Shonn Greene/LT

Was just rehashing more of this game with a friend a few minutes ago. The play sequence that really struck me as stupid at the time, now confuses me even more as I discussed it with my buddy.

It was the second to last possession for the Jets in the game. I do not remember if this was the possession where LT broke the 18 yard run first or if this was the first sequence. So apologies for the lack of definite details. However, LT was being used as the feature RB and I believe had 2 runs for net of maybe 6 yards on the first 2 downs in the sequence. With the Jets facing 3rd and 4 - they sub out LT for Shonn Greene. At the time I didn't understand the substitution as this was perhaps the most important play of the game at that point - and Greene showed absolutely nothing all night. My only explanation was that Sanchez was going to look downfield and hit a WR for 10+ yards and they wanted Greene as pass protection. Yet inexplicably, the play call is for a 2 yard swing pass to the right flat to Shonn Greene who drops the pass. If he catches the pass, its an easy gain of 5 yards and a Jets 1st down. Totally changes the sequence of events at this point, as the Jets have a 1st down and have regained some momentum. Perhaps we can string together another 30 yards and be in FG range. Clock management not an issue so playcalling can be more geared towards the run or check down passing.

Regardless, why do you take out LT for Shonn Greene? LT was brought here to be the 3rd down back. He is one of the premier pass catching RBs in NFL history. I don't think Greene had 1 catch all season last year. At that point in the game - how do you make that subsitution? Can anyone shed some light on this? Would really appreciate an explanation as I think this ultimately was the turning point in the game....
