Woody Doesn't Expect Revis to Play for the Jets This Year

Owner Woody Johnson apparently is not anticipating seeing his best cornerback in green and white in 2010.

The New York Jets, responding to a new contract proposal made last Friday by Darrelle Revis' agents, painted a bleak picture Monday of the contract stalemate. A grim-faced Woody Johnson said he's not optimistic about their chances of signing the All-Pro cornerback to a new contract before the start of the regular season.

"The answer is no," the Jets' owner said tersely, adding, "My impression is no progress ... no movement whatsoever."

Expanding on that sentiment, Johnson told ESPN's Jeremy Schaap Monday that he doesn't expect Revis to play for the Jets this season.

"My gut feeling is, I would say no," Johnson said.

Fantastic.

I guess I should have been more pessimistic

about this whole situation. Honestly, I wasn’t worried at all.

Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.

Never did like Woody Johnson.

He has the power to end all of this. All he’s ever cared about is his own behind, and his money. When has he ever cared about the fans?

Can we just sell the team back to Good ol’ Leon Hess? Resurrect him! Give him the team back! I’m sure he’s rolling over in his grave with all the crap Woody’s pulled.

Not Woody, the Cap

The Jets were only $300,000 under the cap last year. Their payroll was the max it could be. It is not because Woody was putting the money in his pocket. Revis wants to take it out of the pockets of his teammates in the future. Who are you willing not to sign in order to give Revis what he wants.

First...

…everything anyone says at this point is all showboating. Who knows if he’s even being honest. Its all part of the negotiating process.

Second…the Jets will still be good this year, maybe the crazy hype machine might die down though.

Well while there is more to a team than 1 player,

i can imagine this making the defense less affective.

Man I cant believe it!

I was a fan of Revis since we drafted him got his jersey in his second year. If he really holds out on us this whole year Just trade him for two 1’s and a 3 and be done with his garbage antics and pick some good Defensive linemen and a corner with those picks.

by Lazarus187 on Aug 9, 2010 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

Well, if Revis does miss all of camp, we’ll learn pretty quickly how good the Jets D is without him (Balt, NE, @Miami).

by NTB on Aug 9, 2010 11:35 PM EDT reply actions

Calm Down Everyone

I for one, am not worried at all. The Jets have all the cards here, and Revis knows it. As the season draws near, I would go to Revis’ agents and say this.

“Your client can either sign this, or holdout all season if he wants. If he does hold out though, we won’t trade him, and our offers will only get lower. He will in effect rot away for 3 possibly 4 seasons, before he can find a new team. By the way, we want all that money that you owe us for not showing up, and he might not even get to play in 2012 even if he wants to. That’s 2 seasons of no pay, and a large sum of cash that you will owe us. Now, do you think your man wants to sign yet??

Here's Revis's counter...

Without me you aren’t going to win a Super Bowl. That’s why you own an NFL team. That’s why you built a new stadium. Throw the season away if you want.

Its true you won’t go poor without me playing, but neither will I. I might be passing up on pay, but its not like I can’t pay the rent. Other players have successfully gotten contracts as a result of holding out. I will as well.

by davver on Aug 10, 2010 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah,

I like davver’s argument better. The front office may have the chips, but without Revis saying, fine, I’ll take less than Nnamdi’s annual salary (which won’t happen, because he thinks he’s better)—won’t matter. He won’t play until then.

Gonna take a fortnight at least to get this herd down to St. Louis on Mississippi. This glen's gonna be tough to traverse, and that river's got to be 50, 60 meters wide. And God knows how many fathoms. To hell with parliamentary procedure. We've got to wrangle up some cattles!

Screw revis we are here to win a championship if he’s not on board forget it he clearly doesn’t care about winning or being on the best D in the league, we will be much worse without him but we don’t need any more distractions for the dedicated jets players.

by umohan21 on Aug 10, 2010 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

you think Woody thought Favre was going to get hurt?

