Earlier this week, ESPN aired an hourlong special looking at Alabama's fall practice Training Days: Rolling with the Alabama Crimson Tide. That featured interviews with Coach Nick Saban in his office and one astute viewer noticed that there was a New York Jets playbook on the man's desk with the name "RYAN" clearly visible on the spine.
If anyone is interested in checking it out for themselves the show will be reaired tomorrow as well as throughout next week on ESPNU.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate.
Wonder if we got a copy of the Bama book? ;-)

if you would like to see saban's defensive playbook
here is lsu’s from 2001 (pdf alert). brophy, the guy who caught this for us, has a fantastic breakdown of it on his website (be sure to look for parts ii and iii).

This is very interesting.
I wonder if Saban uses some of Rex Ryans defense, with this working two ways. For Bama these kids get to learn a pro style defense, and not just a pro style, but an exotic pro style defense. For Rex and the Jets, Bama may become a great spot to land some UDFA because guys always slip thru the cracks, and with these kids we would be sure that they have had a head start in learning about our defense. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Jets start picking up a few of the mid level Bama players who don’t get drafted. This is very interesting. Obviously people will have their opinions on Saban, but he is a tremendously good coach and having his name affiliated with Rex Ryan in anyway is not a bad thing.
Will need to remember to focus on him tomorrow. Was so excited to have football back on Monday, I forgot to look out for any individual bubble players.

coach saban is known to be a student of the game...
and as much hay that is made in the press about his departure from the dolphins, the fact is he clearly has strong ties to the pros. he’s a belichick protege from their time at the browns and
so having the playbook of a known defensive specialist such as ryan on his desk isn’t overly surprising.
moreover, ryan’s 3-4 seems to have a lot of similarities to coach saban’s, particularly in the emphasis on the secondary. last week we broke this down by the numbers, so you might want to give it a gander and see if it jives with what the jets are doing.
now just that alone would pique his interest but then when you add the possibility of putting players into the pros – a clear recruiting asset – it would be downright dumb to not do this research. (i believe this is dookiehead’s assessment)
right now there are just a dozen or so teams in college football that run the 3-4 and the players at the most successful of those squads are highly sought by the nfl teams that run it. partially because of the specific types of players it calls for but also for familiarity (this is cory reamer’s ace in the hole).

Just had a quick flick through the breaking down posts and it looks like impressive work. Appreciate you giving me some reading to do with my Saturday morning Coffee.
It does make perfect sense, and I’m not complaining about Rex making some friends with some college coaches who run a similar system, perhaps getting some inside info on some of the players that may fly under the radar for scouts i.e Reamer.
Will take a look tomorrow though but I’m sure it’s a similar system.
