If Hernandez plays and plays wel,

the Pats offense will be a lot of Brady + 5OLineMen with two tight ends(Gronk/Hernandez), two receivers(Welker/Branch, Ocho/Price mixed in), and probably a running-back(GreenEllis or Ridley). You’re looking at as many as five legit receiving opions, which is four more than Darrelle Revis can handle, which can easily switch to more pass-protection or checkdowns or of course lots of blocks for the run game. My favorite thing about guys like Welker and Branch is the blocking they do for the run game, which is something you’ve probably seen Burress do very well.

How'd that work for your team

in the playoffs? Hernandez played in that game too-as did Woodhead who is a threat to catch passes out of the backfield and is a better pass protector than either Ridley or Green-Ellis, and he will not play Sunday. I don’t recall the Pats offense doing much in that game, do you?

Fair enough, but

this ain’t last year’s O-Line. Waters at RG has really brought a lot to the Pat offense. He was instrumental in our grounding and pounding of Oakland. Also, as much as I loved Woodhead’s technique, he’s a small guy that I’ve seen get run over by NTs before. GreenEllis and Ridley are both bigger and stronger backs.

Regardless

he actually gives up his body better than BgE (not sure about Ridley). I am not saying that the Jets will win, but I don’t see reasons for Jets fans to panic. Your defense was porous with Mayo and now the heart and soul is gone. Your secondary is banged up and even with Bodden, Chung and Dowling healthy didn’t look too great. The Jets have under Ryan have beaten the pats 3/5 times, and did so in Foxboro last Jan., so the lack of confidence engendered by being blown out there 2 times should be lessened. To be honest I don’t see how the Pats have adapted to what the Jets threw at them in the playoffs last year. the Raiders (a worse defense) copied that and when the did the Pats didn’t respond that well. The did run on the Raiders, but the Jets have a better run D so that will be harder. To be honest, if the Riders didn’t out-stupid themselves with penalties and an inexplicable int at the Pats 10 on a ball Campbell meant to toss away that game is very different. The Jets have a good shot if they can run the ball somewhat effectively, do not lose the turnover battle, and approximate (not replicate) what they did defensively in the playoffs. If they turn the ball over a bunch and/or cannot contain the Pats O then of course they will lose. Obvious but true.

If the Jets have a better run-D,

why did the Pats run-d out perform them in back-to-back games against Oakland’s run game? Take out McFadden’s best run against the pats and he averaged only about 2.5 ypc in over a dozen tries versus their run-d. Against the Jets……. I’m still trying to figure out how that happened.

Not as much as us.

Haha. 170+ yards. That’s gonna make me cry all year.

Last year Tom Brady completed 52% of his passes against the Browns and threw for 224 yards.

Mark Sanchez completed 61% and threw for 229 yards the next week against the same Browns.

So you don’t have a problem with anybody who would say Sanchez is better than Brady, right?

Because as any NFL fan knows

better is a statistical likelihood statement, not a game by game one. Over the past 2 years with largely the same personnel the Jets have been an elite run stopping team. They had a bad game against the Raiders, but none of the other games this year tell me that should be any different this year.

by Buzzy on Oct 8, 2011 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Hernandez was playing injured...

…and played only 25 snaps. Beyond that, they’ve been the offense they’ve been the past couple weeks- very limited without Hernandez. The key is if Hernandez is healthy and can play. If he can’t, it’s the same story as the playoffs. If he can play, it’s an entirely different game.

That said, Ridley is a much better running back than BJGE or Woodhead and the Jets have the “weakest” defense the Patriots will have ever faced. It’s still a good defense, but it’s not as good as the previous two seasons.

by Richard Hill on Oct 8, 2011 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions

Huh?

so Hernandez is healthy all of a sudden? And you base the Jets having the weakest D on 4 games? In most ways the Jets D should be better than last years-same personnel, a much better Wilson, no downgrade at DE. The D was great in 2 games, spotty in the first (as were most teams coming off of no real training camp) and had a bad game against the Raiders. They have had bad games like this in the past (09 against Miami, last year both times against Pittsburgh and of course against the Pats).

by Buzzy on Oct 8, 2011 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Also how do you know

Ridley is “much better” he has how many carries? He was a projected 5th round pick who had one high yardage year in college with a poor YPC. I think the book is still out on Ridley.

by Buzzy on Oct 8, 2011 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

What?

He ran behind an atrocious line of LSU and managed to gain 1147 yards and 15 TD w. a 4.6 yards per rush. Ask any LSU fans about that 2010 Offensive line. It sucked.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Oct 8, 2011 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

The only RB

who ran for a lower YPC on that LSU team was Richard Murphy who had 25 attempts. There is a reason he was projected as a 3rd to 5th round pick:

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=71531&draftyear=2011&genpos=RB

Patroit fans are funny-the guy has 18 total carries and you say things like “much better.” That is crazy. Ridley may indeed develop into a good back, but you have to remember:
a)You have no idea after 18 carries.
b)The Pats RBs run success is largely predicated on a good line and the fear of the passing attack.

Last year (because of a+b) Woodhead was the single most productive back per touch in the league. I doubt Ridley is “much better” than that overall-and remember that is not really a statement about how gopd either is.

by Buzzy on Oct 8, 2011 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not claiming that he will be a 1000 yard rusher,

but I do think he is better than Ben Jarvis. He has better vision, speed and hits the hole faster than Bennie. Bennie is a back that you can count on getting 0-3 yards per rush. He doesn’t dance at the line of scrimmage like Laurence Maroney and get a negative rush. And yes, the Pats O line is years better than the LSU line Ridley ran under.
I liked this kid in College. He impressed me w. his running style. I was one of the few Pats fans who liked the pick. Most pats fans didn’t. We took Shane in the 2nd round and most of us were perplexed at the selection of Ridley.
Watch the Raiders game vs the Pats. Bennie is the running back and he gets small yards in rushes. Ridley comes in and he is so much more explosive than Bennie. Ridley comes out, and the rushing attack ceases from being explosive and back to the 3 yards and the cloud of dust rushing attack.

Last year, Woody had a 5.6 ypr. Bennie was around 4.4. Yet I don’t remember Pats fans wanting Woody to be the top running back.
Woody is good when the defense is in nickel and dime packages.
Bennie is ok to decent when the defense is in base personal.

by Revenge of the Fallen on Oct 8, 2011 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I am not saying Ridley is no good

I am questioning the accuracy of saying Ridley+Green-Ellis is “much better” than Green-Ellis +Woodhead, especially given that you can’t judge anyone after 18 carries.

Rumor is the Doubtful are gonna be out on the Pats side

Hernad would be great to have out of the game, Fat Albert may come in but that’s questionable, hopefully both are out to really give us an edge.

And the home of the .... JETS!!!
Now lets get a G-D snack!!!

That's a ridiculous rumor.

Kyle Love played with that same ankle last week.

All of those Questionable guys were involved in back to back practices with full pads.

Didn't mean all of them

but a few of them despite being in practice I heard may be inactive for the game.
