...In my opinion we should have already seen this headline. When you think back and reflect on the talent that was lost either due to Free Agency or Retirement, it is remarkable this team has not only ensured a non-losing record but is repeating the feats of 2009 and 2010(so far). The losses at OT,WR and S left huge holes in this roster, yet after week 14 the team has an 8-5 record and controls their playoff fate. This is a remarkable accomplishment, but then again so were Rex's first two years as H.C. of The Jets.
Rex Ryan's believes in E. Smith, therefore E. Smith believes in himself. He is currently leading Rex's defense in tackles. Without Rex Ryan's motivation he probably would not be on an NFL roster at all. The fact that RR has the ability to motivate an E. Smith into playing at the caliber he does is one of the reasons Rex Ryan is so special. The injury to J. Leonard has made this dynamic even more important. Last season's injury to the 5'8"/180 lb. signal caller on defense cost the team games. This year's cost remains to be seen, but I for one feel better about the situation than I did last season. We, as fans of this team are very lucky to have Rex Ryan. I say this as a long suffering, loyal fan of "Gang Green" who has seen many H.C. come and go. He has brought a whole new attitude to this franchise, and as a fan I am enjoying every minute of it. He is the kind of coach players want to play for(a non-militant winner), they buy into his system because it works. He has the ability to take a troubled player and help him become better(as a player as well as a man). We have seen him turn around several career's and he is working on others. I am not limiting this to "The Game of Football" but more importantly in their lives. I remember him stating during the filming of "Hard Knocks" that there were not enough good players here. He was very candid about that, and it was and still is true. Here he is again attempting to be the first Jet H.C. to reach the playoffs in three consecutive years. How many Rookie NFL coaches have combined with a Rookie QB have enjoyed the success he has? I am thinking he is on top of that list. How many second year Head Coaches have reached their conference championship games in back to back seasons? Gone are the days when statements like: "same old Jets" or "Just End The Season" applies. This is an exciting time to be associated with "Gang Green" and records of futility are being broken on a regular basis. This week another opportunity exists as this H.C./Q.B./N.Y. Jets Team gets the chance to do something never before done in the history of this franchise: Beat the Eagles. I am sure that is motivation enough but there is more. This is the team that swooped in and took the player I refer to now as N/A at the last minute. A player Rex highly coveted, many contracts were reworked to clear cap space and then he snubbed "Gang Green" opting instead to sign with the Eagles. The self proclaimed "Dream Team" has a flicker of hope left for the post season which should be extinguished if The Jets can reel off their fourth win in a row. A Jet win also keeps their post season aspirations in their own hands. This is December football and time to light up the afterburners.
