What up GGN? If you have any questions fire away and myself or one of our regs will answer any of your Redskins related questions. We're dead tired of the Haynesworth saga, so expect a witty or seething response if you throw one out. No one really knows what's going on and Shanahan has decided to keep everything private since the drama from Saturday night's post game. He will play on Friday if he manages not to piss anyone off by then.

Hey Kevin, thanks for stopping by. What’s the deal with Santana Moss? I know there were stories of his connection to this doctor caught with illegal stuff. What’s his current status?

Arr Santana, good memories of the little burner. Still holds 2 of our top 3 punt return records over the last decade. McKnight’s 67 yarder stuck in the middle of those two.

Favre went to go see the same doctor about his ankle.
Apparently he’s a big name in the NFL world. Doesn’t look like anything will happen to Santana surrounding HGH allegations though (pending new evidence).
Well there goes my first question lol
You have just signed Tyrone Carter an ex Jet, and I have fond memories of his one year with us, what kind of role do you envision for him this year with the Skins?
Just how high is the ceiling for Brian Orakpo?
Who of your current rookies has stood out so far this off-season?

Tyrone Carter – With FS Kareem Moore out, the 2 backup SS (Reed Doughty and Chris Horton) are competing for that #1 FS spot and Tyrone will now backup SS Laron Landry.
Orakpo – The ceiling is the heavens where Tim Tebow and Jesus are spooning. He’s a beast and gets into backfield w/ ease, but he’s had trouble wrapping up the Qb or RB (over-shooting)…he’ll get there…but he’s the most popular player in DC for the die-hard fans.
Rookies – 4th overall pick Trent Williams has shined. He got burned a few times but Suggs, but has shown he has everything to be our anchor LT for the next 10 years.

Orakpo is everything Jets fans want Gholston to be.
A physical freak with a strong bull rush and swim move. Listening to him gives the impression that he has the blue collar, workman mentality that’ll keep him in the league for a long time. The kid benches 515 lbs and squats 600 lbs. He ran a 4.6 and had a 40" vertical at 6’3, 260 lbs. He’s distinguishable by the compression sleeve he cuts off and wears on his head and the deepest voice I’ve ever heard.
Anthony Armstrong isn’t quite considered a rookie, as he’s coming off the practice squad from last year, but he’s the new name to keep an eye on. He’s been making circus catches every chance he gets and has the speed to get behind the secondary. Only 5"11 though.
How far do you think you can go with Mcnabb?
by Bob_The_Friendly_Baker on Aug 24, 2010 10:45 PM EDT reply actions
Can you clarify how many games he'll play?
If he manages to play all 16 games, I think we’re an 8-8 team, but it’s hard to over-haul an entire roster and staff and expect them to come out with regular consistency. The Ravens exposed we’re a work in progress…tho 1st team, however, played the Ravens close before the backups came in and pooped the bed.
Redskins have major question marks at WR after Moss…Anthony Armstrong and Devin Thomas look to be fighting for the #2 spot…

Redskins lack serious depth at OL and WR
which makes me think we’ll go 7-9 (injuries happen)…if McNabb goes down early, season is lost. Rex cannot compete in the NFC East.

