Marques Douglas Agrees to Terms with Miami
No Jets' offseason is complete until one of ours goes to either New England or Miami --- that has now happened.
NYDN's Manish Mehta is reporting DE Marques Douglas and Miami Dolphins have agreed to a 2-year deal worth approximately $2.5 million, which is why he will NOT be returning to the Jets for the 2010-11 season. Douglas started 12 of 16 games for GangGreen in 2009, and now the Jets DL takes a small hit and loses some depth.
After Phins' DE Philip Merling suffered a season-ending Achilles injury this week and is now a likely candidate for the 'non-football injury list,' Miami took a proactive approach and sought after Douglas.
So Parcells got his man, and now Douglas is re-united with DC Mike Nolan who coached him in Baltimore and San Francisco.
Here are his 2009 stats, per ESPN.Com:
| Stats Overview | Tackles | Misc | Interceptions | |||||||||||
| SPLIT | TOT | SOLO | AST | SACK | STF | STFY | FF | BK | INT | YDS | AVG | LNG | TD | PD |
| 2009 | 64 | 35 | 29 | 1.5 | 4 | 15 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Career | 436 | 310 | 126 | 20.5 | 43 | 59 | 7 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0.0 | 0 | 0 | 10 |

How do you feel about him leaving?

To the fish?
I’m sure this has nothing to do with divisions. Yeah, right. But it’s not reasonable to think you can keep everyone, especially in a non-cap year with the uncertainty ahead.
But the fish? Oy!
I think this is probably a case of take what you can get. 2 year deal for a man his age is a good deal. He is the epitome of solid if unspectacular. He did a decent job for us, Miami have got themselves a good pro. However I won’t be losing any sleep over it.

He was good against the run. I don’t really get why the Jets didn’t resign him.

I don't either, he was cheap.
But then again I don’t understand why we didn’t offer a deal to Feely either…

Maybe Rex has confidence in some of the younger unproven guys, and wants to give them a good go this year.

Not a sexy player but I hope fanss understand this is a bigger loss then most realize
Since the face been revealed the game got real
That’s the way I see it as well Bleach. For some reason, with the exception of Scott’s signing, Rex feels that the secondary is the only part of the defense worth addressing. I don’t get it.

The D-Line in Rex’s defense doesn’t need to be anything much more than capable in Rex’s defense. Your CB’s, however, have to be great.

Probably wanted too much $$. And Last year, they weren’t sure of DeVito and Co, now they know they can play.

This pretty much means Ellis is staying also.
Another thing I took from it all.

Was it Mike Lombardi who said he would be gone?
Never thought Ellis wouldn’t be here on opening day.

Not a play-maker, but a pretty good guy to have on your roster. Consistent and versatile
Versatile, can play some DT too.
Consistent in that you know what you’re getting game-by-game, and he’s a good tackler also.
As John said, better run-stopper than pass-rusher…as he only had 1.5 sacks last season.
He’s not flashy, but he gets the job done. Good pickup for you all.

Smart
He is also a very smart player…last season we had coaches on the field for each part of the defense, Scott for LB Leonhard for DBs and then Douglas for the D-line. He can teach methods to the younger players they have

He’ll fill the hole at DE. Don’t expect much more. He’s a nice, work-hard player.

Thanks for the insight fellas.
As your resident often intruding Phin Fan I appreciate hearing your comments on him, as I really didn’t know a lot about him.
The loss of Merling wasn’t a huge blow, as I don’t believe he was expected to start, but we definitely needed the depth. It sounds like he’s a consistent player, isn’t going to knock your socks off on plays, but he’s also not going to have you standing around going, “Dude wtf did you just do?” And I’ll take that. Considering he started 12 games for you, at least we know he can handle the job.
I’m not sure how much of this was a “steal a guy from a division rival” as it was a “Holy shit, who is available?” I know we showed interest in Spears from Dallas (our usual temp service agency)
Thanks again guys. Can’t wait for a grind it out season this year…. as much as we as fans hate to admit it, we both have teams that have a lot to prove. We have to prove we can get into the playoffs and win again, and you guys have to prove that you didn’t get lucky last year.
Again, appreciate the insight.
So there I was.....asleep when it happened.....the buzzing of the blackberry woke me up....still groggy, I rubbed my eyes, and read the incoming email.
