My Wonder Bread Years were in Jackson Heights, Queens. Id sit on the stoop, listen to the old timers talk pre-war baseball and I learned, could recite World Series stories, the pitching, hitting stats of the 1911 Athletics or the '41 Dodgers, debate who was better the '27 Yankees vs '29 Athletics. If you didnt know your baseball theyd sentence you to NJ. I didnt want to go. But didnt know squat about football until one fatefull day in 1964. Friend of mine asked me who I liked better the Jets or Giants. I thought he was talking stickball teams as his neighborhood team was called the Jets. So I picked the Jets. Once Your a Jet, Your a Jet All the Way, Until Last Dying Day.
Which after 40+ years of rooting for them And this seasons team play, and last 2 losses, could be sooner than later. Exiled to SoCal for last 30 years Ive suffered thru every 'Same Ol Jets' ridicule, every losing season, every front runner hyperbole. Ive stood tall and proud, supported Todd, Vinny, Boomer, Toon, Curtis, Walker, Chrebet. Ive rolled my eyes, screamed with exasperation, frustration, yet I loved them because they Played like Jets, with heart, effort, conviction and general modicum of football savy. But I dont see these attributes consistently demonstrated with 2011 Jets. We displayed these qualities in '09 and '10. Where did it go? Why did it go??
I watch every game and every SNY TV broadcast. I read everyone of the insightful and evocative blog entries on GGN on whether the issue is Sanchez, the OC, OL, DL, safety play, etc, etc.. I dont have a definitive answer cuz I aint Albert Einstein or Weeb Ewbank. But I got a thought, maybe little levity, something different to chew on.
I propose we trade ALL the USC (University of Spoiled Children) players to San Diego for Philip Rivers. Thats Sanchez, McKnight, Patrick Turner. Rivers is big, tough, can accurately throw deep and short, has generated strong numbers. Hes demonstrated leadership, got heart, takes heat in pocket, has experience but not ancient. I believe his stats and game has suffered this year as he has limted success running game with Mathews erratic and loss of Sproyles. Hed benefit from our better OL. Hed optimally take advantage of Santa, Plax, Keller, LT and Green. Hed be the marquee proven QB that NY deserves and pass happy NFL calls for
Id throw in Shotty for Norv. Personally Id give OC job to Moore first if hed take it. But if not, maybe Shotty and Bolts management might like it and if it helps them accept the deal then Id take risk Turner as OC over Shottys relative inexperience predictability. Id also throw in McConnel. Hes from San Diego State. Thats close enuff to USC. Id trade him for couple broken bats and cup of yogurt, but all LA-LA Land, Left Coast players gotta go.
San Diego gets both young QB and RB, with strong potential, and tall backup receiver. Theyre also all local boys who will sell tickets for small market team who need ticket sales. If they move to LA, as rumored even better. Neither team shows signs of improving. Both teams could benefit from a change. Both teams need a shot cross the bow to its players and management. Dont think salary cap issues are significant. Add Smith, Cro, Yogurt???
What do y'all think? I Believe this core team can win. Im confident I cant wait nother 40+ years. I KNOW Once a Jet, Your a Jet All the Way, Till Last Dying Breath and Last Dying Day. Never Give Up. J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets!!!
