Jets Claim Patrick Turner

The Jets claimed wide receiver Patrick Turner from Miami according to Jenny Vrentas.

Jets claimed WR Patrick Turner, who was released by Miami, according to person w/direct knowledge of transaction. #nyj

Without Santonio Holmes in the early going and after cutting Laveranues Coles, the Jets are thin at receiver behind Braylon Edwards and Jerricho Cotchery. Brad Smith and David Clowney have not produced in the position in the NFL.

To be honest, I have never been very high on Turner. At the very least, he might be able to provide insider information on Miami's offense ahead of the Week 3 game. I'm sure the 49 receptions, 741 yards, and 10 touchdowns he caught at USC in 2008 with Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback had something to do with this move. The two had good chemistry.

Turner isn't very fast. He does have a very big frame at 6'5" and 220 pounds. He only played in 2 games last year and had no catches. Teams usually don't just give up on third round picks after one year unless the experience was very, very bad. As Football Outsiders said in a Q and A with SB Nation's The Phinsider:

Any idea with you guys what the heck happened to Patrick Turner? Man, does that look like a mistake.

This move is a low risk one that won't really hurt, but the odds probably aren't too great that it will help.

Over on Windy City Gridiron they say the Jets have claimed

Jarron Gilbert from the Bears. There is no link but it makes sense in a way even though he has looked terrible this preseason. Can one of you please confirm?

Apparently he has been claimed by the Jets but not awarded. Someone said he is now a free agent. Not 100% sure what’s going on and none of the beat writers seem to know either.

I got to give Vinny credit he mentioned this move early this morning

I did not like it because how he looked this preseason and the same with what John mentioned above. He was the Bears top draft pick last year (3rd), for them to give up on him already… But lets see what Rex can get out of him if it happens.

Oops.

Brad Biggs:

#Jets put a priority on Cowboys DE Marcus Dixon. When they got him, they no longer wanted Gilbert. They did however put a claim on him.

T-Rich cut?

Multiple tweets, reports say the Jets cut Richardson. I just don’t get what they are doing. They complain that there are no leaders on offense then they cut one. Are they going to sign him after the first game so his contract is not guaranteed? Some other team will no doubt sign him. What the hell is going on with this team now.

by chrebetsthebet on Sep 5, 2010 6:49 PM EDT reply actions

It’s a definite head scratcher. They were definitely were feeling that Conner would be the opening day starter though.

@RichCimini I’m hearing there’s a chance Tony Richardson could re-sign after Wk 1, when his salary wouldn’t be guaranteed. Stay tuned. #Jets

WOW was not expecting this

Some times the Jets remind me of the guy who wants to be seen at the most expensive restaurant and seen ordering the most expensive dishes but on the way out the door when no one is looking they stiff the waiter on the tip.
The Jets have doubled down on all these young kids being able to replace seasoned veterans. If anyone of them have any kind of growing pains there is no saftey net to help them out. This team is suppost to be a deep playoff/super bowl caliber team, well some of these moves seem like bush league (to me anyway). IDK its just fustrating
.
I am just not happy about this T-Rich move and move then anything I am just venting.

I wonder if TRich was ok with this. Considering its supposedly his last season, he might not care.

But i agree. At first glance it seems like a scumbag move.

Am I just me?

Or wasn’t T-Rich contemplating retirement earlier this year and was urged to return by the team?

What about ll that crap on hard knocks

If anyone has earned a roster spot its him stuff…idk i just think 850k is a small price to pay of leadership where by rex’s own admission its the type of leadership that he and the coaching staff can’t provide.
I mean I love Tanny as a GM, maybe its more emotional for me but with a couple of these moves it just doesn’t seem like the payoff is worth the risk…IDK maybe its just me.

Wishful thinking

If Revis was involved in these decisions they’d be releasing CB’s not these guys.

by rxmeister on Sep 5, 2010 8:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Not saying he is signed, just that it might be close so they are freeing up cash. They wouldn’t actually release a CB till he is actually signed.

by Judgegavel on Sep 5, 2010 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

So wait...

Cut: Clowney, CWash, and TRich

Added: Dixon, Turner, and Cody Brown

Is this correct?

The Jets must have been very unhappy with what they saw this pre-season to make all these moves today. I hope they know what the hell they’re doing.

I mean the rest of CW and Clowney I like but hey if cutting them makes the team better then

I get it. I just don’t buy any part of this team is better in any area with T-Rich not on the roster

"Sorry bro, he Jason Bourned me"- Drama

by BL3ACH on Sep 5, 2010 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I do...

I agree CWash is the better every down back, but Woodhead as a special teamer and extra part is far more valuable.

by Judgegavel on Sep 5, 2010 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Clowneys days were numbered, Coaches must prefer Woodhead over CWash, not that that matters much they are the #4 RB.

TRich is really a head scratcher here, It’s either they are clearing salary for Revis or they might have also arranged something with him. I mean TRich knows he’s retiring, and knows Conners the starter this year, they might have talked with him about doing a part time semi-retirement/mentoring thing, and this way he doesn’t have to be here the whole season. I always figured they would hire him on as a coach after he retired anyway. Bringing him back week one makes that easier I would think.

by Judgegavel on Sep 5, 2010 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

In am uncapped year they don’t need to make financial moves to sign Revis. They’re just being cheap.

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees.

by rxmeister on Sep 5, 2010 8:18 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

So why bring him back after week 1? He still gets paid even if its not guaranteed.

by Crackback on Sep 5, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But for how many games, they may plan to bring him in for only half the season.

by Judgegavel on Sep 5, 2010 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Please TJ, the running game would have been much better without him last year.

by Judgegavel on Sep 5, 2010 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions

???

did you watch a game last year?

by Judgegavel on Sep 5, 2010 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

JFYI, he had the lowest percentage of yards after first contact of any starting RB last year. Which pretty much proves he owes the jets o-line (and TRich) credit for most of his statistical success.
