This is my first blog I have written for GGN. I'm a 22 year old who has grown up through the malaise of being a Mets/Jets/Knicks fan. I just wanted to say thanks to every person who has shared their input and/or feelings on this blog. I love staying updated on my Jets.
The reason why I decided to write something on here today is because there's a certain player that nobody seems to pick on like he SHOULD be picked upon: ERIC SMITH. Eric Smith is a hard hitting safety who has cost the Jets and their fans more pain than anybody on this blog seems to be aware of. Why is Eric Smith an inadequate safety? Well, let's start with his size. Smith is listed as 6'1 and I think he was wearing his cleats when he was measured- I'd give him 5'11 on a good day. His lack of height is one thing, but paired with his dismal coverage capabilities, he makes for a wonderful mess when we have to cover bigger receivers. ** One extremely discouraging factor about Eric Smith is that we will never be able to stop Gronkowski OR Hernandez for as long as Eric Smith is starting over Brodney Pool. It upsets me that Rex didn't address the safety issue during the offseason. Last year it had become apparent that we would need work on the secondary, particularly the safeties (keep in mind Lowery was starting for us at Safety(and doing a good job from what I remember)).
Wayne Hunter, you have embarrassed me, almost killed my quarterback, and made mediocre defensive ends/linebackers look like Reggie Wayne (when they bullrush you and put you on your back on national television). Why isn't Wayne Hunter successful? This guy is like 6'8 and 300 some odd pounds… how is he being manhandled by players that are 50 to 70 pounds less than him? It also hurts to see that Vladimir Ducasse can't start-- I had a feeling he was going to be an excellent guard. I don't see why we couldn't move around some lineman and find a way to get Wayne Hunter off of our line. I could see him coming in as an extra tight end WHEN WE RUN THE BALL (which shotty seems to forget oftentimes), but other than that I'd like him on the bench, or to my greater satisfaction, starting for the New England Patriots.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST- there are two problems with this offense right now. #1. We don't run the ball. Why is the ENTIRE TEAM (coaches, players, owners etc.) saying we need to get back to the basics, yet as soon as we start looking good on the ground, shotty tries to throw in a 3 step drop timing play? Why don't we run the ball 9, 12, 15, or 18 times in a row until we get a first down?!?!?! I guarantee it would take at most 2 drives with solely running the ball to get good field position. #2. Why don't we throw it up to Plaxico? Is this man not 6'5? Is his wingspan not 6'7? Why don't we do a 3 step fade to Plaxico WHENEVER the opposing team is in cover 3? I played quarterback in college, and having Plaxico is a wet dream solely because of his jump-ball capabilities.
New York Jets, please pick it up. I have loved you for so long and you hurt my feelings over and over again.
