An Ugly Start

Odds are he was trying to dump the ball to a running back in this picture.

For over eight months, the Jets have been in the headlines of the papers being hyped and hyping themselves as contenders. Tonight in a hideous loss to Baltimore, they made mistakes over and over that real contenders simply do not make. There was penalty after penalty after penalty. There were drops and fumbles at key times. The tight end even lost track of the sticks on fourth down with the game on the line. None of this even mentions the quarterback play.

Instead of a vastly improved team, this looked a lot more like last year's 9-7 squad that found ways to lose close games late.

The team also suffered a key injury. Kris Jenkins left in the first quarter with a knee injury and never returned. Based on the awkward way the knee moved, and his body language as he left the field, it is tough not to fear the worst.

The official recap will be up in a bit. Play nice.

No confidence in Sanchez

They needed to let him throw more. It’s as if they’re still afraid he’s gonna lose the game but he’s the QB, gotta let him play. The running into the kicker penalty was ridiculous. Keller not running past the 1st down marker sux and we see it way too often by lots of players. And was there a problem with the headsets? seems like all night the plays were coming in late to sanchez, very frustrating. Defense was great and we were up against another great defense with a chance to win in the end. Dont get crazy after this game. Dont turn into benigno ppl.

by nationalist88 on Sep 13, 2010 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

There has to be a reason why they don't let him throw much.

They feel like he’ll cost us the game. One can make the argument that we didn’t give him enough attempts but even saying that he still looked bad. He went long what twice? One was a good pass to keller that got pulled back. He checked down way too much, idk if the coaches told him to or if it was his decision but it made him look bad. Its the end of the game and he’s throwing a 6 yard pass across the middle with no time outs? Got Keller killed with that.

And I think this conservative bullshit play calling is actually why Sanchez looks like he’s regressed since last season. Does this guy know that there is such a thing as a forward pass in modern football?

Our defense was great against an offense which is going to end up being very good.

They did adjust well but their receiving corp. was as advertised and Wilson was definitely in the weeds. Fortunately, those are the best receivers he’ll be playing all year. Cro on the other hand looked slow, he has no business being 5 yards of the line of scrimmage from now on. I’m not too worried about Big Jenks being out (Could be for the year) because Pouha is beast enough to get it done.

Sanchez needs to go back to So Cal. He’s worse than useless; a waste of two roster spots because Brunell who can’t play is only here to babysit him, and he almost got Keller killed tonight. How you guys are blaming the coordinator is beyond me. Schotty didn’t go 10 for 21 with 74 yards.

Sanchez doesn't call the plays

And if he did, I think he would have at least taken some chances. Between the play calling and our receivers inability to get any separation at all (except on a play that was called back), I don’t care who was playing quarterback…we aren’t doing anything.

by AnthonyR on Sep 13, 2010 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

A couple of things I didn't like...

I was thinking the same as a bunch of people…what the hell kind of play calling was Schottenheimer doing? It’s been reported over and over again how the Ravens secondary was depleted and ever pass was short. They should have gone for some big pass plays.

The other thought is why did they not keep Revis on Boldin? Whenever he was covered by anybody else he was taking it to us.

I will say that there were a lot of mistakes but if they clean some of that up and allow Sanchez to throw down the field then maybe we can make a nice run.

by Mac N Cheese on Sep 13, 2010 11:04 PM EDT reply actions

Sanchez

is playing with zero confidence. The play calling reflects his lack of confidence and their confidence in him.

by nationalist88 on Sep 13, 2010 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I will try and play nice

but this was as frustrating as it was predictable. They showed no discipline at all. But I can’t even blame Wilson and Cro, as horrible as they were. The Edwards penalty was a killer, but Jaworski was right, it was partially on Sanchez for not looking over there to see if he was set.

A team with anywhere near a competent offense wins this game by 14 at least. I don’t want to hear about the Balt. D. It’s not that good, especially in the secondary, and we didn’t attack it. Instead they played right into their hands by trying to run right down it. That’s called hubris, and Ryan is guilty of it on occasion. He thinks he can run on everyone, as does Schotty, and you can’t do that all night against a good run D. The offense sucked in the preseason, and it sucked tonight. It needs to go back to the drawing board.

This was a huge loss in my opinion as the sched gets tougher. Throw the ball down the effing field, that’s all I can say to Schotty. Conservative play calling runs in that family and always will.

by David G on Sep 13, 2010 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah but...

The Edwards penalty was him really going for it. I can’t blame a guy for that.

by AnthonyR on Sep 13, 2010 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

The good and the bad...

Let’s start with the good:

When the defense isn’t GIVING the Ravens first downs on brainless penalties, they were awesome. I mean, despite being tired, they held the Ravens to nothing in the second half.

Also, the special teams was fantastic. That’s a HUGE improvement over last year and the only thing that let us even score.

Now, the bad:

Anyone else miss Thomas Jones (at least he didn’t lose the ball constantly) and Alan Faneca (who cares if his pass blocking isn’t the greatest if you’re never gonna pass)?

Losing Jenkins instantly changed our D. I hope it’s not serious, but I’m guessing it is.