Look at last season he had with the Vikings, that team had much better offensive weapons than what he had as a Jet, and he was playing well until he got hurt. I’m pretty sure we would have made the playoffs that season if he stayed healthy, and we still went 9-7, the same record we had under Rex. You think Kellen Clemens or a rookie QB would have got that team to the playoffs? Outside of drafting Flacco, Woody and Mike T simply brought the best QB option available for the team to compete.

Johnson has more than enough money to pay them all, he bloody owns Johnson & Johnson!

Revis needs to be a team player and take a hit for this year. He WILL get paid. But I think Johnson is exacerbating the situation, saying he feels optimistic about a deal and he’s willing to pay; How about you just work out a damn deal instead of blowing air out of your ass?!

by umohan21 on Aug 10, 2010 12:26 AM EDT up reply actions

We all know he is rich enough to pay them all what they want

The point is, if the cap comes back next year, and they are paying Revis too much, then we wouldn’t be able to pay mangold, harris, Braylon or Holmes, Pool Cromartie… any of them.

by GangGreenMag on Aug 10, 2010 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

That’s why I said he should just bite the bullet. Lord knows that if Mike T is as good as they say he is, he’ll pay Harris and Mangold first for the team work they’re putting in. Question is, does Revis show up and prove to us he’s the player we all know he is, or does he listen to his agents and stay home like the pansies they are?

by umohan21 on Aug 10, 2010 12:47 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think anyone is that good. It sounds like an impossible situation Tanny would be put in, if they pay too much, and we would lose a lot of good talent.

by GangGreenMag on Aug 10, 2010 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

But it’s well-known that both sides are at fault. Woody and Revis/his agents. Since it’s much harder to change owners than it is to change agents, I say fire them and hire Rosenhaus. I guarantee that if he did that, he’d hold out of training camp but he’d most likely be in uniform for the opener.

by umohan21 on Aug 10, 2010 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

The problem is

Revis is not even the highest paid corner on the team. They saved around $13 million by getting rid of Lito this offseason. They ought to offer Darelle Lito’s money for this year. Its an uncapped year, any money they throw at Darelle (who deserves it) will be made back tenfold if this team lives up to its potential.

I can’t believe how ungrateful some of you sound. Darelle is what makes the defense work.

Restructure one year at a time, do this year now, next year if there’s no lockout, worry about it then.

by Branta on Aug 10, 2010 12:51 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, you’re probably right… Let me try a different angle: if it was up to him, don’t you think he’d run as fast as he could to a small market team who was willing to give him $500,000 more than the Jets?

by nationalist88 on Aug 10, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Would you ever consider trading him?

I am not a Jet’s fan, sorry. I was posting on our site and realized that your depth at Corner now with Kyle Wilson is really good, so much so that it would not surprise me if Woody Johnson would get fedup of all this BS and dangle him to the Ravens to see what he could get in exchange. They are probably quite desperate right about now.

So my question: Is this actually something that could happen?

by keysh67 on Aug 10, 2010 8:36 AM EDT reply actions

Ngata

I think Ngata might be a chance given that Baltimore is extremely thin at CB and could use a #1 CB, even if all their CBs were healthy. I’m not so sure if Baltimore would accept a one-for-one swap, but it’d be close to an even deal.

by Finhead83 on Aug 10, 2010 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Jets would not likely trade him to an AFC team, and definitely not to a team we’ll compete with for a playoff spot. Also the Ravens’ defensive system is one of the few Revis could excel in, and that’s not helping us either.

by nationalist88 on Aug 10, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a Baltimore fan. I’m a Bills fan.
I just look at the situation with your owner and your new rookie and Cromartie and figure that you guys are sitting in the drivers seat. Baltimore should be a bit desperate at this point. As a Bills fan, I’d hate to see you guys with extra picks for the next few drafts.

by keysh67 on Aug 10, 2010 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

That deal

That is asking a lot for any player in the NFL and the Jets could not get that much for him. Now if the Jets could somehow get someone like Ngata and a second rounder or a first rounder for Revis, I think it’d be a good deal. It would be even better for them since they could target a top player like Prince Amukamara or Ras-l Downling (both CBs), which would be a need if they can’t get Cromartie. They could also target WR AJ Green or S DeAndre McDaniel (S). They could also try another OLB conversion with Jeremy Beal or Robert Quinn, but just watch out for Gholston v2.0. Sorry if I’m not exactly high on Brodney Pool or the chances both Holmes and Edwards are Jets next season.

