex Ryan & Pettine is going have to work over time to cover up the defense holes.

#1 defense in 2009 because teams hadn't figured out Rex's blitzing scheme's yet.
Nothing really to do with Leonhard as a safety, if anything just him as a blitzer.
That has a lot of truth to it,
but y’all don’t see no coincidence, that Leonhard goes down again and we lose the next week 45-19 ?

Two tough opponents, two very very terrible offensive outputs.
We were down 14-0 directly because of the offense. And the defense/STs picked up TOs to try to get us back in the game too, the offense just squandered them.
To me, Leonhard and Smith are very similar players, and it’s not like Smith is new to Leonhard’s responsibilities either, because he is well versed with them. They both apparently have the same strengths and liabilities. Leonhard just has slightly greater of those strengths then Smith and slightly less liabilities. I’d be happy to have Leonhard if they moved him to SS and got a real FS to play the position.

So how did we snuff that same offense on that same field just a few weeks later?
If Jimmy was so important, why didn’t the Pats hang another 40 on us?

Did you see how long we struggled on
defense, when Leonhard went out. We struggled I believe up to four weeks, than playoffs came around and we did much better.
Most of this blame is on Pettine for scaling back the play sheet. Rex needs take over the defense again or something.

Yeah, and then we were better without him than we ever were with him.

yeah-the D was awsome in the AFCC. Not.
We are 4-5 without JL over the last 3 years, and 28-16 with him (including playoffs). Is he great? No- but he is good. And Pool and Smith are worse.
Check the passing yards in that game and then check back. DL and LBs were missing tackles all over the first half of that game and little Jimmy wasn’t gonna do shit about that. The offense gifted them 7 in the first half on a Sanchez fumble (what else is new), and we would’ve held them under 20 and won if not for that.
Defense was good in that game.
And Pool is a much better player. Jimmy gets his ass kicked all over the place and people make excuses. He misses plays left and right, and rarely makes any plays. Pool misses plays from time to time, but he makes a ton of plays that Jimmy couldn’t sniff. Enough with the hype already.
Pool blows.
he is so “good” that Rex wouldn’t even start him. he is so wanted around the league that he had to take a paycut to stay with the Jets and even have a job because no one wanted him.
Pool is pretty good
He’s just had injury history with knees and also multiple concussions. Sometimes thats why teams shy away
Smith/Leonard have no business lining up as FS...
I still don’t know why the coaching staff is trying to fit that square peg in a round hole. I think our success last year without Leonard was due to the emergence of Lowery at Safety. The Pool/Lowery combo was incredibly effective against TE threats, I’m still scratching my head on that FO transaction.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again… we NEED upgrades at BOTH Safety positions as well as RT…. maybe even more so given our team is so Defensively focused.
If you didn't see post game interviews,
but Eric Smith said Eagles were calling out our coverages, I don’t remember teams doing this when Leonhard was on the field.

I don't remember them not doing this, it doesn't mean it did or didn't happen.
What other excuse could he answer that question with other then the truth that he is terrible in coverage?
And I don't remember Jimmy ever doing shit to stop a TE from mowing the lawn down the middle of the field.
If anything, that’s on the coaches if that’s true. This is another wildly speculative “intangible” that Jimmy Tebow is claimed to provide. At least Tebow makes plays. Timmy does it week in and week out. What the hell does Jimmy do? Jimmy is either getting his ass kicked or he’s invisible. He stinks.

I wish we would get an inkling of accountability with a statement like that.
No reason given. Are the Eagles WRs that smart? Was it Smith’s fault? Did all of our DBs drink prior to kickoff? Is Rex just making up some kind of excuse to protect Smith’s ego? Sadly, we’ll never know.
I believe its because Mike Pettine
scaled back the defense. Pool & Smith know the system, why do that ?
Rex need his hand more into this defense, start taking over or something.

