Darrelle Revis: Common misconceptions affecting some perceptions?

If you looked up shut down corner in the dictionary you will see a picture of Deion Sanders right next to it. In his 14 year career Deion Sanders exemplified this term to the fullest extent. In this current decade this term is associated with players such as Charles Woodson, Nnamdi Asomugha, etc. But now a new face has come to the fold.

In one year Darrelle Revis has established himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the league. Though some may go as far as to call him a shut down corner, and even the greatest of all time. There are some misconceptions that this kid could be even better than Deion himself, but I'm not buying into the hype.

Andre Johnson was shut down against the Jets, but he was their only threat. You see usually when a team double teams your #1 receiver that becomes an opportunity for someone else to step up. Well the Texans #2 receiver Kevin Walter was inactive. For those who don't know who Kevin Walter is, he was the player that stepped up for Johnson in 07' when he got injured. He became the Texans number one receiver and after 8 games in 07', Walter had 40 catches for 512 yards while also posting a career high game at Jacksonville in week 6 with 12 catches for 160 yards.

Your probably thinking what about their Pro Bowl tight end Owen Daniels? Two words: David Harris. Harris was a top 3 coverage linebacker in 09' and neutralized Daniels to a pedestrian 4 receptions for 44 yards.

So now who does Schaub turn to? Well its not very promising when your runningback and fullback are your next best options.

"All week he was talking about being a shutdown corner, but there really are no shutdown corners in the league because they have help most of the game," Moss said. "I probably could be a shutdown corner if I had (Patriots S Brandon) Meriweather over the top for the whole game. I think I could be a corner."

- Randy Moss

Now call me bias, but i really find it hard to believe that Revis covered Moss with ABSOLUTELY no help, and for Randy Moss a 12 year vet not to give a young corner credit should tell you something. If that was the case then that would allow your safety to roll his coverage towards Julian Edelman aka Wes Welker Jr. who filled in quite admirably for Welker while he was out with a knee injury. After Moss and Welker the Patriots have no other legitimate receiving options.

This was probably the most anticipated match up between these two, especially after their last encounter in week 2. Once again call me bias, but i find it hard to believe that Revis covered Moss 1 on 1 with no safety help. Revis is good but he is no Deion Sanders. You know what ill just take Revis's word for it and say he had no safety help, with that being said now that Moss is taken care of that should free up the safety to double cover Wes Welker right? Clearly someone other than Wes Wlker is being double covered if he goes off and catches 15 receptions for nearly 200 yards! You would think your safety would be free to take care of that underneath stuff that Welker does since Moss is being "locked down" 1 on 1. Hmm guess not.

This was a situation of Jake Delhomme being one of the worst quarterbacks in 2009, in this game alone he threw 4 interceptions. Steve Smith was open more times than his numbers would suggest, but Delhomme was either over or underthrowing him. After Steve Smith there is no other option, hell in his first 3 years Dwayne Jarrett has proved himself to be no better than his USC counterpart MIke Williams.

Clearly Steve Smith had a step on Revis, but had to comeback due to an underthrown ball by Delhomme led to an interception. It was a good play by Revis, but don't overrate the fact it was a poorly thrown ball.

Vincent Jackson went off on the Jets, sure Revis wasn't covering him the whole game, but i thought that's what he was supposed to do. Anyway one of the passes thrown to Jackson while being covered by Revis resulted in an interception. Jackson clearly out jumped Revis for the ball, in which Revis made a smart play by knocking Jackson's hand off the ball on the way down before he secured the reception. Jackson makes that play 97% of the time, interceptions like those happen every blue moon.

There was no need in highlighting their first matchup in week 16, as the Colts rested their starters. Now in this matchup Wayne was held to pedestrian numbers, but who needs Wayne when you have Payton Manning. Manning turned to the 1 on 1 matchups courtesy of Lito Sheppard and Dwight Lowery, and needless to say Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie couldn't be stopped. Though Wayne is their #1 guy, the passing game doesn't rely solely on him.

Disclaimer: I did not include Revis's matchups with T.O. for the mere fact that he is washed up. This is not the T.O. of the 90's and early 2000's.
