Rex Upset With Braylon's End Zone Act

Rex Ryan did not enjoy Braylon Edwards' celebrations in the end zone yesterday.

"I appreciate how passionate he is, but you don't want to be selfish. That's basically what that is."

I get what Rex is saying, but I frankly can't believe the officials flagged him. This is the NFL. These guys are pros. If Butler doesn't like what happened, he should have kept Braylon out of the end zone. I don't remember the last time I saw a crew actually flag somebody for taunting. I was much more upset with the dumb penalty Eric Smith took to extend a drive.

We need to utilize him more

Against smaller corners just throw it up and let him get position either a pass interference or a catch most times will happen in my eyes. On the penalty I think he along with the rest of the offense was just excited to get things going, I like the passion he and Tomlinson showed that and the energy that sanchez brings can carry you pretty far especially when times are tough. But we need to keep Edwards involved because I think he’s one of those players that run routes crisper and harder when he is, Cotchery is the opposite just the steady pro, going to be interesting when Holmes comes back.

I kind of agree

If you have a guy go over your back and take the ball away, he should be able to taunt you. Who cares its a game. As for Smith, eh, I don’t know, I get it from both sides. From Smiths point of view, he is on the team to lay the wood. As soon as he decides Brady is throwing to Welker, he has to fly to the ball and meet Welker at the same time as the ball, he doesn’t have time to decide if the ball is going to be thrown to high or not. I’m not sure if he had already committed to the hit, I haven’t had a chance to rewatch the game yet, but I do believe if Welker was 6’3 and Smith hit him in the chest they wouldn’t have flagged that play. I don’t like that defenseless receiver penalty, this is football, it’s the quarterbacks fault the receiver was defenseless. I get protecting players also, but if Smith pulled up and somehow Welker catches the ball then Smith is an asshole. It’s like pass rushers getting flagged for tackling a QB who is holding the ball because the refs ruled his forward progress has been stopped, every once in a while you have a Kiwanuka vs Vince Young play where a guy doesn’t want to commit a penalty and gives up a big play.

I saw Smith go over and say something to welker later so im guessing he apologized or something but i like the way he plays when he’s in

I was certainly not upset with the Smith penalty...

I don’t think it was that bad, plus it seems after that play Welker had no impact on the game.

Braylon penalty was just stupid, and not needed, its not like Butler is some great CB you just burned. I can see if it was Moss doing it to Revis, but Butler is an average player, who cares if you just burned him.

by Judgegavel on Sep 20, 2010 8:09 PM EDT reply actions

Because it was an awesome burn

It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.

Agree on both points Judge. Edwards has to act like he’s seen the endzone before. And when I saw Welker writhing on the ground with both hands on his head I thought Smith knocked him out of the game. And for all intents and purposes he did. Best 15 yards we ever gave up if you asked me.

I was mad about the Edwards penalty

But I didn’t think it was that bad. They should let them play, but this is the NFL, so Edwards has to know to shut his mouth and cut that crap out. I’m glad Ryan called him out on it.

As for Smith, I didn’t think that was intentional, I felt like it was because Welker went low. Whatever.

I hated the Smith penalty but didn't mind the mentality. If that makes sense.

I didn’t think the first Braylon celebration wasthat big of a deal, but the 2 pt conversion bothered the hell out of me even though he didn’t get flagged. The TD you can chalk up to emotion. But when he already got flagged, that nonsense has to stop. You get one free pass. Then you shouldn’t even come close to letting it happen again for the rest of the season. And he was way too damn close to getting flagged again.

by Crackback on Sep 20, 2010 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

I feel you.

Like when Al Harrington got T’d up again for hanging on the rim, against Golden St in overtime, AGAIN.

by dookiehead on Sep 20, 2010 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL. So glad that guys gone. Anthony Randolph FTW!!!

I know weve talked about this before

but i hope Gallo isn’t stopping them from trying to trade for Carmelo.

by dookiehead on Sep 20, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Me too.

I keep hearing that Melo wants to come to the Knicks so I hope we can somehow have both.

