Brilliant Second Half Sends Jets Into Bye on a High

After a trademark ugly first half, the Jets played their most complete half of the season to beat San Diego today 27-21 at the Meadowlands. Gang Green can feel good about itself heading into its week off. The team has found stability after a brutal three game stretch. This is a win against a high caliber opponent. Say what you will about San Diego's schedule. They are a 4-2 team with some of the best talent in the league.

The officials deserve a bit of the credit for this win. They gave the Jets a few calls. So did San Diego's Herm Edwards school of clock management final drive. They were smaller factors, though, than the Jets finally looking good on both sides of the ball against a quality opponent.

Go ahead and celebrate below. I will have the official recap up later than usual, but it will be up this evening.

Gives me faith

I think the Chargers have a ton of talent, and this definitely makes me feel better going into the Bills game. Schotty called a very nice game, Greene ran wild, Sanchez was efficient, Revis might have played one of the best games of his career, Cro was solid. Just an overall happy day. There were some negatives though, but that’s not for now.

Certainly a nice swing

But every game has a bunch of them. We could say that the Jets would have won big if it weren’t for that Keller strip of the Holmes TD call back.

good point.

And there were a few draw calls that just were not working.

He did a “good” job, but a “great job” means that he performed exceptionally.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 4:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I had no problem with that call. You get some cheap yards and hope you break a tackle. 3rd & 19 is a terrible spot. You can’t expect to convert that. Give some yards to your D and stay away from the turnover there.

by Crackback on Oct 23, 2011 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Field position matters. We don’t really have “break a tackle” backs. Put more people in patterns and throw a slant. Try to break a tackle that way.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

plus

you NEVER get PIs on dump offs, and this league is giving PIs away like their are hotcakes.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh. you’re not likely to get a PI when they’re playing you 10 yards off scrimmage. It was 3rd and 19 man. Cmon.

Maybe last year. We’re pretty good this year.

by Crackback on Oct 23, 2011 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

what I'm saying is that they try.

There is something about trying to convert in this passing league. The league is built for the PI.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I hear you, and don’t disagree. But in that specific spot, 3rd and 19, a dump off isn’t a bad play.

by Crackback on Oct 23, 2011 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess I am SOOOO over the RB dump off and the way

that Schotty uses it.

The other team schemes for it, and knows it is coming. We don’t have break away backs. It never goes for anything.

It just bugs me. Let’s be aggressive, especially how this league is going.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

This game was their best offensive performance of the year. It happened when it has been reported Moore worked with the team. I feel that one more bad game for Schotty. He’s fired. Rex going to promote Moore for the rest of the season. This week is a precursor to it.

they don’t. a win is a win. a good performance is a good performance. schotty has looked good at times, and if he still calls like this, he’s not getting fired this year if we get into the afcc. if he calls some good games and some bad games and we excell in the playoffs, he’s not going anywhere

Thats the problem. We need consistency in the play calling and adjusting to the personnel matchups. I would only change my mind about Schotty if we win the Super Bowl. Teams do not respect him because he is too predictable also has poor adjustment skills.

I feel that the only reason he had a good game is because Moore had to come in this week and work with the team. What does it says about Schotty if he need a mentor. It means that he his not a good OC.

by oneg82 on Oct 23, 2011 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't know

it matters who gets the credit for the O this game. schotty, or moore. if it is schotty, like i said, he’s not gone after one bad game. if it was moore, then that probably hurts schotty less. it matters who the orginization gives credit too. i hope it’s moore, but won’t it take time for the O to learn a new offense mid year? i’d rather schotty go after the end of the year if he is on and off. if he has 2-3 terrible games in a row, obviously i’d switch

One of the problems coming up is that on a bye Shcttty tends

to WAY over scheme and over think. He thinks its time to trick everyone in the book instead of just finding favorable match ups and exploiting them.

I FEAR what Schotty is going to do with the extra time, coming off a good game.

exactly…one normal called game is an amazingly called game by Schotty. I’m not going to lower my standards because having this considered ‘great’ playcalling is not going to get us into the playoffs…unless he calls it more like this the rest of the way.

by PowerBar on Oct 23, 2011 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

To be fair

it was more than a normal game. But it almost makes me mad because it means we will se 3 “typical” Schotty games in a row now.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

still no 1st qtr TD's from Offense....

…everyones is still backslappin Schotty here today on his “great” play-calling. But another slow start where it counts…….no Td in the 1st qtr. and trailing at the half. This is not the way you dictate your offense to the opposition. AS been noted here that’s 2 games in a row to less than highly ranked defenses. WE have some big games/teams to face after the break. WE can’t afford another “coma” performance like we did last year against Green Bay coming off the bye.. I just don’t think BS is the guy that is going to lead our offense to the promised land….the Super Bowl.