If McNabb is healthy.
We’re a superbowl contender. I’m a die-hard fan and something, so I have similar thoughts every year (but especially this year). Something about the combined leadership and work ethis of Shanahan and McNabb makes for a strong foundation on a contending team.
Depends
I think McNabb is capable of carrying us to the Super Bowl (not this year though) but he (just like any QB) cannot do it alone. I believe our starting O-line can be serviceable/good (but certainly not great) if they continue to gel. Our RB’s are average at best, our WR corps is a weakness, TE is definitely a strength of ours with Chris Cooley and a young, emerging TE by the name of Fred Davis. However, McNabb’s inability to stay healthy is definitely a concern of mine.
But ultimately, I think McNabb can take us further than Jason Campbell would have been able to take us if that’s also what you’re wondering. No offense to Campbell of course.
I'm a Jets fan in DC...so I kinda know a lot about the Skins :)
But I haven’t really been following training camp as much as I’d like to.
So my question is: how’s Trent Williams holding up? Kid’s got a lot of potential – had some off-the-field problems at OU but I don’t think that’ll be much of a problem with Shanahan at head coach here in DC. You think he’s a good replacement for Chris Samuels?
And have any other recent draft picks stood out lately? I’ve heard the staff likes Perry Riley from LSU.
The sky is the same color wherever you go.
Trent Williams is a beast
No doubt he can be as good as Samuels. Trent is so fast that even when a guy does get him around, he can still recover. Coaches here (who have been in the league a long time) say he has the quickest recovery they’ve ever seen. He still loses some battles like all rooks do, but he is a self-imposed film room junky, which is a great sign.
Perry Riley has done well…he’s backing up Rocky McIntosh at RILB…so he probably won’t see a lot of time except for ST. Dennis Morris might not make the team…Terrence Austin has done OK…but isn’t winning the KR/PR battle. Brandon Banks is a guy to watch….5’7 – 149lbs…UFA out of KState. Kid runs a 4.2 – 40 and already took 1 punt return to the house.

Two questions:
Would you be interested in trading for Coles again? We’ll take some draft picks :)
WHY DID YOU RELEASE DARYLL CLARK??? CLEARLY HE’S THE NEXT DONOVAN MCNABB.
Coles: Absolutely!…we’ll give you a 2037 7th round draft pick.
Daryll Clark: Ha….#17 is a cursed # for QBs in DC (Campbell, Wuerffel)…he screwed himself from the start.

I would take Brad Smith.....
not Coles though….been there….done that! Thats like re-marrying an ex-wife,
A question that usually always gets asked over the course of the week:
What is your personal opinion of the New York Jets for the 2010 season?
I just checked out the W/L record between our two teams, and we have played 9 with you winning 8…what’s the secret? lol

My best friend is a Jets fan (probably reading this)
So I get to hear all the minute details of the team. I’m a big fan, glad they got Rex, cautiously optimistic about Sanchez, and eager to see what Shonn Greene does. I think Cromartie could have an amazing season if Revis could get back to playing instead of over-analyzing how much money he makes compared to the rest of the league (Oakland should never be a benchmark).
I’m a little worried about the expectations this year. though When they’re high is when the Jets seem to falter (among other teams). Last year they were under the radar, to a degree, and I think that helped them go 3 games into the playoffs. Now that they’re the hot pick, hopefully it doesn’t go to their heads.
I think they’re 10-6. Where they get in the playoffs depends on matchups and injuries.
The Redskins rejected Rex Ryan as a candidate a couple years ago
That worked out well.

My opinion
I’m not completely sold on Sanchez. If the Jets do happen to make it to the Super Bowl, I believe it’ll more so be in spite of Sanchez, not because of Sanchez. But I could be wrong of course. I believe Sanchez has everything he needs on offense to succeed, and it’ll ultimately be his quality of play to determine how far your team goes (at least on offense). I believe your defense is definitely Super Bowl-quality so you’re set on that side of the ball (as you already knew anyway).
Regardless, I’m having a hard time believing that you all will be able to live up to Rex Ryan’s expectations and/or live up to the hype surrounding your team. I believe very few teams have been able to actually meet the expectations/hype surrounding their team though. I think you’ll have a lot of teams going after you all and so you’ll probably be in a fight every game you all play. However, in most instances, I think you’ll be able to hold your own and will end up with a 10 and 6-ish record, give or take a game or two. I wouldn’t be completely surprised if the Jets do make it to the Super Bowl, but I think you’ll end up in the AFC championship game at most, or win one playoff game at the least. Just my opinion.
I kind of feel like this could be a good year for the Skins. I like McNabb throwing deep to Moss and short to Cooley and Davis. You’ve got a whole lot of questions at RB though. I assume Portis will be the starter, but is there a fan favorite at this point?
I would say Portis....
Johnson was not impressive in his first true test ….but it was against the Ravens. Parker has yet to get any meaningful looks this preseason….which shows how much he has impressed the coaches so far (sarcasm). That leaves Ryan Torain and Keiland Williams….whom have both gotten significant looks this preseason….and although not home runs….have looked competent. I would say Torain has an edge bc of the Shanahan connection from Denver…although I heard today that both, Torain and Williams, were told by the coaching staff they have a shot at making this team over LJ and WP! I am sure a few others would say they miss Marcus Mason from our previous few camps….he was a young and impressive workhorse for us the past few years in preseason…but got cut like 5 times!
Def Portis...
Ryan Torain has thoroughly impressed so far (Shanahan drafted him 2008). I don’t think he’ll see much action this week though.

