Hey fellow Jets fans. Long time reader, first time poster. As a Jets fan who's lived in NO for over ten years and worked for the Saints for the last three - starting with the 2009 SB season - I thought I might try to provide some insight into our (Jets) own situation. Sean Payton and Drew Brees didn't just show up one sunny Sunday afternoon and win a Super Bowl...
First off, I'm getting tired of everyone constantly shredding Sanchez. The kid's shown a lot of promise and the fact that he's at his best under pressure and calling his own plays can't be overstated. Do you think Brees became a star overnight? Far from it. It wasn't until his fourth year that he became a marquee QB. Before that his QB rating hovered around 70 and his third year was arguably the worst of his carreer. In fact, very few top draft prospects at QB make an immediate impact, and I feel obligated to remind people that starting a first year QB is a relatively recent concept only forced on Sanchez and the Jets by the whole Favre fiasco. And while I'm well aware of the strength of our defense and running attack, nobody can deny Sanchez's prowess in the playoffs and crunch time - I don't know that there's a QB out there I'd rather have in the two minute drill with the game or even the season on the line than Mark, making his OWN decisions (and yes, that is a shot at Schottenheimer, who I hate as much as any Jets fan)
Next, let's talk about Sean Payton. His first year was great, leading the Saints to the first NFC championship in team history. Keep in mind though this was a city that needed something to believe in, and the emotion alone had a lot to do with their success, especially at home. The Saints proceeded to get DESTROYED by the Bears and the next two seasons the Saints stuttered to a 7-9 and 8-8 record respectively, missing the playoffs both years, so we're definitely ahead of the curve in that regard. Payton, much like Ryan is a certified genius on one side of the ball, but utterly clueless on the other. And before you go giving Gregg Williams DC of the Decade honors, the Saints D really was only good in the SB year and has been porous other than that. The Saints D is expected not to lose games, much like the Jets O the last two years, and its their high octane offense that makes them successful. It seems people in NO are the only ones who don't consider him a defensive "guru." That being said, his hiring did give the Saints a spark to get over the hump and I fully believe replacing Schotty would do the same for the Jets. I read comments the other day about Madden calling better plays in the game then Schotty does on the field and I couldn't agree more. I can't tell you how tired I am of turning on Madden to maul one of my friend's hapless teams in order to get the bad taste of another Schotty offensive suckfest out of my mouth.
My main point in this post is to let Jets fans know - STOP PANICKING! The Jets have a talented young team - more so than the Saints ever did - and assuming Ryan wises up and replaces Schotty, we have a long stretch of success in front of us. Sanchez has shown what he's capable of, and with both proven and developing weapons like LT, Holmes, Keller, Greene, etc. he will flourish under the right OC. I hate as much as any Jets fan to call this a "rebuilding" year, but a full offseason with young studs like McKnight, Wilkerson, Ellis, Wilson, and Kerley (who impressed me last week) working with the "vets" (also very young) and learning the system, I see blue skies ahead!
Again, this is my first post so let me know your opinions, but also if my tone and format are correct...
