Jets Work Out P Matt Dodge
Manish Mehta is reporting via Twitter that the Jets worked out former Giants punter Matt Dodge yesterday. Dodge is most famous for his failure to kick out of bounds last year, leading to a punt returned for a touchdown to win the game for the Eagles as time expired. Dodge was replaced this year by our very own former punter Steve Weatherford. Dodge is in his second year in the league.
I've heard that Mike Westhoff has been somewhat disappointed in P TJ Conley. Conley has been what we thought he was; a first-year starter. He's had some great punts and some terrible ones. Inconsistency seems to be his biggest flaw.
This may just be a warning shot across the bow for Conley, for him to get his act together. I would be surprised if Dodge is signed, not only because of his ominous history but also because it seems to me to take longer than 7 weeks into the season to know if your first-year will be any good. It's not like Conley has been absolutely terrible or anything.

I Hate This
It’s not like Dodge was an okay punter who Westhoff could make into an elite one. Dodge was awful in every aspect of punting:
couldn’t handle the long snap
couldn’t get the ball inside the 15, much less the 10 or 5
couldn’t kick out of bounds
couldn’t kick well under pressure
I believe in Westhoff, but I think Dodge will be too much work if they try to work him

Dodge has a huge leg
but not a lot of ability to control it…..too bad there wasn’t a practice squad for special teamers. I would love to see what we could do with a guy with his potential….but can’t use him in the middle of a division race.
Proud to root for the Jets, Mets, and Islanders!!!

yeah but if that were the case the Giants would hold on to him on thier PC.
i love this kid and was hoping he beat out Weatherford.

Giant LB'zz SUCK!! Mark Herzlich, Greg Jones,Jacquian Williams,Paysinger...Maybe not..
Why?
You don’t fuel the fire to get better with a crappy punter, you pick a good punter to challenge him. Its like being offered a one legged horse and then they offer you a dead horse as an alternative.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!
Now lets get a G-D snack!!!

It's probably nothing.
It gets Conley’s attention, sure. But it lets them get to know another player in case TJ goes down this season or if they need another body next training camp.
and the HOLMES of the... JETS!!!

Am I just me? Or am I hot in here?
Conley hasn't been great
but Dodge might be the worst punter in America.
I love Westhoff, but he blew it telling the team to get rid of Weatherford.

I hope you don't mean because of the Jackson thing
I never watched him, but if he was Bad overall that’s okay.
If people are basing it over that one play, just remember that the Giants punt coverage team had 10 other players to tackle this guy. If you need your punter to make a tackle, you did something wrong.
But again, if overall he was a terrible punter, then fine. Either way I don’t want him.
And That Is a JET FIRST DOWN!!!
No This is Patrick...

First of all, the Jackson play was inexcusible. He was told to hit it out of bounds. Instead he kicked a line drive to one of the most dangerous return men in the league. Poor coverage isn’t an excuse for a horrible kick any more than a horrible kick is an excuse for the coverage men not tackling.
But no, Machlin T is dead on above. If you watched the Giants last year, you saw a guy who struggled to perform basic aspects of the job, even catching the snap.

It absolutely was excusible
The fact that the special teams couldn’t keep anyone off of his for the 1.5 seconds he needs to actually target the punt factors in.
If the punt was blocked (which it very nearly was) those 10 other players wouldn’t have at least had the opportunity to screw up royally.
Scapegoat all they want, that wasn’t one guy’s screw up.
You can watch it on YouTube
Nobody was even close to blocking it.

Dodge was a monster in the preseason
Kicked much better than Conley. I know it’s preseason but he looked 1,000x times better than he did last year.
Rather than a wake up call to Conley
This is more like a message to Jets fans:
“You think Conley is bad, check out this guy”
Makes us appreciate what we already have

Why did we get rid of Steve Weatherford again?
To me he (Steve Weatherford) was the best in the league it was just later in the season he was getting a little shaky, kickers and punters need that extra approval from someone or they will fail (Folk) the working out someone else (to have competition trick doesn’t work for kickers it makes things worst
Weatherford said he wouldn't come back
something about not liking the team or its direction or something, he seemed very vague about it.
Apparently Westhoff also said not to bring him back.

Does anyone really get any better at this?
I can’t think of any punters or kickers that were coached into being better. Thats one thing that you got it or you don’t.