Remember when our coverages used to be man all around.
Now we run zone all the time, wasting out precious corners on a small section of the field off the ball. I mean I know some sort of zone is necessary because of our safeties and LBs in coverage, but Revis and Cro were playing zone yesterday and that really again doesn’t fit out personnel. Our offensive disease is spreading to the D, slowly but steadily.
We tried running the Juan Castillo defense
by putting our press cover corners, in zone

I been noticing this.
Mike Pettine is calling the defense this year, and he’s been playing more coverage and zone, than we ever have.
Rex needs his hand back in the defense. Listening to his conference call, sounds like he will, hopefully he will.

I haven't been a fan of this years version of the Jets defense.
Whether that’s on Pettine, or Rex, or the personnel, I don’t really know, but they never send blitzes anymore. To start the game off the D forced a 3 and out, once our offense got through hanging fourteen points on ourselves, it was a wrap. Even thought the game was over at that point, did any of you stick around long enough to watch that Plaxico TD? It was pretty nasty
by Clarke W. Griswald on Dec 19, 2011 12:07 PM EST reply actions
And I don't really get the argument that it's all Pettine's fault.
What do you think, Rex turns off his headset and sticks cotton in his ears when the defense is on the field? I think Rex should be partially responsible for what’s being called. So what, Shotty makes all the calls for offense and takes full blame and responsibility, Pettine makes all the calls for the defense and takes full blame and responsibility. So what’s left? What does Rex Ryan do? Does he just hang out and pump guys up?

Everyone knows that I’m a Leonhard fan. Hugely so.. however I think it does go to show based off last year and this year how much the team relies on specific players. Regardless of their play ability. Letting Lowery go was a mistake and we all knew it when it happend. We lost games earlier in the season with Mangold going down, we lose yesterday with Jimmy out. I’m not saying those guys not playing is the reason for the loss.. we all know both sides O and D were playing poorly but if we had some legitimate depth we could survive these injuries without having to get blown out or go on a 3 game losing streak to get our act back together.
This team, this year is not as good as the past two Jets teams we’ve seen. And I’m not all convinced 2009 was even a great team. We were passable in the regular season. So far this year we have beaten most of the teams we were suposed to beat and flunked against others and the playoff teams.
I’ll be suprised if we can handle the Giants and Miami to reach the playoffs. If we can manage to pull that out of our rears this year maybe we can do something good. The last two years says that we are a different team in the playoffs. But we still have to get past the Giants and the Phins.
I think Jim Leonhard should be in the next Nike "Boom" Commercial or at least the next time he makes one of those tackles he needs to jump up with a can of Kool-Aid and shout "Oh yeah".
smith and leonard was a disaster waiting to happen
i wanted poole and lowery to be our safety pairing this year . would they have made a difference to the way the defence plays ? maybe not , but at least it would have looked like the coaches saw our problems covering TE ’s and tried something different to change it . with leonard we just stood still
if its for you it won't pass you
I think the best way to appreciate Leonhard
is to start grooming his successor.
French fries are really Belgian, sausages and bagels have the same amount of protein, two countries' names mean "turkey", and Santa Claus was invented by the Coca-Cola company. Is life weird or what?
Debe ser verde y volante - Πράσινο και να πετάει - It's gotta be green and it's gotta fly!
I didn't make it clear
By “grooming his successor” I meant that I had in mind someone who wasn’t on the current roster. Although free agency might not be a bad option either, depending on who comes out there.

Ideally, I think Rex and Mike need a FS who they can groom into their hybrid mold.
Not sure who that would be but they really can’t sign another SS and expect him to be good enough after this Leonhard, Smith, Pool debacle.
KERRY RHODES
I don’t know why the hell the Jets trade Kerry Rhodes..he was a great safety.
“He didn’t play like a Jet is not a good enough excuse to let a pro-bowl safety go..and now its biting us in the ass.
How about "he didn't play with heart"?
He was not putting enough effort into tackling and therefore either a) doing a poor job of it or b) hurting his team or both.
He got benched for a game and apparently, as the story came out later, threw a fit so the agreement was made that he’d play better for the rest of the season if he’d be gone afterward.
Sometimes even when he did make a great play, like his strip-sack of Philip Rivers, he didn’t take it to the next level: instead of going for the loose ball he started beating his chest.
