LaDainian Tomlinson Is Injured

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - OCTOBER 23: LaDainian Tomlinson #21 of the New York Jets is tackled by Eric Weddle #32 of the San Diego Chargers at MetLife Stadium on October 23, 2011 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. (Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images)

I'm sorry to have to break this news, especially in light of the last post about his milestone. As you may have seen towards the end of the game yesterday, RB LaDainian Tomlinson was injured. He came up from a play and hobbled off the field. Per Rich Cimini, via Twitter, LT has a sprained MCL and is presumably, like Brodney Pool, week-to-week. It sounds doubtful that he will play on Thursday against the Denver Broncos.

This is clearly not good news. LT still has good burst and is one of our better receiving threats. On the other hand, you can expect Joe McKnight to get more carries and be featured as the third-down back. McKnight has looked explosive (minus his punt drop yesterday) and could use the experience. With LT gone after this year, it's not the worst thing to start getting McKnight some reps. For all of you who wanted him more involved in the offense, it looks like he'll get his chance. Let's hope he doesn't fumble it away.

Very excited...

…to hear this news. LT’s departure isn’t far off and I’m really looking forward to watching McKnight in action.

Of course I wish LT nothing but good things and hope he gets better soon.

Changing of the guard

Getting Mcknight more involved these next few weeks will pay off come the final push and hopefully through the playoffs and into next season. It seemed clear last night that he can use some more big gametime experience. LT can get 100% healthy and be ready to have a limited but important role in the home stretch.

Not exactly "Excited" to hear this and here is why.

No LDT, could mean an expanded role for McKnight and Greene, what it will probably mean is more passing then running from our already unwinnable ratio of the two (39 passes to 25 runs last week). I’d love to see what McKnight can do on offense but that fact that Shotty can’t use proven pieces, makes me doubt he will try to use an unproven one.

The play he was injured on was a run on 3rd and long,

where the Pats had Edelman (A former QB, converted to WR) playing nickle CB made a tackle. Edelman continued to play and we continued to not be able to pass on them. There is so much lameness to process from this game that many may have forgotten about how lame this one was.

Good.

Tomlinson is looking more and more his age with every snap. His patented burst is nowhere near what it was and he flashes it with less and less frequency.

Joey Mac’s growth has been stunted by Tomlinson’s presence and this forced change is just what the doctor ordered. Often times the threat of explosiveness is more damaging than the explosiveness itself. Joe’s home-run threat ability will make it that much harder to defend Keller and everybody else. OLBs can’t really load up to bang Keller on the line when they know that Joe is gonna flash to the flat and can grab a 15 yd chunk before anybody blinks. That also is gonna alert the safety more to Keller and less to the WR bc he can’t get that cheat step from the jam.

Everything opens.

Agree 100%

Everybody says how LT has embraced the 3rd down back role and is fresh when he plays but he just doesn’t have that same quickness he used to, even from last year to this year. I think this may the year he goes downhill fast. There’s a reason so few people are near the records he is closing in on, the body just isn’t able to take that many hits and its starting to show in LT.

Being able to dump the ball to LT was a good thing. Its hard to imagine Mcknight or Greene being trusted to take on that role. Wasnt it Greene who fudged that pass up for Sanchez first INT.

McKnight is an excellent receiver. Why is it hard to imagine him doing damage in space? Joe can at least make a guy miss and outrun a few tacklers.

Don’t forget Mcknight was banged up as well coming in to this game, and he is still not LT. Tomlinson is excellent in blitz pick up, and as we all know is good out of the backfield. Schottenheimer is a Moron for running him in that situation, We should get another OC as fast as possible.

Tomlinson’s ability to pick up blitzes is overstated. He hasn’t been that good at all doing that this year.

Especially when we go empty backfield on 2nd downs...

But I digress, you are correct, here he has not been as good. In SD he was because of their system and his familiarity of it. Those days are long gone.

Tough break!

No one can replace LDT. Yes, McKnight needs more playing time—but no way can he consistently perform up to LDT’s overall capabilities. Greene is only fair as a receiver. This is a big hole to fill. Let’s hope Joe breaks one and Sean grounds and pounds. Bring LDT back next year! Go Jets!
