Ed Reed Out Week 1
Mark Sanchez will not have to worry about Ed Reed next Monday.
Ravens safety Ed Reed(notes) will miss the first six weeks of the NFL season after being placed on the reserve physically unable to perform list Saturday.
....
Tom Zbikowski(notes) replaced the injured Reed in 2009 and performed well at the position this preseason. He is expected to start against the New York Jets in the Sept. 13 opener.
This will obviously make life easier for Mark Sanchez. A young mistake prone quarterback with fragile confidence doesn't need a ballhawk like Reed on the field. It also evens things up to a degree considering some of the key players the Jets are missing.
The game might be easier, but I'm not happy to see news like this. I'd rather see the Jets beat the Ravens at full strength.

Not me
We won’t have Revis, they won’t have Reed. Sounds fair.

I'm happy they aren't at full strength.
In the regular season we need as many wins as possible to make the playoffs. If a team loses one of their best players and we’ll play them while that player is out I’m happy. I know beating a team at full strength brings more fulfillment but in the regular season I’ll take any win that I can.
I was praying we played the Steelers while Rothelisberger was out for an easier win.
We were all praying that Manning would be benched when we played the Colts.
Easier wins in the regular season are great, I’m popping champaign since Reed is out, lets get these wins now and deal with them at full strength when it matters most in the playoffs. Not that Reed being out guarantees us a win but it makes it a hell of a lot easier.

I completely agree minus one caveat – I don’t want to sneak in playing rested starters again. I’m tired of everyone hurling that out as though it invalidates everything we accomplished in the postseason.
But no one will consider this win illegitimate just because Reed’s out, especially if Revis is in absentia as well.

I agree.
We’re missing our best DB and best pass rusher, so no pity coming from this way.
Cody also won’t be playing for them which is probably more important than Reed. We’re so dependent on running the ball, and it would be tough to do with Cody AND Ngata up front.
This game's gonna be NASTY!
With or without Reed and Revis, we’ve got two aggressive, top notch defenses pitted against two run-first offenses with Rice and Greene. What a way to open the new stadium. Hard hitting, toe-to-toe old school style…let’s get it on!!!
Not so fast my friend.
Don’t be suprised to see the Ravens go 4-wide and run no-huddle for most of the game. They didn’t bust out that new look against the Giants for nothing. Nobody ever shows their hand in the pre-season. But I’m guessing that they wanted to have it ready for week 1 and wanted to have as many kinks ironed as possible before then (basically communication in a game-live situation).
They’re gonna spread us out and keep us from subbing to try to prevent Rex from dialing up the bltiz schemes the way he wants to. Also allows them to exploit match-ups: like Boldin on a rookie, Heap on a Leonard, Rice on an LB, etc. And I hate to say it, but Flacco looked pretty good running it.
4 wide
I heard on the NFL channel that the old days of the ravens defense carrying the team might be over at least until the defense gets strong again. They got hit real hard in the defense with injuries. So they think the Ravens are going to open up the passing with Flacco now more seasoned. That could be the case and I’m sure the Jets are preparing for that and if we can run either, then we have to open it up some too. Maybe some screens and quick slants, we’ll see should be an exciting game.
I still think the Ravens run to set up the pass, but I am more inclined to think that Flacco could have a good game. I assume Cro would match up with Boldin and Wilson would be matched up with Mason or Clayton. Still should be a bruiser of a game.

Its much harder for the defense to dictate the match-ups if they go no huddle. Plus i think Rice is a better runner in space than he is a banger. He can run between the tackles, but he’s much more difficult to handle in space (can run away from LBs and can run through DBs).
I really think they intend on using the no huddle heavily in week 1. It makes a lot of sense. Its a great way to neutalize Rex’s schemes. a la Peyton Manning. And why show it so much in that Giants game unless you’re trying to make sure its well oiled and ready for usage? Its definitely something you would rather keep under wraps if you can. But if its something thats new that you really need against a defense like ours, you might need to make sure everybody is comfortable in a getting the calls in a game situation.
Guess you’re right. As long as the Jets win, I don’t care what kind of offense they run. :-)

That goes both ways
They’ll think they can really attack us through the air, since we don’t have Revis. I think Rex is hoping they attempt to do that.

Revis just signed
But that won’t matter. The Ravens don’t need Reed against Sanchez. Did you see how unproductive Sanchez was in the pre season. You will have to be able to run the ball because Sanchez will have someone chasing him out of the pocket all night long. If your offense can’t control the ball the defense will be worn out by the fourth quarter.
Revis is good for game 1
Reed being out hurts the Ravens but with the addition of Josh Wilson and Zbikowski’s growth there is plenty of danger in the defensive back position this year.

Did I just hear the Ravens might be signing him.