Revis is doing exactly what his uncle did over a decade ago

sean gilbert sat out an entire yr, called the teams bluff and got traded and paid a huge contract at the time, if gilbert is mentoring revis and constantly in his ear, it’s definately not good for jet fans. his uncle went thru the same tthing, and it worked! he’s got an example right in his own family! if u take namdi’s rediculous contract out, how much are pro bowl corners making at the high end? 5-7 million per? that’s what i would offer, i dont blame ur owner, wether its smoke and mirrors or not, im not paying a corner “albert haynesworth money”.

Yeah it worked, but it worked for Gilbert alone. He got the huge deal and was injury plagued, totaling only 8 sack in the three years after his deal. $46.5 Million for only 8 sacks? Can you say EPIC FAIL for Carolina? Even Dom Capers said what a mistake it was to devote such a large contract to one player. Check Wiki if you don’t believe me…

by umohan21 on Aug 10, 2010 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions

This team is built to win now, and without Revis we are just a little worse off than last year, which means some high powered passing offense will knock us right out of the playoffs by throwing to their Pierre Garcon/Austin Collie. Rex Ryan’s defenses have always struggled against above average passing teams. We can’t hang with teams like Indy or Green Bay without Revis. Hell, even the Texans may have a chance against us without Revis blanketing Andre Johnson.

by SioneBAAOOOHA on Aug 10, 2010 10:46 AM EDT reply actions

Very rarely in the NFL do you get full value back (exception Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis). They can probably get back a 1st and a 2nd , in that case don’t trade him.

Screw it.

I hope Cromartie is back to being great this year and I hope Wilson absolutely lights it up. I don’t care how talented a player is, this kind of attitude is cancerous to a team. As soon as I found out he held to get his current contract I ceased to care about anything else. Revis is simply “one of those guys.”

I hope they hold him to every drop of his existing contract. I realize a lot of people out there say, “Well, he could have a career ending injury.” He got up front money and, frankly, I don’t worry about people making 7 figures. I’m sure he’d survive and still live better than I do if he was smart.

And can Al Davis please die so other teams don’t have to continue to suffer under his insane numbers.

by Crackback on Aug 10, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Triple thats only 3 million...

but realistically I have to think the jets have to be offering between 10-14 million. Considering the prospects for this season if I play (winning the super bowl, endorsement deals, etc) if I play, vs. what would happen if I don’t I certainly would take less money, cause in the long run it would serve me much better.

by Judgegavel on Aug 10, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Not if he snaps his leg in game 6. You control what you can control. The Superbowl is not pre-ordained. Neither are the playoffs. What if Sanchez sucks? We can hope all we want, but we’ve seen nothing thus far to suggest that Sanchez will be a big time QB. And if he’s not, how good is this team? And how good is it without Revis?

He’s worth the money. Pay the man.

by Crackback on Aug 10, 2010 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure nothings pre ordained...

but he’s certainly going to have one of his better chances now.

He’s not worth the money, no player short of a QB is (and even then he’s probably over paid as well), don’t pay the man or you risk destroying any future this team has.

by Judgegavel on Aug 10, 2010 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

What if they sign him everything breaks right...

but they come up just short again. But next year because of the cap, and what your paying Revis, you can’t resign Mangold, Harris, Edwards &/or Holmes, and Cromartie.

Sanchez pretty much sucked last year (disagree we’ve seen nothing though) and we were a 1/2 away from the superbowl, and I happen to believe this team addressed every need it had this off season, and is much improved from last year.
