Kevin O'Connell To Re-Join Jets
A radio station in San Diego has announced that QB Kevin O'Connell will be brought back to the Jets for a two-year deal.
The team has not formally announced the move yet, but the source (who has remained anonymous) is in direct contact with the parties involved.
O'Connell was waived before the fourth preseason game. After agreeing to a pay cut, he was slated to make $700,000 this season, all of which being guaranteed (as we saw on Hard Knocks). Because of the torn labrum he suffered in preseason, he will likely spend the entire season on Injured Reserve.

They signed him just to put him on IR
Why would they do that? To keep another team from signing him?

Probably just to keep him around one more to develop for when Brunell is gone. Can’t hurt, can it?

I like O'Connel I just didn't understand it
No I really like this move.

What a waste...
of a roster spot. Even if he is on IR. Seriously, Ainge is exponentially better. IMO of course.
Do you like him better than...
Sanchez? lol Just askin’.
no but nothing is a sure thing....yet anyway.
Until Sanchez does what we all hope he does then we might as well have some backup plans.

Exactly what part is a waste. I mean they lose nothing, he doesn’t take a roster spot, and Ainge is still with the team too after rehab. Hopefully they will both have the opportunity to show what they have next year.
Yea its not like they are keeping someone from being on the team they are not counted as part of the roster(I think anyway)

Yeah Judge I guess you're right
Could be worse… I mean we could have Mark Brunell as our back up… Oh wait…
lol JK
I think it was just to keep teams from milking him for info, and on IR he won't be taking up anyone's spot
Get busy winning or get busy losing.
You think?
I thought they cut them early so that won’t happen and give the bubble players limited information.

Great I'd like to see him get a full shot...
chances are him and Ainge will be fighting it out for #2 next year with Clemens most likely gone, and Brunell serving his purpose for a year. That is until they bring in Kurt Warner, Bulger, Pennington, or some other washed up vet.
Yeah I don't see the Jets resigning Kellen
I think there is a team out there that might sign him with a real chance of being a starter, or atleast a competition going into training camp.

Well maybe one day
but I am not convinced that will be the peak for the rest of his footbal career. If nothing else he could be a backup, he is atleast as good as some backups in the league imo.

Probably the end of the Road for Ainge
Otherwise this makes no sense. I think the Jets are ready to let go of Ainge once he returns from Rehab. Don’t forget this is Ainge’s second drug violation.

I don’t think thats the case. I mean I think Ainge is completely dependent on his addiction and off field problems (which I know nothing of), if he’s ready and eligible next year he probably battles it out with O’Connel for the #2 or at the very least #3. Clemmens and Brunell will probably both be gone.
I suspect the Jets are being nice in not cutting/waiving him currently (also there’s probably something in the CBA about it) but a 5th rounder with 2 strikes against him in all of 3 seasons isn’t promising. Next year would be the last year of his contract anyway, so they wouldn’t lose much letting him go.
In fairness I should say I’m not a fan of Ainge at all, since the day we drafted him.

Why? Why? Why? Why? I have been asking this since the day he was brought in, and I still don’t understand it. Only answer anyone can give me is that outdated and largely false media meme about him providing us the Patriots’ “secrets.”
It’s clearly not about that. This team wants to develop him. ….why?

Come join me as I fanatically follow the goys in green!
He is a former 2nd rounder, the highest picked QB in Pats history since Bledsoe. I would guess that the Jets expect him to in the long term develop into a 2nd String QB. I guess next season they want him as #3 behind Brunnel, and after that as the #2.
Why they couldn’t just sign a career 2nd string QB is beyond me though.

I don’t know if Brunell will be here next year.

Now let's go eat a goddamn snack!
I would say it depends on Sanchez’s health and how well Brunnell and Sanchez get along.

Because the scouting report on him out of college said...
he was a very smart player, with decent NFL talent and great size, the perfect recipe for a quality #2. Most draft reports I read had him ahead of Ainge in 2008. Many Pats fans were actually screaming for him to start over Cassell when Brady first went down in 2008. Now he has certainly taken a step backwards since then, but he’s only 25. And to be fair, with Brunell coming in (because they had to worry about a mentor for Sanchez), and the Jets obviously giving Clemens extra time to see if they could get someone to bite on a trade, he really didn’t get much of a chance to show anything this year. I really think they were planning on him being the #3 this year, but when Clemens bit on the pay cut, they had to keep the more certain thing.
