Trading the Future Trying to Get Lucky
There has been talk recently about trading to get a new QB especially Luck. Well I see too many needs to take a chance like that when I still believe we have a good QB who was thrown into the starting roll since day one. Look what he has done for us and yes there where times I would get frustrated with the Jets and our QB. He has regressed some, but could that be that he's getting his bell rung almost every game with sacks and multiple hits every game day getting the jitters and happy feet. Look at Brady when he gets sacked and hit a lot, he gets happy feet and is not very near accurate. It's nice to Brady like that but not our QB. lol
Let's look at some big time QB's who we never heard of in college, there are many but 3 who come into mind is Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw, and Tom Brady. They were considered so so Qb's but when given the chance to succeed came through big time. For the old timers I have to add Johnny Unitas who was a 9th round draft choice when they still had those crazy multiple rounds. I think more can't miss QB's were failures than big time winners. Luck is very good and could be a big time NFL QB but who knows, we are weak in other areas that we need good picks, trades or free agents signings. The top 2 are defensive pressure and our safeties. Maybe 3 our O line, we took it for granted we had one of the best O lines in the NFL and this year we look average, with our QB getting his ass kicked almost every game and the ground and pound not really working unless the team is real weak. Even teams that aren't known to have a good pass rush seem like they do against us. WTF is going on, a good QB isn't going to change all that and trading away the future will make it worse.
What Sanchez has done for us is take us to 2 AFC championships and in those games we had a chance to win. He led a comeback against the Steelers and almost pulled it off. IMO we need a new OC to mix things up and gear towards our QB strengths. Even when we were winning I didn't like our play calling as it seem so stupid at times. Let's build our future with a new OC and some smart drafts and signings. We know Sanchez can win it's the Jets job to make it work. I really enjoy the posts about Alex Smith considered one of the all time busts, then a Coach came to town and they are 9-1. I have to admit I was one of them who said the past few years they got the Alex Smith clown again the 49'ers aren't going anywhere. If they beat the Ravens I'm ready to eat crow. lol

While I don't agree Sanchez anything special.
I do feel that it would be a mistake to not draft by needs and 1st string QB is far from one of them. Almost every team who has had sucess in recent year not located in Green Bay has done so through building a strong OLine and drafting pass rushing playmakers playmakers. Line depth and complete passrushers aren’t exactly easy to come by but drafting and grooming them seems to be the best way to do it.
I want to see what Rex can do with a well rounded LB, a la Terrell Suggs of the early and mid 2000s. Suggs was the 10th pick of the 2003 draft, depending on whose available, we could most likely trade down for a pick like that if need be. Point being we have other areas of need, the top being not in the draft but finding a new OC and QB Coach.
My take on this...
First, I don’t think the Jets will make a trade for Luck. They’re simply too far down in the draft order to do that. They’d be picking in the middle of the pack and teams that are picking #3 and #4 overall would probably offer future first rounders along with their first this year to get Luck. If the Jets were to go for another QB in the first, they’d have a better chance with Barkley, Jones, or Griffin. They could also try to get someone like Kirk Cousins in the 2nd round as well to provide competition for Sanchez.
I don’t agree with the theory that since some other QBs have come from being less of a prospect to being elite, that it can be done with most QBs. I think it’s a mistake to bank on that because you’re putting yourself in a major hole if you’re wrong on a gamble that has about 75/1 odds. If you consider all of the average QBs that have turned into elite QBs with “proper coaching” then you’re looking at a success rate for QBs that is very low. You shouldn’t bank on your QB being the next QB to come out of nowhere like Brees or Brady. If you’re unsure about the QB you have and have a desire to get better, you need to look for another QB. Hope that your current QB gets better, but you better bring in Plan B or else the franchise will be set back some years. What the Chargers did with Brees and Rivers was a terrific example on how to correctly handle the QB situation.
It’s hard to look at your own team and try to be perfectly reasonable. Try to imagine another team that has had a QB with ups and downs, such as KC or Cleveland. If you were one of those two teams, do you think they’d be better off gambling on Cassel or McCoy for the future and hope they work out? Or would they be better off drafting a QB to go along with Cassel and McCoy and have Plan B in place? If I were looking at them, I would say they’re better off getting another QB as Plan B. Maybe it doesn’t have to be in the first round, but I’d start looking at QBs in the 2nd and 3rd round. If the Jets aren’t sure about Sanchez then I think they should do the same. I wouldn’t want a QB drafted in 2013 or 2014 starting to get in the groove in 2014 or 2015 when many of the best players on the Jets would be going on the wrong age of 30. Take that QB now and if Sanchez isn’t the answer, hopefully your Plan B is hitting his stride when the rest of the team is in their prime and have many years ahead of them.