I was there for the one at MSG. insane that it happened twice

“Lighting rarely strikes twice.” -Walt Frazier

On February 11, 2009, with 25 seconds left and the Knicks up 1 against the Clippers, Al Harrington drove to the basket and converted a huge slam dunk to put New York up 3. Trouble is, his rim-hanging celebration was ruled a technical. A free throw cut the lead to two, then Zach Randolph tied the game, which the Knicks would eventually lose in overtime.

I agree completely.

Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.

Now the refs will be closely watching Braylon who has been known to be a jerk.

That is a reason to be pulled from a game not fumbling. What if Greene and Tomlinson fumble in the first half.I guess Shottie will be turning the running game over to the Terminator.

you’d pull a player who just scored a td for getting flagged for celebrating? glad your not the coach

by JetsFan718 on Sep 20, 2010 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd call it taunting not celebrating and the refs agreed. On the 2 point conversion the idiot did

the same thing but luckily it wasn’t called.15 yard penalties for this is just stupid but I guess monday night says it all as far as Edwards IQ

by Putnan Prince on Sep 22, 2010 9:24 PM EDT up reply actions

1 thing about SMith tho

He hits hard and always makes his tackles once he gets his arms around you your no going anywhere, also I think the hit made a lot of the Patriots receivers get alligator arms.

by Atronic on Sep 20, 2010 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

LMAO!!!

I knew Edwards was going to get flagged and the Eric Smith hit is exactly what we needed because Welker would have killed us, now he is going to think twice about going down the middle

by bllackkman on Sep 20, 2010 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

2 Different Scenarios

Smith’s play was bang bang and you know what happens when Welker gets his hands on the ball. Edwards probably thought about this dance since training camp. All he had to was turn his back to his defender or turn to the fans and he could dance all he wants. He did it right in face of the cornerback. He correctly got flagged which was selfish an unneccessary. The game might have been different if the Patriots scored on the next drive.

by JetGreen4u on Sep 20, 2010 9:53 PM EDT reply actions

Dont really see what everyone is getting all worked up for. He scored and celebrated o well i thought it was funny and a 15yard penalty on the kick off big whoop its not like it brought back the td. chill out

by JetsFan718 on Sep 20, 2010 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Seriously?

You don’t understand why someone would be flagged for dancing in someone’s face? It doesn’t matter how bad you just beat somebody, you have to be a professional. Surprised he didn’t get flagged on the 2nd taunt he had in the game.

by Branta on Sep 20, 2010 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

If Butler doesn’t like what happened, he should have kept Braylon out of the end zone.

Also, he should have walked away after the touchdown instead of standing there watching somebody celebrate.

As for Smith, maybe I have to watch it again, but I thought he was going for the ball and Welker got in his way.

lol when Smith is near you

You have to be prepared for everything he launches himself.

by Atronic on Sep 20, 2010 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

The one Edwards was flagged for I gave him more leeway. You know, heat of the momment, pent up energy from 5 bad qtrs. The one he didn’t get flagged for was worse, you got hit once and don’t learn? As for ES, hey D is about intimidation too. Remember Lott and alot of the other greats? Nasty and mean goes with Rex’s in your face style. Brady wants to say he hates the Jets in public, maybe Welker tells him to watch his mouth since he aint going over the middle! Think other WRs aren’t taking note? I saw Moss get alligator arms a couple of times.

by george JETson on Sep 21, 2010 1:09 AM EDT reply actions

I thought he was looking into the camera not at Butler

I just think there is no need for this stuff but I will give Edwards a pass. I think he was fired up more then usual about Namath’s comments.

who woulda thought namath would prove his idiocy again so soon?

That dude never shuts the hell up. One day, we are going to the superbowl, Namath is at camp, than we lose a game, he’s off the bandwagon again, like he was last year until we got in the playoffs. We get it Joe, you won a superbowl 40 years ago. Good for you. Now shut up and go home with your stupid daughter. This guy jumps on and off the bandwagon as much as anybody.

+1

Finally someone speaks up and stop giving him a pass cause he’s Joe Namath