A Hayensworth question, but just about football. I read today that he will play on Friday, but how much is he going to play? and will he be with the 1st or 2nd/3rd team for the final quarter?

How is the zone blocking scheme working for you?
And does it seem to be working better in pass or run blocking?
Also, how does your secondary look to you so far?
To what extent is McNabb expected to adapt his style of play to your current receiving corps or some other aspect of your offense?
What players have been pleasant surprises for you this far?

Zone Blocking: Hit and miss….against Buffalo….we looked great. Against the Ravens…although not horrible…..it wasn’t great……McNabb got hurt. The zone blocking scheme has actually been used in Washington for years….just in a different form than Shannahan’s…so it’s not as big of an adjustment as our defensive shift from a 4-3 to the 3-4 hybrid!
Secondary: The secondary looks good….which we expected for the most part. The big concern for most of us fans was making sure Laron Landry got back to the SS position. He is a liability at FS or anything that has him in space….but if you put him in the box….he is a beast. He has looked great. Our corners…although not on the level of Revis, Cromartie, and Wilson…..are solid. Carlos Rogers has stone hands but is a solid starting corner…..Deangelo Hall is our playmaker and has shown much improved positioning this year in run support. We have Phillip Buchanon as a third corner with youth behind them. Our secondary really isn’t much of a ? mark except for Kareem Moore getting hurt. He has been very impressive in spot duty at FS the past couple seasons and has been a camp favorite this year. We also have very solid backups at safety in Reed Doughty and Chris Horton.
McNabb: I haven’t heard, and do not think, that any adjustments are being made to McNabb’s style at all. If anything, they are adapting the offense to him, which is how it should be done.
Surprise Players: I would say Kareem Moore taking the FS position was a surprise for some. We have 2 young receivers that are quickly turning into fan favorites as well in Anthony Armstrong and Brandon Banks. Both are small….but Armstrong is our leading receiver this preseason after playing in the AFL a couple years. Banks is tiny…..5’7" 149lbs……but is a Sproles type threat in space. He is a 4.2 second 40 yard guy that has already taken a punt back for a TD this preseason….something this team has sorely missed the past few years. Ryan Torain has also been impressive at the RB position. On defense….Perry Riley has at least impressed me this preseason considering his draft position. He seems to have already locked up a back-up spot at LB.
To bad McNabb isn't playing
It would had been a real test for our Revis less defense. Now if Kyle Wilson gets a pick it won’t count because Rex Grossman probably threw it right to him.
I think you guys will be fine w/ or w/out Revis....
Rex Ryan’s confidence and bravado seem infectious. I watch his interviews and just want to go outside and hit people….hard. I think just his confidence spreading through the organization is enough to make an avg team borderline great. You just better hope he never loses the team in some way……bc he also seems like a guy it would be easy to hold a grudge against. I think you guys are solid top to bottom…..but your season will hinge on Sanchez growing in his second year and taking a true leadership role in the production aspects of your offense. The run can take you far…..but you still need to be able to throw it. He is the wild-card…..IMO!
Good game guys....
I thought it was a great game…..competitive to the end…hard hitting…..and well played. We wish you guys the best of luck this year!!!