Thanks for your input and I didn’t realize I had a plan A or B. I was just stating that QB’s can come from nowhere in the right situation and succeed. It was not a blueprint to take a less QB and make him a HOF, QB. The point was a top prospect can turn into crap and an unknown can be awesome and I feel we have a good QB now and to give him that chance. There has been many a talk about replacing the Jets QB but I say give him a chance and with a new OC. Sanchez has proven he’s a winner by having a 4-2 playoff record and the 2 loses were tough ones. So there’s no special theory, I said just give Sanchez a better environment to succeed.
I also think its some of the Jets fans that aren’t sure of our QB and being a team from NY they want a quick hook. lol
But instead they should be joining the group wanting a new OC who would work on plays that works to our QB’s strength. We the Jets have more issues to resolve than our QB.
You were clear in your writing
I understood you were saying the evaluation of College QBs is not an exact science.

We need.......
To add to our O Line i think its the biggest problem right now. When sanchez has time to throw he plays so well.
Also i think we need to add a RB in round 1 to compliment Greene LT who i love and have rocked his jersey to all 6 games to i ve been to this year, is getting old. McKnight is amazing but he’s not an every down back. All these teams now have 2 back backfields. Such as Foster/Tate. If we had that i think that we wouldn’t be at 5-5 right now.
Our pass rush has been non existent these past few weeks. and you never have enough pass rushers.
Just my 2 cents
nice post
Pls someone tell me what’s so special about Luck (I’ll wait), altho I never once doubted the cal bears lol, they shud not be picking off the greatest qb to ever pick up a football …. Sanchez is my guy, yes he makes mistakes (name me a qb tht doesn’t, I’ll wait for tht too) but when ur OC plays for the other team how can you be successful? We sit at home n know exactly what play the jets are goin to run, the whole defense knows what they are going to run I’m surprise sanchez is actually still completeing these slants n arrow routs … in conclusion our qb is fine, luck is overrated/sucks, payton is old n shotty would not win a game in little league ….. oh n eric smith sucked at MSU his agent probably was owed a favor to get him drafted.

Not in favor...
In trading the future to gamble on Luck. I rather draft based on our needs (how about a pash rush for once?) and build that way. Nor am I in favor of Farving it (Peyton Manning) either. During the last season’s divisional round one of the announcers was talking the contrast between the Jets and Pats. The Pats where a young team with a veteran QB while the Jets where a veteran team with a young QB. They went on to say that the Jets were built to win now not in the future. When I heard that it was scary because building team shortsightedly hardly ever works in the way you want it to. It just reminded me parallels on what Omar Minaya (and for a lesser extend Steve Phillips) did to the Mets. Kept thinking on that “one piece” is going to get the team over the hump and it didn’t. For the past four years the team has been paying the price. I DONT want to see the Jets in the same situation.

+!
The sad thing is the front office has been patting themselves on the backs and sucking each other dicks for a job well done because we made the playoffs and are winning. Now we are starting to slowly decline our recent drafts picks in general have sucked. The trenches is where to war is won and right now we have no pass rush and weak safeties. On offense we have no pass protection, bad play calling, no ground and pound and our OC is a clown. If we don’t address some of these issues now we could be going down the wrong road to being a strong playoff team.
Though I like REX and I don’t mind his big mouth, it’s time to get on your coaching staff, front office and not the paying fans.
When I watch the Vikings
I cant help but see our team in that same exact situation down the road if something isnt done.
