If the Jets Were To Field a "Futbol" Team....
Since it is really hard to focus on too much NFL related stuff today, you know, because Landan Donovan is a boss and all. I read the "Shutdown Corner" blog on Yahoo! sports, and they created a world cup team with NFL players. Yes, I am about to do the same, exept with Jets players.
Let's keep in mind my soccer knowledge goes about as far as Fifa 10 will allow. Suggestions are more than welcome. I'll use a 4-1-2-1-2 formation (Keeper, 4 defenders, 1 def-mid, 2 wingers, 1 attacking mid, 2 strikers).
Also, I realize that no player on the Jets could actually play soccer at the World Cup Level. Let's assume we've replaced their lifetime of football training for futbol training.
Keeper: Antonio Cromartie - I think you would like a guy who is huge, athletic, and reactive, and Cro has all of those things. He can catch the ball and jump high.
Defenders: Darrelle Revis, Santonio Holmes, David Clowney, Kyle Wilson - I went with speed/footwork here. Revis is an obvious choice because he can run with anyone. Santonio, Clowney have speed to run with any striker.
Defensive Mid: David Harris - He's not exactly the most agile guy in the world, but he would just bully people around. He'll get the tough challenges, and he's got good coverage ability for an ILB.
Wingers: Jim Leonhard, Joe McKnight - Jim would be the perfect guy to get down and dirty and win the ball, then pass it along up-field. My only concerns with McKnight are whether he can run that long without making a mess on the pitch.
Attacking Mid: Mark Sanchez - Again, I'm no expert, but I think you would want a guy with good vision to set people up for goals, yet still be able to make play on you own. The Sanchito can obviously pass the ball, but he's a pretty mobile guy too. He's not a burner, but he's a pretty shifty guy in the pocket. Being Mexican has to give him some natural soccer skills anyway.
Strikers: Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery- Braylon, I think, would be the ideal striker. Size, speed, and plays physical enough. Besides, you don't have to catch the ball!
This little diagram only works in "Wide" view mode on your page. Change your setting on the right side of your screen.
GK-Cromartie
Def - Revis Def - Clowney Def - Wilson Def - Holmes
CDM - Harris
LW - McKnight RW - Leonhard
CAM - Sanchez
LS - Cotchery RS - Edwards

Considering Jason Taylor looks almost exactly like Tim Howard, he may be a logical choice for keeper.
(Bart Scott has said he also looks like Xerxes from 300. Can’t disagree)

I'm way ahead of Bart.

I think Cotchery is better suited for the midfield
Possession-based receiver, controls the tempo of the game and moves the chains. Similar to midfielders linking passes and creating opportunities.
Interesting post though, nice work. Enjoyed it.

That’s true. Maybe switch him with McKnight

I like this since I heard about it.

I don't agree...
instead of Braylon, I’d have Ladanian Tomlinson as a my RS. He’d beast.
GANG GREEN ALL DAY!
You see, it's not about how you won the game, it's about how you played the game.... there's a difference.
Love thinking about players in other sports...
But defenders should be big, tall, and willing to run straight through people. I actually think Edwards would be a good defender and Holmes would be a good striker. Likewise, Shonn Greene should be an outside back, because he’s such a bruiser. I would love to see Revis marking the opponents best player and just keeping them out of the game (like Greece did to Messi against Argentina).
Sanchez is a great idea in the middle of the field distributing.
Also consider: Danny Woodhead at striker and Brad Smith at OMid – he would be adaptable on D and O.
I’d almost say Braylon would be a great goalie.
The problem is he would give up too many rebounds.

I actually almost put im at keeper, but Cro is a slightly better athelete, IMO. He’s probably a little more agile, too.

I;m not so sure about that. Defenders should be strong and fast, not necessairly big. Revis fits the bill perfectly. Because if you’re defenders are slower than the strikers, youre dead. Look at Ronaldo, he’s the ideal size for his position. But a good defender like John Terry isn’t exactly imimidating at a glance.

4-1-3-2 formation...looks good
but i would have Revis as my center backs….always put your best defender in the middle of defensive backs.
and move Wilson to RB. (same thing as i said about Crom)
Also put Holmes as GK…great hands..remember the English GK Green and SB43 catch.
and put Crom as my LB…good defender but can attack on the wings