I think people are going way overboard on Schotty

We were fortunate that Gates was injured and not a huge factor, and also that Floyd was out in the second half.

The first TO was freak, but we could have, should have gotten off much better against another below average NFL Defense.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

The Patriots had 28 first downs

against the Chargers and we had 25-and given that we had two drives cut short by TOs (the Patriots had none) I think Schotty did an above average job, even a good job, keeping the chains moving. It is not like we have a high powered offense-we have a old second receiver, an inconsistent QB and inconsistent pass blocking, and a weak run game. This is compared to past teams WITH Shotty-so it is not like we can blame this all on Shotty. He called a good game. Do I expect that to continue-not really.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

a “good” job, I’d agree. People are tossing around the word “great”.

I don’t blame this season on Schotty. He has definitely been a detriment, but so far you could probably put as much blame on Tannenbaum with the way that he distributed resources.

This is what pisses me of about BS-he can call a game like last week’s, then pitch a near perfect game here. And it is not like the problems in the first half we his fault-just some unlucky timing with bad execution.

I think they are afraid of being up tempo often because Rex

does not want his defense tired.

But Sanchez is an emotion QB, and he needs rhythm.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Good point. Also think Sanchez over-thinks things at times; and when he lets the playclock run down and allows the defense to play around with their looks, he gets himself into trouble.

Today we were dictating things much more, it seemed.

by Crackback on Oct 23, 2011 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That is what I like

dictating tempo, making the defense adjust.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

We had 25 first downs

and would have had more if not for the 2 turnovers tht were not really Schotty’s fault. A good game for him.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really his fault agree,

but if I recall, both TOs came on passes with two defenders on the ball.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions

One was because Sanchez had his arm hit and delivered a duck

the other was a bad decision by Sanchez and followed a negated TD. I can’t blame Schotty for either.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t blame him, but neither play is a favorite for me either. Schotty loves the corner deep and the short pass. Frankly, I’m not a fan of the idea of turning Sanchez into a short throw, precision QB (the first TO). He is not that accurate, never has been.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

That play was a 2nd and 9

so I think a short pass is a fine idea. The other one was simply Sanchez locking onto a target for like 5 minutes.

Were they brilliant calls? Perhaps not, but they were perfectly sensible, and the second one would not have even happened if Mangold didn’t hold.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, so if you have a QB who locks onto receivers for like 5 minutes, why are you GENERALLY building a precision short passing offense? Sanchez just is not the kind of QB they are trying to make him.

Beginning 2 games in a row with 4 3 and outs against weak defenses is beyond “bad”, it is a downright joke, and on the OC. Unless you think that this QB is a bust, it is on the OC to bring out his strengths, and to do so in the beginning of the game when you have all your scripted plays running. The fact that this teams couldn’t get 1st quarter 1st downs against two horrible pass defenses with a QB who is supposed to be made of good stuff is not to be forgotten because we “moved the chains” today (against another bad defense).

There are many things wrong with this team, some of them personnel, but I refuse to pretend that the OC isn’t one of them.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

The locking in play was a 25 yard pass, so i don't know what you mean...

the other stuff has nothing to do with my point (because they are about Schotty-not Schotty in this game). In fact-all teams throw short passes, and in this game I will quote something from stats inc:

“was effective limiting his throws Sunday and letting his receivers do the work. Jets receivers were almost twice as likely to register first downs on throws 10 yards or fewer (39.1 first down percentage) than on throws 11 yards or more downfield (20.0 first down percentage)”

The Jets punted 3 times all game-that is all you need to know.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions

prior to this game Sanchez threw the highest percentage of

passes “short” for the entire league. I believe the stat was up over 80%

Re:

In fact-all teams throw short passes

Plus, it remains to be seen how much of this particular game’s improvement came from the mysterious and sudden appearance of Tom Moore.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

In other words, you stat is skewed. The Jets, prior to today, practically ONLY threw short (over 80% of the time). Their deep throws were not even part of what they did. They were trying to become a precision offense and refused to actually force the defense to defend more than 15 yards from scrimmage.

But we can throw the stats out and just look at this: Four 3 and outs to start two games in a row against pass defenses ranked 30th or worse.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions

It is not skewed

it was merely to illustrate that it is not a mistake if Sanchez throws a 2nd and 9 short pass to Keller. The Jets were decently successful throwing short (including all of Sanchez’ TDs)-past games are important for accessing Shotty but not for determining how well this game was called.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

They were not decently successful, they started two games in a row with 4 three and outs. That is so far off from “decently successful” it isn’t even funny.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

KV why do you always do this?

where do I say that Schotty called good games in those games, or that he is good? I am talking about this game only, and even said that he is maddening because he can call 2 games back to back of such different quality. But you keep somehow talking about something that I don’t dispute in the least.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions

And I am putting this game in the context of the season. I began simply by trying to get people to calm down from saying that Schotty called a “great game”. it wasn’t a great game, it was a “good job”, a decent job, the way we should have been playing offensively from game one.

