Schotty, Cornerback Cameo's , and Falling In Love With Your Own
Several days ago John B. wrote a post saying that for despite all the attention he gets on this site, Schotty is a mediocre OC. I completely agree with the assessment, however, mediocre comes in many forms. If I were to say that every play or every game or drive gets rated 1-10, then a mediocre OC might have every play, drive and game be a 6-7 rating. That unfortunately is not how it works in reality. Schotty is one of those guys who when he is on his game is excellent. Conversely when he is off his game he bites the big one big time. The game plans against Cincy in 2009 were masterpieces. This year we scored the 11th most points in the league. Thats good right? Well, lets not forget that our offense failed to score a touchdown in 4 games this year. That's 25% of our regular season games. A ridiculous and shameful stat for the talent level we had on offense in 2010. It also means that in 12 games we really blew the doors off defenses around the league. Those #'s are perplexing and infuriating. He also called the regular season game at Pittsburgh(I'd call that a very well called game, an 8-9 maybe?), and a very good game in Chicago. So it's not that he is mediocre, it's that his swings in both directions away from the average is greater than expected, elicits greater response, and leaves us in the quandry the Jets find themselves in with him. It cannot be ignored that he has had a large part in the development of Sanchez, and while some would argue he has been babied(me for one), overall Sanchez is coming along about as well as can be expected.
If the Jets were a sitcom 70's television show I hear the announcers voice near the end of the intro music and showing the cast of regualr characters(Sanchez, Scott, Mangold, Revis) saying "And this week(or year), special guest cornerback appearance by Lito Sheppard! or Antonio Cromartie! or fill in the blank for 2011. The Cro fall into the same exact category as Scotty. His plays, drives, games vary wildly from tremendous to digusting. But I have to recognize and acknowledge what a sick, sick talent he is physically. I'd like him to stay , but someone will pay or overpay for a guy who really does need the paycheck, so I don't see him as a Jet next year.
Only 7 parts regarding Santonio and Bray? The perfect scenario in my mind would be for the collective bargaining agreement to be completed on september 1st, which would put the NFL in a bind about what to do with free agents etc.. The decision would be to have teams retain their free agents at something like 130%of their 2010 salary and in effect helping the Jets bring back this same team.I feel , myopic as it might be that we had the best talent in the league, and with Jenks and Pituhitoa all year we would have made it all the way. I can freeze this team in my mind as a team I love, but Tanny deals in reality, and if we lose one of our 3 big wide outs , so be it . Draft, trade, sign replace, and get better anyway that you can. We do root for the laundry. I love the players, but there is no one I wouldn't lose if in retrospect, it meant a better chance(retaining other key pieces or signing new ones) to get to the Superbowl.
