Could Philip Rivers be in Play?

Should the Jets attempt a Sanchez for Rivers swap?

Star-divide

The San Diego Chargers have just dropped their 5th in a row and now sit at 4-6. They are currently in last place and 2 games back. Barring winning out the rest of the season, or even 9-7 and somehow get a playoff birth, I think Norv Turner will finally be fired. Further, I suspect that there may be some changes coming in San Diego. Would the Chargers be willing to get younger at the QB position?

Rivers is having an off year, but still is in his prime at 29. He is a borderline elite QB and a proven talent. Then we have Sanchez. He is still a marginal QB on a team built to win now. He still has a ton of upside... but still is not consistent enough.

So I pose the question, could Philip Rivers be had? If so, how much should the Jets part with to get him? Would the Chargers trade both top 2004 QBs to both NY teams?

I doubt he's on the trading block

I don’t want him regardless, always thought he was over rated.

Oh yes that's right, I'm a Jets fan.

Norv Turner will be a better bet to recruit as an OC than Rivers.

And the home of the .... JETS!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

I can’t stand Rivers! And I still back Sanchez as our franchise QB going forward. Eliminate one or two mistakes a game and he’s having his best year so far – hell, even with the mistakes his stats are better than the first two years. Against Denver, he completed 60% of his passes for 252 yards and one pick – most QBs would call that a decent day. Granted, it was a pick six, but with that and the NE one, I can’t help feeling if the receiver (Burress or Kerley) had made ANY effort to come back to/fight for the ball, they both could have been prevented.

If Mannings becomes available, maybe, but I’m not even sure I like that idea. It leaves us in a kind of Favre situation where we have to trade up to take a gamble on a new franchise QB in a couple years. Then what – we ask Peyton to stay on as his mentor? If he’s willing to do that, the Colts should just keep him around to help Luck for a couple seasons. Personally, I still don’t quite buy the modern idea that a #1 or Top 10 QB has to play right away – too many QBs are ruined that way. Of the current elite QBs, ALL of them (except Manning) got to sit and watch behind an experienced pro before being thrust into the staring lineup – Brees, Brady, Rivers, Rodgers, etc.

He is still a marginal QB on a team built to win now

Stop believing what the “experts” are saying. The Jets aren’t built to win now. We have plenty of time to win the big one and we have a ton of young guys to do it with.

I think we are built to win now, we just have an OC that's not built to win EVER.

We have great players at skill positions but ones that are aging. So if we don’t win not, we are going to need an injection of youth or we’re going to be visiting a place we all don’t want to be in the near future.

by Timmaht on Nov 21, 2011 10:22 AM EST up reply actions

The OC is the thing holding this team back?

Not the QB who couldnt hit water if he fell out of a boat? Not the Line that is awful? Not the WRs who cant get any separation? Or the D that cant make stops when the game is on the line? Yup, its all on Schotty.

Should you choose to test my resolve in this matter, you will be facing a finality beyond your comprehension, and you will not be counting days, or months, or years, but milleniums in a place with no doors.

If you have an awful line and WR's who can't get any separation

you should probably cut your QB some slack.

We don’t have an awful line, not even close. For 2 years that O-line plowed us into the playoffs. It doesn’t start sucking overnight because we lost Woody.

Are you even watching the games?

Pass protection is some of the worst I’ve ever seen. Guy has a fraction of a second to respond every down.

I can say after watching this season so far that the line DOES in fact start sucking overnight, whether or not that’s because of Woody is another debate. I don’t see how you could say we even have a good line right now, our performance speaks to the contrary.

Statistically, you’re right; we’re near the bottom of the league in running the ball and sacks allowed. But this is essentially the same line that has also topped the league in these categories 2 years ago. Who would you replace on the line if it’s so awful, outside of RT?