BUT

I also have to believe that Tom Moore has had some effect on the play calling – that is my personal belief – even though Schotty pretty much did the same thing last year, a few horrible games, and then a bust out game, and then back.

I have already said that Schotty did a “good job”, but I still see him as a serious problem on this team. Not the only problem, but still a serious problem, one that can still cost us games (for instance, I worry a lot what he is going to do with over-scheming with a bye-week coming).

And again, to repeat, we need to know what influence Tom Moore had on this game before we get the full picture of what Schotty credit we give.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

OK

but as you will see above I never said he called a great game-I said he called a good game, one that even in the first half left me with hope for the second (unlike the Ravens or Patriots games where our half time deficit was smaller). I didn’t think it was a masterful, innovative plan, it was one that keep the offense moving and was mostly efficient. That is a vast improvement-and it Moore had a hand in it then great.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess part of the problem is that you came in

later to the discussion. There HAD been a tendency to say that Schotty called a great game. And frankly I was a little surprised to see you defending the whole short passing game approach which really had almost ruined the season before this.

Perhaps I over-reacted to the Keller throw, but honestly I tired of the whole Schotty 3-4 yard throw approach. Sanchez is not made for it, and I never see a lot of upside. it was a freak turn over, but it also was the kind of TO that comes from not having a super accurate QB pretending he is Joe Montana.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But further, aside from this, you seem to be painting this team as an effective short passing offense.

But you keep somehow talking about something that I don’t dispute in the least.

This game the improvements seemed to come from actually throwing the ball deeper, stopping the endless dumpoffs to the backs (a Schotty favorite), Kerley got 7 targetings for instance, and throwing the ball beyond 10 yards. There was more play action, we got a phantom PI call because we went for a deep first down to Holmes. Keller was being targeted (8 times I believe), this simply was not the same distribution or offense that they had been running. Was this Tom Moore? Was this Schotty waking up, I don’t know. But what I do know is that the short passing game of previous weeks against bad pass defenses was an embarrassment.

Maybe we agree with each other more than it seems, but these are points I’m trying to make.

by ________key on Oct 23, 2011 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

No I wrote a badly worded sentence

what I meant was:
a)It was decently successful in this game.
b)I think you have to call for a short pass there-running on second and 9 is a bad idea. Maybe a different pass could be called, but certainly not one that stretches the field greatly.

The fact that the Jets did take some shots down the field was important, even if they did not lead to yardage. On that particular play the execution was not good, a fluky result ocurred, and perhaps it was not a surprise to SD but it was not anything like the bottom of the barrel from Schotty-and if that is the worst of the game I will take it.

by Buzzy on Oct 23, 2011 7:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you guys realize

That you are both agreeing with each other?

And you’re both right, having an offense that will throw the ball anywhere on the field allows the offense to dictate where the D has to play, rather than what we saw in the past games where everything was short and the D was dictating where they would play. As an example… Baltimore wasn’t putting any of their secondary deeper than 10 yards off the ball.

What's embarassing

is that they have had a ton of talent and played in the only division in the AFC without a decade-long powerhouse like NE, INDY, PITT or BAL and yet have been to the AFC title game fewer times than the Jets in the Rivers era.

by xDieseLx on Oct 23, 2011 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

Total team game.

Defense still looks a little weak against the run but every player was helped by the guy next to him. The line helped Greene and Greene also made things happen on his own. Kerley came up big for Mark but Mark also delivered some great touch to the ball and made alot of things easier. The corners all played a solid game. That was maybe the best team performance I have seen out of the 3 of them (Rev, Cro and Wilson).
I have one huge worry.
I have no clue what happened to LDT and Greene looks like he’s gonna be sore for the next few days. I mentioned the following in my fan post. With one injury to a RB are we thin at the position?

and if either LT or Greene can’t go than we can always give Mcknight a few snaps.

haha Talk about breaking the bust label.

Jets should pick him up for another year and get him in this system, and coaching staff for the entire year. Plenty of time to bulk up and get some pass rushing moves.

I would wager money that Gholston couldn’t rush through them either.

I said it before and I'll say it again, our Jets are going to SMOKE after the bye week.

They MIGHT lose to the Pats again, but they match up very favorably against every other opponent.

No way Fitzpatrick goes pass-happy against our secondary. And no way old-man-river Fred Jackson keeps up his rushing pace.

You think divine intervention is gonna help Tebow?

Vick got his money. Bad Vick is back.

Skins? Beck knows what’s waiting for him. He saw it from the bench when he was in Miami. No Hightower either.

Giants? Bitch please.

By the time they get to Miami on New Years Day, ALL the talk will be about Andrew Luck.
