Coles Signs, Returns to NJ for Third Tenure

Today, as expected,Laveranues Coles worked out with the Jets and signed a one-year contract. The deal is believed to be for the league minimum, and as a veteran, if Coles is on the opening day roster, he would make $855,000.

Rich Cimini and ESPN New York announced the signing, and shared a Coles' quote which put things into perspective, as far as what Coles' role on the team will be:

"It's an insurance policy for them," Coles said. "Those first four games are very important for the team to get where they want to go. It's an opportunity for me to come in and see what I can still do, but there's a slim chance I'll be there after four games. There's a good chance I'll get released; it depends on how things go. They were honest and open about it. It is what it is."

We discussed this yesterday here on GGN. Coles will likely be the WR3 in weeks 1-4 when Santonio Holmes is serving his suspension, but after Holmes returns he may not see any time. Coles even goes on to say he may actually be released in the above quote.

Unfortunately, number 87 is now occupied by David Clowney, so Coles will have to choose another number.

Coles had 43 catches for 514 yards and 5 TDs in 2009.

Since the face been revealed the game got real

I think Clowney will end up having to change his number in deference to the Sizzleman. LC’s old teammates will probably encourage it.

I’d think that might happen, but then if there is a possibility he is gone after week 4……is there much point. DC might be able to get a little $$ out of it anyway, and it’s not like he’s really done much with the number.

Yup, it’s not really a big deal. However, there might be a chance he’ll end up with the same number he had in Cincy (#11) come opening day.

I hope not for 2 reasons, the obvious one…..and he was hardly comfortable in Cincy….I’m not superstitious but some of these athletes are, it might all be in a number.

If I was Clowney I’d be satisfied with the roster spot and take whatever number they told me to.

Wonderful

I’d like to see what he can do, and having him for peanuts is even better.

Coles has always been a Jet. Sure, things have changed. Last time he was on the roster he was the only person who could bring down a pass to convert third down. Now he’s going to be relatively low on the depth chart. Still, I think he could have something left in the tank and being on such a talented roster could help bring it out.

I was kind of disgusted with fans for calling him diva or a malcontent just because he wanted to get paid. But unfortunately you have to allow people to have their retarded opinions. This and all the other press releases he’s done speak volumes to how professional and lacking any melodrama the aging receiver is.

It is what it is, like he said. I’m disappointed that they’re already looking to release him down the stretch, but that’s business. And you never know, maybe he’ll show them something.

Either way, I’ll always be happy to have him around. Especially at that price.

You've gotta respect Coles' Honesty

He’s going in there with his eyes wide open. Assuming he makes the team, he makes a minimum of $855 K, and he probably plays 4 games. And heck, he has the chance to impress them enough to stick, or to stick if one of the other WRs gets injured. And even if they cut him, they might give him an assistant coach position.

Watching the Bengals Hard Knocks

Got kinda excited about Coles and found someone with a tape of it. LC kills his guy in their “Oklahoma Drill” (basically one-on-one run blocking). Not a lot of him in there so far though.

I think he got a pretty good dealat making $210k+ a game and he wont even have to start :D

So we just signed a guy who deteriorated so far beyond productivity that even he doesn't no if he can contribute... anything.

And who knows that he will be cut after 4 games.

Why are we doing this again?

J-Co is a trusted go-to possession guy; thats pretty much Keller’s domain as well. LC can’t get down field anymore, and everybody knows it. Which is why nobody respected Cincy’s passing game last year. SO he’ll basically be the 3rd option in an area of the field already occupied by 2 other trusted targets and will bring with him another defender into the box to load up against our running game.

At least Clowney’s speed needs to be respected and will mandate a Safety hanging back, which will in turn allow the Braylon and others to work underneath in short and intermediate routes.

On a team with an above-average running game and a legit #1 to draw atention and a big-armed QB, LC did squat.

Can somebody please explain how this makes any football sense? How are we better as a result of this signing? Because the way i see it. Some poor sap who could have been a real contributor to this team on specials and who has an upside is going to get cut to make room for this washed-up has-been.

Why roll the dice on an old man who doesn’t even believe in himself when you can roll the dice on a youngin with freakish athleticism who just needs a little coachin?

Nope, he's taking the roster spot of Santonio Holmes

For the first 4 weeks. It’s better to have a vet who can contribute a bit on day 1, and get cut later, than to have a young guy who we help to develop and then another team reaps the benefits after week 4.

Holmes will be activated after week 4. Barring injuries, someone then will need to be cut.

I don’t understand the fear of letting someone like Clowney go, he’s a great guy and a great humanitarian, but there is a David Clowney or 20 every single year that are available. He’s been in the league 3 years already. He doesn’t do a great deal of anything on special teams and has caught 15 passes in 3 years. If he were excelling in practice he would get more game time. I just don’t see this special untapped potential that a lot of people see in Clowney. None of these guys are indispensable apart from Holmes/Edwards/Cotchery and probably Smith. Allison/Clowney and guys like that have to play special teams and work their way up. Clowney has been given more of a chance than Allison.

Coles was a great move, 500 yards and 5 TD’s last year is not great but it’s not horrendous for a #3 receiver the first 4 games for less than $1 million. I’ll take that for sure, Cotchery can work underneath but he can also do a fine job outside, and I actually think a 3 wide set of Edwards/Cotch and Coles is a pretty decent back-up for the first 4.

Im not so much advocating for Clowney (although he does stretch the field at least) than I am for a raw but talented LB (Basped) or TE (Cumberland) or DB (Warren) or maybe a smart, tough special teams guru (Reamer). Any of these guys could be the one to get axed to make room for Coles. And I would hate to see a player like that cut for someone who will contribute little and who’s likely to be cut after week 4.

by Crackback on Jul 31, 2010 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Pretty sure it will be one of the wide receivers who gets the chop whether that be Coles or someone else. Which in my opinion is not worth worrying about in the slightest, if Coles does hang on then either Clowney or Allison gets cut and that’s not really a big deal. If he does offer little, then he’ll get cut and we are right back here which again is no big deal. I’m more confident in Coles being able to contribute to us than I am Clowney even if it is just over those 4 weeks.

Call me crazy

but if the staff and coaches had confidence in the existing receiver set they wouldn’t have signed him in the first place. He held a workout for them. They know what they are dealing with here. I doubt they would make room for someone inferior to what they have.

At that salary I fail to see the harm. Either way I trust Rex and co. over your perception.

by Bro Namath on Jul 31, 2010 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

How dare anyone state an opinion that runs contrary to the omiscient and infallible Rex and Co. Why should anyone state their opinion in the comments section of a blog?

Funny

given how much of an absolutist you’ve been.

The point stands. He’s on board for a reason. Even if only a patch.

Awesome...

The guy always had heart…yeah, it’s about the money, too, but look at how many times he keeps coming back to a team that keeps trading him away. Glad he’s back, and hope it all works out that they keep him for the slot in a four receiver set. Best of luck Laveraneus!
