Another one jumps off the bus
Add Dan Wetzel to the list of columnists jumping off the Jets ship:

First off, I say GREAT! Just another hater now, and as Jets fans we are all used to that. But let's look at some of his comments more closely.
Then there are the Jets, who still are without Revis, keep racking up injuries (the latest: Calvin Pace(notes)) and have watched quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) seemingly regress by the series from his decent rookie campaign?
What mounting injuries is he referring to, other than Pitoitua's knee injury? I'm pretty sure Cro is okay considering Rex was cracking jokes about it today. I would like to see Revis show up, but they can still be a solid unit without him. Whether they are the #1 or #5 defense in the league, it should still be good enough to get them where they want to go.
Then there is Sanchez, who has borne little resemblance to the confident rookie who put together some strong play down the stretch, particularly in leading the Jets to the AFC title game. The sophomore slump isn’t a new phenomenon, and in reality, it’s not like Sanchez was some wunderkind. He struggled at times last season, too.
Not sure where to even start with this one. The confident rookie? Yeah, in the playoffs maybe. Mediocre (at best) up until then. He struggled at times last season? How about ALL season until the playoffs started? The fact is the Jets were a run-first team and will continue to be, so Sanchez doesn't have to put up Brees or Manning-type numbers for this team to be successful. Hell, the Ravens won with Trent Dilfer and the Giants won with Eli Manning. Are they SB caliber? We'll see. Are they a pretender? I don't think so.

His completion percentage was 29th in the league, his yards/game and passer rating was 28th in the league, and he was tied for the 2nd most INTs in the NFL last year. To me, that is more than “inconsistent”.

Peyton Mannig
[NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING SANCHEZ WILL BECOME ANYWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS PEYTON]
Go look up Manning’s stats from his rookie year. He was garbage. In fact, Sanchez threw 8 fewer INT than Manning did. And Sanchez won 6 more games.
All I’m trying to say is that don’t base his career off of one season. He’s not inconsistent. You need to have more than a rookie season to be deemed inconsistent. Should the Jets start off 2-4 and he has below a 70.0 passer rating, then the sampling size becomes greater.
Til then, let him learn.
I’m not saying his entire career is going to go this way. If it is, the Jets are in real trouble. All I’m saying is that he was more than inconsistent last year (at least in the regular season). I hope he learns and is a great QB for years to come.

It wasn’t even close to mediocre last regular season. He reached the level of mediocrity in the post-season, but played far below that level for most of the season.
You don't think the end of the post season was better than mediocre?
Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.
No. He ha a few nice throws in the AFCC but you can’t say he played good. Unfortunately, he lowered our standards so much that, for us, not sucking = good. But in reality, he was just decent. He did nothing to pick up the offense when Greene went down.
No, he’s 100% right. When we lost Greene the game was over. Because if my memory serves me correctly, when the run game stopped, so did our scoring.

Pitoitua.... Knee?
Just to correct your article a bit – Ripoti tore his Achilles tendon, that’s not in the knee. That is that really thick tendon in the back of your ankle that connects your heel to your tibia. Pretty much crucial for things like idk… WALKING! Wish the giant the best in his recovery!
Sorry, no, and lets not forget Rex Grossman got a weaker team (than the current Jets) to the super bowl.
Some would argue
that the team got to the SB in spite of Rex.
Although I guess I’ve thought of Sanchez as better than he actually is, with things put into perspective.
Racking up injuries?
I think we have been pretty fortunate so far, Ripoti is a depth guy, and Pace doesn’t hurt that much considering the depth behind him, and he won’t miss that long. Teams lose players all the time to injury it always happens, but we have not lost anyone super vital to our chances.
