Jets Sign WR Eron Riley off Denver Practice Squad

In an interesting move, the Jets have signed WR Eron Riley off the Denver Broncos practice squad. By rule, they are required to sign him to the active roster, so he will be taking DT Martin Tevaseu's spot, who was waived yesterday. Riley had six catches in the preseason for a team-high 167 yards and two touchdowns.

I don't really know what to make of this move. Its not surprising in the sense that the Jets could use depth, but they are also expecting WR Logan Payne back in a week or two. Riley is a UDFA from 2009 out of Duke and hasn't done very much in ther NFL. He's 6'3" though, and 207 pounds, so I'm hoping the Jets use this opportunity to back away from Patrick Turner. Let us know in the comments below what you think of this puzzling move.

Update: The more I look at this kid, the more I like it. He can run a sub 4.3 40-yard dash, and can really go up and get it with a 40" vertical leap. Check out this highlight video and tell me you aren't excited about the possibilities. I know he's done nothing before the in the NFL, but as we can see with Aaron Maybin, sometimes all you need is a fresh start.

This Kid can FLY!!!

Sounds like another ok WR with more god given ability then any one person should have. Has a 40inch vertical to go along with the 6’3" frame. But maybe more impressively ran a sub 4.3 40 at his pro day 4.27 – 4.36! I like the move, if he ever gets “IT” then they sky is the limit. Also played very will on special teams as a gunner who had some big hits.

Here is a highlight film on the kid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dNr0XBIADE

Looks

like a good signing, and looking at his highlight video, he can stretch the field. We definitely need a receiver who can stretch the field, because Burress can’t.

Hoping to see him active this week.

Ugh.

Maybe it’s not the worst part of the offseason, but Buress hasn’t exactly done a whole lot to prove his detractors wrong. Here’s to hoping he lights it up after the mid season.

when was this guy drafted

the guy runs a sub 4.3 and is 6"3? there must be something wrong with him.

this guy went undrafted

this is his 4th team in 3 years. he has never played a game. there must be a reason why a 6’3 210 wr who runs a 4.27 has been cut 3 times.

He’s probably a Clowney type. Lights it up against third stringers, doesn’t have the skill to get open against the first string team. But those measurables, wow.

Someothing i found about him pre draft

He’s a solid route runner underneath and does a nice job sinking his hips and exploding into slants post routes. However, he struggles changing directions and has a tendency to get too high and lose his balance when asked to break off routes at 90 degrees. Still, no one can criticize the kid’s athletic skill set and vast improvement last year under new head coach David Cutcliffe. Riley is a smart receiver who understands coverages and does a nice job using his big frame to gain initial separation. You can’t teach his combination of size and speed, and I expect a team to take a shot on him during the back end of the draft in the hope of turning him into a big-play threat.

oooooooooooooooo shiny

seems like some of the bronco’s fans are pretty disgruntled about us snatching him. he looks promising as hell. maybe we finally have a receiver that can pan out and stretch the field… but Schotty will probably find a way to taint him.

by NewEnglandJetsFan113 on Oct 19, 2011 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

UNDFA, with Speed

Patrick Turner has had his chances , time to move on. Looking under every Rock , Tannenbaum poaches a WR off the Denver PS squad. If i look at all the chances that David Clowney had with this team, the Jets value speed at the WR position, Riley gives you speed. The guy spent a full year on the PS with the Ravens in 2009 in Cam Camerons offense. Rumor has it that Cam’s offense is similar to Schotty’s. Eron led all bronco receivers in the preseason in receptions. Riley has some expierance and an upside

I've Seen Him Play at Duke

He can play. He’s smart. A lot of receivers lose speed when trying to make a 90 degree turn. He has excellent hands, and played in a pro-style passing offense under Cutcliffe at Duke. This is an excellent pickup.

What

You make him sound like the second comming. If he is all of that, why was he on Denver’s practice squad?

by PVS53 on Oct 19, 2011 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Not certain that's fair

You never know what you may find in a guy. There have been examples of WRs who were on practice squads who became productive elsewhere.

by Melrenee on Oct 19, 2011 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

No I Didn't

That is your twist. I said he can play. He has some skills. He may not pan out, but it was a good signing and worth taking a shot on him. If he develops, the Jets won’t have to take a WR in next year’s draft and he could wind up contributing this season once he learns the offense. If he makes the field at all, he’s almost sure to contribute more than Mason did, and it wouldn’t be too hard to surpass Plax’s contributions, either.

as long as we keep MTV. Anyone hear anything about if we can resign MTV to the practice squad??

I don't really know what to think or why this move is being made now but

We do have to play Denver on a very short week, so it’ll be nice to get some intel.

Pulling a rabbit out of the hat

When you reach into a hat with your hand, everybody knows a rabbit is about to come out. Eron Riley is a receiver on a practice squad, not even the Jets pratice squad. He does not know the offensive playbook nor does he have a rapport with Sanchez.. Sanchez has never thrown a ball to him. Having the bye week next week will not change anything to get him up to speed. Even if he can fly down the field, Sanchez can not throw the ball far down the field with accuracy, more INTs. Signing Eron Riley is nothing but a smoke screen hiding a much bigger problem. He will have no positive impact with the Jets offense. He most likely will never get to play. This is a team in trouble.

like the speed and size but

what about route running? i didn’t see one good route in the video…go routes and quick screens. Not too high on him yet…I have to see more. I like the special teams plays though. This already makes him more valuable than Turner

We are in another atmosphere. You're just in the Troposhere we in the Exospere. In other words the JETS are higher than you!

Not with Shotty!!!!

When was the last time we had a homegrown Jet that was a beast at WR?? Keyshawn Santana? WayneWe have done some really dumb things with the WR position the last couple of years. We never let the young guys play, I am surprised with Kerley progress

What's wrong with this picture

He was not on a 53 man roster, he was on a practice squad. Denver needs WR’s but did not put him on the 53 man squad. There is something wrong with this picture. Drops passes maybe?

He just stinks. If anything, he’s a gunner on the punt team.

Yeah Right

You’ve probably never seen him play other than the highlights reel and yet you say he stinks. Whatever.

You’re right i havent seen him play. Bc he hasn’t… anywhere. And his supposed highlight reel from college that consists of about 3 plays on a loop is crappy.

Football is a different type of sport tho

I mean the Cowboys cut Amendola and he led the league in all purpose yards last year things happen, not saying he is going to become a beast but you can’t count him out either.
