Green and Disgruntled

Here is my take on the contract situation of Revis and Mangold, which can also be viewed HERE on the Jersey Jets Fan.

It's is starting to get serious with the Jets and the upcoming contract situations. Nick Mangold, arguably the best center in the NFL today, has recently said he is 50-50 on attending next weeks minicamp. The possibility of skipping minicamp comes at the time when Mangold and Darrelle Revis are both looking for long-term extensions from the Jets Front Office. Yet the Jets have not been able to satisfy either played, both of whom are becoming increasingly upset with the Jets organization.

"Of course, I think about it," Mangold said. "I got a short career. It's always on the back of my mind. It's been on the back of my mind since February when they said, there's x, y and z why weren't not doing it."

The center also said the contract talks have taken some of the fun out of the game this offseason.

"It takes a little bit out," Mangodl said. "I don't want to have to deal with it. I'm forced into dealing with it. It's kind of a pain."

While I am not going to sit here and act like I understand the complexities of signing these contracts in the currently unstable NFL labor environment, the Jets need to retain these players. Not only Revis and Mangold, but D-Brick and David Harris as well. All four of these guys were home-runs in recent drafts and have played admirably in Jets uniforms. If the Jets re-sign or give extensions to the four players, they will have a solid nucleus of leaders in the locker-room for years to come.

These deals need to get done ASAP. The Jets players with soon to be expiring offers really want one thing, financial security. The average person can say all the bull shit they want about how they are making millions so they should play and shut up, but in a similar position, we would all react the same way. Mangold is about as blue collar as it gets, far from some flashy and greedy Hollywood wannabe. But he is smart enough to know that the average NFL career is a short one, and you have to make your money while you can because an injury or a bad season can happen in the blink of an eye. Mangold, Revis, D-Brick and Harris are all worth every penny, and if the Jets are unwilling to pay them, someone else will be, unfortunately for us Jets Fans.

after starting off with this why waste everyone’s time with an overstated and pointless post.

"212 degrees" - NY Jets 2010 offseason approach
At 211 degrees, water is hot.
At 212 degrees, water boils and makes steam.
With steam one can power a locomotive.
"One marginal degree, just like a small additional effort, can make all the difference."

Well we could look at who gets hurt if they do holdout.

I think with Revis, it may actually benefit our DBs because they’ll be rotating coverages with Revis absent and having to coverage our varied set of receivers.

On the other hand Mangold would definitely hurt if he held out of minicamps as we need these guys to gel with whoever our new LG is whether it’s Ducasse or Slausen. I think that’s when we would really statrt to have chemistry worries.

If they hold out past August 10th, according to the CBA, an extra year will tacked on to their current contract at 110% of the last stipulated year. What this means is simple, if they hold out past August 10th, they will become an unrestricted agent 1 year later. So the players are whining for nothing, because they will not want to push their FA year an extra year. Maybe they are just whiners and lazy. Would not surprise me.

There is no CBA in this year....so this doesn't come into play.

So there I was.....asleep when it happened.....the buzzing of the blackberry woke me up....still groggy, I rubbed my eyes, and read the incoming email.

Then I had a beer....took the day off work, and bought a box of condoms.

I Know, there are rules in place this year anyway.

like the august 10th deadline for example. Listen to NFL radio (sirius/xm) and they pften talk about it.

Bottom line, they’re all signed through at least this coming season, so there is no real reason anyone HAS to have their contract renegotiated. Yeah, the players might want that to make more money, but they signed a contract, live with it and show that you’re worth more on the field, not in the newspaper.

Go Jets
Go Devils

Yea I just don't understand ownerships incentive here...

unless of course the player is saying “if you sign me now it will be for less”, yes its a slightly unfair system for the players, but they signed the last CBA that put these contract rules (and salary structures for draft picks) in effect. Don’t get mad at the team, get mad at your union for putting you in this position. Do your job and you will get paid in the end, if your worried about security or injury, try to make a deal with your team, but otherwise just shut up.