Defenses know they only have 15 yds of turf to account for against our offense, and it’s easy to generate pressure with a loaded front. Also makes it much harder to get yds on the ground. Remember we went through this with Pennington? Teams will keep sending the house until the QB goes up top and makes them pay for it

Fair enough on cutting the QB a bit of slack but its just as much on Sanchez as it is on anybody else

…..so basically your fine with Shotty’s piece of work are you……just askiin…..he has a lot of impact on the offensive side….and as per “WR’s who can’t get separation”…….try not scheming up plays where we run 2 and 3 guys into the same friggin vicinity…..when you draw a crowd it kinda makes it hard to bust out of the corral or successfully pass into it….just sayin….

Totally Agree

Every team has places they need to work on, as good as Green Bay is their running game isn’t the best and their defense gives up a lot of points. Indianapolis collapsed without Peyton. I thought Philadelphia was supposed to be unbeatable this year. San Diego was picked by some experts to go to the Super Bowl – I think the thing you can say about the Jets there is a lot of hype, and devoted fans who are extremely disappointed in the way things are going. The whole team has played stinky at times, not always at the same time. Special teams were horrible Thursday too. I think we need to give a 3rd year QB who has been frankly beat up this year, more time and stop looking for his replacement in a hypothetical trade. He was awful this last game, but Rex says he’s the QB lets move on and send some positive cyber space vibes to our favorite team.

A win now team doesn't start players like Wayne Hunter or Eric Smith...

Those two players have basically single handedly ruined the Jets season. They are the worst players on their respective sides of the ball and all the other teams OC or DC has to do is sit there and exploit them all game.

Line your best pass rusher…not even a good one, just whoever you think is best on your team (See Matt Roth) and line them up against Wayne Hunter to have Sanchez on his back consistently. Then if you want to make things really scary throw a blitz to Wayne Hunter’s side and watch him and Matthew Mulligan(The extra blocker that sucks at blocking but are handcuffed to put into the game to try and make up for Wayne Hunter’s sucking.) painfully try to block anything at all.

Then you have Eric Smith who is a liability every time he steps on the field. All you do is send an athletic RB or TE out for a pass and then throw it at whomever Smith is attempting to try and cover. The guy shouldn’t be starting on a win now team because he makes it far too easy for other teams to exploit us. Last week was the icing on the cake, because many people admitted smith sucked in coverage, but praised his ability against the run. Actually I’m still too disgusted with the play to talk about it but suffice to say you saw the game, Smith was not good..

by RhodesRocks on Nov 21, 2011 6:57 AM EST reply actions

Yeah we have Eric Smith on defese, who gets exploited week in and week out

Bill Belichick on the other hand, had about 4 Eric Smiths in the secondary and one would think they were the ‘85 Bears playing against us. How does stuff like this happen? When Tom Brady went down in ’08, the Pats won 11 friggin’ games. All white midgets at the skill positions? No problem! Practice squad, undrafted free agents playing at safety and corner? We got ’em right where we want ’em!

The Chargers won't give him up

They’re in a position to try and win now based on their players and the age of the players. If anything, they’d bring in a QB to compete with Rivers. They won’t just let Rivers go without having someone in place. I doubt they would think Sanchez would be the replacement they’d want for Rivers as well.

I don't think Rivers has the mentality to handle New York.

Sanchez is great because, even though he can appear defeated, he can come back the next week and try again. Rivers is extremely vulnerable to his emotions.

This applies to all these other qb posts... Not just this one

I’m just curious if someone can explain why when we are bashing Sanchez so much, we just assume we can make him a headline of a package to trade for a franchise or potential franchise qb(luck) … I feel that the same time we are bashing him and saying he isn’t good, we just assume that another team doesn’t think this

Sorry for putting this in a comment of your post it just relates to the topic and just a question I had

Come on. We’re trying to run a predictable, bland, pop-gun offense around here. Rivers is gonna want to stretch the field and throw deep once in a while. We don’t tolerate that type of turbulence in our high precision offense.

Besides, do you realize how tough you’re making it on opposing defenses when they have to account for plays that extend more than 10 yards? Please… We’re sticking with the Sanchize.

Well, I agree re the throwing motion

But you gotta admit, it would be crazy to see Rivers on this team only for the wrestling-like screaming from him on offense and Bart Scott on defense and Rex from the coaches. The NFL would shut the Jets down.
