Jets & Revis To Announce Deal Wednesday?

From Tim Cowlishaw's twitter:

Revis and Jets announce new deal, probably Wednesday. You heard it here first. "Inside information!"

It seems strange that Tim Cowlishaw would have this information. However let's all hope so, and let's hope it's reasonable if a deal has been done.

I hope that this is a credible report and we can finally put this dark cloud to bed. I'm sure Revis wants to be on the field, he's missed enough time already. Luckily he's good enough to pick it straight back up.

Questions arise whether this is a long term deal or a short term plug deal. We'll get into that if/when a deal is announced. This is the first positive piece of news on these negotiations we've had all summer.

If it wasn’t for his other quality post (all the ones that are non-Revis), I would totally think that was true.

Cmon. Give it to me.

It would make a lot more sense for them to make an arbitrary deadline under the guys of making a trade before camp starts to give both Revis and the new player(s) time to get acclimated. The fact that the Jets and Revis allowed this thing to go the Hard Knocks route leads me to believe that this is all being done tongue in cheek. They both know they’re going to work it out, but theyre driving up interest in the brand and theyre getting Wilson as many snaps as possible to get up to speed. But Revis is going to need at least one pre-season game to make sure he’s football ready.

I’m guessing he’ll be signed Sunday/Monday.

I still think if that was the case they could have done an even better job of playing it up, giving more details, etc. It going to be interesting to see how much access they give HBO, once they have things in place, so they can play it up for the cameras. Wonder if it gets featured this week or next.

more importantly as Dave said I hope this is a reasonable deal for the Jets.

How?

How could this guy know that a deal will be announced when the Jets and their agents have said all the negotiations will be confidential? In that sense, how could Manish know that there isn’t a deal? I was expecting for the Revis’ agents and the Jets to release a joint statement one day that they have agreed to a deal. I didn’t expect any leaks to be allowed.

by chrebetsthebet on Aug 22, 2010 4:41 PM EDT reply actions

Confidential means no open statements to the press. Like it or not people still talk, agents, reps, players, friends of players. Even with the confidentiality tag, some things get out. No idea if this is credible but like Dave said, we’ll find out for sure on Wednesday.

Guys, here's what Glauber said on Newsday.com

Since a couple guys out there can’t read it if they don’t subscribe to Newsday or Cablevision. And here’s the link for those who can: http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/glauber-s-nfl-hot-reads-1.811959/twitter-report-jets-revis-close-on-contract-1.2230067

Ok, first of all, I’m just going to say that this is one of the most bizarro reporting jobs I’ve ever done in journalism, and is reflective of the wacky world of communication we live in. So bear with me if it takes a little while to get it all out.

Let’s start here:

In a post on his Twitter account at around 3:30 p.m., Dallas Morning News columnist Tim Cowlishaw wrote: "Revis and Jets announce new deal, probably Wednesday. You heard it here first. “Inside information!”"

This was a stunning revelation, given the secretive nature of talks since the two sides agreed not to speak publicly about negotiations. And there have been a few follow-up tweets by Jets beat reporters, including @TheJetsStream (Manish Mehta of the Daily News) and @JennyVrentas (of the Star-Ledger), as well as ESPN’s @Adam_Schefter suggesting that the report is not accurate.

There was also some speculation from Profootballtalk.com’s @GreggRosenthal that Cowlishaw’s account was hacked.

Well, I can say with reasonable assurance that Cowlishaw’s account has NOT been hacked. How? Well, I tweeted Cowlishaw and asked “is that really you saying that Revis signing is imminent?”

I also called Cowlishaw on his cell phone, but did not get a call back. However, I did get the following back.

“@BobGlauber Read what I wrote, Cubby (so u know it’s me). Did I say imminent or announcement probably will be wednesday?”

The key word in here: “Cubby.” That’s the nickname I gave to Cowlishaw years ago when he was a beat reporter covering the Cowboys. So if Cowlishaw’s Twitter account had been hacked, then it would have been an awfully unusual coincidence for said hacker to know that this is what I call Cowlishaw.

So rest assured that Cowlishaw is, in fact, reporting that a deal is close and could be announced as soon as Wednesday. (btw, Cubby, what the hell’s the difference between “imminent” and “announcement will probably be wednesday?”)

Now, is this really the case that a deal is close and could be announced Wednesday, when the Jets will hold an open practice at their old training camp at Hofstra? We’re about to find out.

In the meantime, the only two sides with direct knowledge of the negotiations are holding to their posture of not speaking publicly. There is radio silence from the Jets and Revis’ agents, Jonathan Feinsod and Neil Schwartz.

by umohan21 on Aug 22, 2010 6:15 PM EDT reply actions

Sounds like the deal is done.

by Crackback on Aug 22, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

mort says he spoke to calishaw and confirmed his account was not hacked

by dabu7 on Aug 22, 2010 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions

My speculation

The Cowboys were on “Hard Knocks” a couple years ago, and somebody involved with the process knows something that was shot by the show. This guy also works for ESPN, and people in the business generally keep in touch and network.

With all the amount of footage the crew shoots, there are people hired to put that footage in the editing system and log it. They have to note which players appear where, what kind of shots etc. These guys have to sign a confidentiality agreement not to reveal anything about the show.

My guess is that someone got to see something that although it may or may not make the show, it’s enough to make you think that a deal is close.

Im guessing

Some hard knocks editor saw video that indicates they have a deal, and still has contact with cowlishaw from the cowboys days. Only way the cowlishaw would get the info before beat writers or big football writers.

So pretty much what dvdvil said

Cowlishaw has too much to lose to make this stuff up

I mean by 1st posting this, and then defending it, i believe him that someone close who had someway of knowing something told him. I mean, he has too much to lose as a credible reporter. He would burn bridges, and could even lose his job by making stuff up.

I don’t think he would ever lose his job over it, but his reputation is absolutely on the line with this report. He’s put a lot of faith in this “source”. I can’t believe that Cowlishaw would make this up, but his trusted source could be wrong. Let’s hope not, let’s have Mangold and Revis signed this week.

+1

Who knows? Maybe both will be signed on Wed. But Mangold better get announced before Schwartz & Feinsod Revis.

I mean his source could be wrong, dont get me wrong, ill believe it when i see it, but by seeing him defending this, he trusts this source very much. We will just have to wait

Well Bob Glauber seems to be backing him up.

And Glauber has never given me reason to doubt him; he’s always given reliable information. So if Glauber believes Cubby, then I do too.

That’s the interesting part of this, if this were just an “average” source, I don’t think Tim would be backing him so much. We’ll just have to wait, but nothing in Tim’s history suggests that he is not convinced by this report.

My friend,

All this speculation is just killing me.

There better be something monumental happening this week, or else I will be PISSED. Royally so.

Bravo either way.

I’d rather see Mangold get signed before Schwartz & Feinsod I mean Revis. But I surely hopes this serves to bring our star corner back home.

Anyway, does anyone happen to know who Mangold’s agent is? Maybe he should school Douche 1 and Douche 2 in Negotiations 101.