Cromartie: what can I say? Bonehead penalty after bonehead penalty. (Of course, the last one was just a bunch of flag happy refs.) His int was nice but leave it to… Greene to kill that.

Shonn Greene: He needs to just sleep with a football. If you’re going to be a collision runner… you can’t lose the ball like that.

Schottenheimer: If you’re going to have an innovator on defense then why have the most boring and predictable offensive coordinator in the universe?

Other thoughts:

Sanchez: Frankly, I don’t even know if I can criticize him since it didn’t seem like he was ever allowed to actually do ANYTHING and I think that’s hurt him more than anything else.

Kyle Wilson played like a rookie. Go easy on him. I mean, he’s a rookie.

144 passing yards for Flacco in 2nd half

with a bunch of long back breaking throws. That’s not exactly nothing. Imagine what the score would have been without the silly mistakes the Ravens made in the first half. The ball control offense owned the TOP clock as well, which shows the lopsidedness of the game other than on the scoreboard. However, it wasn’t over until the veyr end and we were very nervous here in Baltimore until Keller unexplicably stepped out of bounds short of the 1st down. Whew, could have easily have gone either way. Good luck and beat the Steelers for us, okay?

Tempo

One of my many issues with the Jets offensive offense was the tempo of the game. Every offensive play had Sanchez checking out of the original play and using the entire clock to get the play off giving the Ravens an opportunity to figure out what we were doing. There was no flow to our offense. No quick snaps to keep the D off balance. They didn’t throw downfield all game and then you expect Sanchez with a buck thirty on the clock and starting inside your own 20 with one timeout to all of sudden throw downfield.

I’ve never been against Schotty as I thought he did some creative things with the ball but I would have him on a two-game audition and if he can’t open up the book with the talent on the field then he should go before game four because that was one of the worst called games of all time.

and sanchez had no sense of urgency on that final drive (or any drive really). He was ready to mail it in. Even if if the clock is stopped, with under 2 mins just hike the freakin’ ball and get movin dude. THROW DOWNFIELD DAMMIT. ED REED WASN"T IN THE GAME!!!

Ravens fan.

But I was upset by a block in the back on Birk on that play. Clear penalty, right in front of the ref as the ball went by. It was probably balanced out by the other questionable calls though.

One thing for sure, you score a TD there, that’s game.

Cro Pick

I was surprised the Cro got caught by Flacco but he did come across the entire field having to run away from everyone.

On the brighter side the D played tremendous against the run limiting Rice to 43 yds on 21 carries. What other D is doing that? Rex is gotta give help to Cro and Wilson until Poole and Pace are back. If Jenkins ends up out with a sprain for a few weeks the D could really amp it up by week four with these guys back. Good thing Pouha got the reps last year.

The O can’t play any worse and by game five we get Holmes back and he is a difference maker. Gotta be 2-2 by game 5.

I am actually impressed the D held up the whole game

The offense and Schotty did them no favors with all those 3 and outs.

I agree with Schein right now

They quit on Greene very quickly tonight. Im thinking Sanchez and Schotty are a bit too enamored with LDT.

Greene didn’t leave them much of a choice.

Yeah...

TWO drops? TWO? And one that completely crushed the momentum gained by Cro’s pick? I mean… COME ON. It wasn’t just the mistakes on their own, but the mistakes were always at the worst possible moments.

I hated the LD acquisition as much as anyone, but the facts remain: LD ran for 62 with a 5.6avg, Greene ran for 18 with a 3.6 and two freakin fumbles. You cannot play a guy who gives the ball away to the other team.

LD might just have a lot more left than I gave him credit for.

Tomlinson is nice as a change of pace back at this point

but try giving it to him on a 3rd and 3 or a 3rd and 2. He will not convert. That’s where we need Greene. Giving Greene only 5 carries is just ridiculous. He’s a guy that needs touches. They didn’t have the ball much, though, so it’s a little understandable.

Greene is their horse. No reason to just give up on him. He’s had ball control issues, but to no put him back in there sends a bad message to a player you need to lean on for the entire season. He’s not joe mcknight, dont ostracize the talent that is most key to their offensive success.

How come everytime our HC loses weight, we suck? Parcells went on a diet, Vinny got hurt and we sucked. Then Mangini lost weight after a 10-6 year and we sucked. Now Rex comes along, loses a ton of weight in his second year and we’re staring suck straight in the face once again.

One of the biggest plays of the night:

3rd and 4, just under 5 minutes left, and I believe it was Slauson got absolutely run over by Ngata for the sack. The weak links always show up in key situations like that.

by David G on Sep 14, 2010 1:06 AM EDT reply actions

there’s always certain plays that decide a game. the jets saved their absolute worse in a horrendous effort for those moments. A championship team plays their best in those times. Nothing more to say.

Fire Schottenheimer, please

Anybody miss T. Jones & A. Faneca, yet?

I’ve had enough of Brian…..

Key to the season

Purchase a gaming system and Madden ’10 for Schotty. Then let an adult run the offense.

and another thing

how the hell does your team mate’s ass cause you to fumble. That must be one tough ass.
