Jets-Phins: Best Combined 53-man roster
Ok, just to have a little fun (feels like forever until training camp) I made my best 53-man roster using players from the NY Jets and the Miami Dolphins current rosters.
I assigned 24 roster spots for offense, 26 for defense and 3 for special teams. Overall Miami claimed 24 spots and New York claimed 29. New York also had more starters with 14 compared with 11 for Miami.
Some might prefer choosing more or less depth at certain positions, but this is a pretty standard roster, so it is what it is.
Miami got the benefit of the doubt in a number of cases where experience and/or uncertainty were factors, like at the QB & RB positions and special teams.
Also, in choosing a roster, versatility can be a greater asset than being very good at one position. For example, I like Jake Long starting at LT, but then what about D'Brickashaw Ferguson? It seems a little extravagant to have a second elite tackle on the roster. On the other hand he's too good to leave off. So again it is what it is.
It was fun to compile this roster and I think both teams are talented and could have good seasons. Hopefully, the Jets and Phins will have a couple of great games this season.
Enjoy the post. I'm sure someone out there will disagree with my roster, but probably not too many :).

LT and RT
i rather move dbrickishaw or long to RT and have them both start over woody
Aside from Henne over Sanchez, and Dansby over Scott I agree...
Henne is not and will never be as good a QB as Sanchez.

Yea OK is that why he didn’t get drafted till the second round, and the team was so impressed with him they drafted Pat White a year later. Henne will be a decent NFL QB, but sorry he’s not Mark Sanchez’ league, and never will be.
Huh???
Brady wasn’t drafted until the the sixth round so I guess he is not in the same league as Sanchez either. We didn’t pick Pat White because it was a need. It was a sheer value pick. You guys jumped up that far to take Sanchez, who did not throw the ball as well at the Combine as Pat White did. Pat White could also add a new dimension to our Wildcat package, that ability to throw the ball out of it. I think it is too early to determine if Pat White or Mark Sanchez is a bust though ….. but some have said that about both …

You can’t really even consider somebody saying Sanchez is a bust yet. Sure, he might turn out to be, but one year is nothing. Even Gholston still has an (admittedly off-chance) shot at not being a bust.

I was mostly talking ...
about people talking about our guys calling Pat White a bust…. He was asked last year as a rookie to sit on the bench for most of the season, but then called on from the bench to come in and make plays … on a crucial game deciding drive …for instance. I think if I were to imagine the worst possibly scenario for a rookie QB to come into it would be the one we put this kid in …but people on our team have been conditioned by a lot of draft failures in the past and t hey are sometimes quick to make judgements (Ted Ginn, Jason Allen.. the list goes on forever)
The guy would literally trot out onto the field … run an option play or throw one pass on a game winning drive…then trot back off the field and not get another chance for 10 games to throw a pass. He threw a total of 5 passes last year this way and people were upset at him because he was 0-5 out of the WildPat formations. He usually just had a chance to hand the ball off, or run an option play… and did pretty well then…but we will see how much he progresses this year …
One year is definately too short to judge a player by … However… I do disagree with you on Gholston… you guys need to cut your losses and move on there… A OLB that can not make things happen in your defense .. has absolutely no hope … I would not fault him if he played in our defense last year… not so much anyway… but he played in probably the best scheme an OLB could possibly play in… Parcells has a saying about rookies … ``If they don’t bite when they’re puppies, they don’t bite.‘’ This guy does not play a position that takes a whole lot of development. You either have the instincts for it or you can’t. JT is a much better option for you guys at this point. The guy will have 10 sacks this year … if not more … I think we should have kept him around for another year … but .. I am not running things … so…

My point isn't that Pat White was/is/ or going to be a bust...
its that with the pick of a QB there it obvious the Phins weren’t very confident in Henne’s ability and future going into last season. Its not like they could afford to waste a 2nd round pick on White, just because he might be a nice fit for the Wildcat (although that might be why they reached for him when they did).
Henne isn’t Tom Brady, Tom Brady never got to show what he could do in college because he sat behind Drew Henson. Henne got to show what he was in college.
and yet he kicked your team's ass twice

I understand that you guys made it to the playoffs last year ...
But that was in spite of Sanchez… not because of him … He wasn’t asked to win games and to be honest I am not sure he could at this point… I think he could definately develop into a nice Chad Pennington style player though. He can put the ball into good spots but he doesn’t have the big arm that some other NFL QBs have.

WTF are you talking about did you watch the playoffs...
He stepped up huge, and played a huge role in both wins. He also played a huge role in the win against the Pats week 2, all while being a rookie, and not sitting and watching for a year and a half like Henne. He can make every NFL throw, and is not even close to Pennington.
Pennington was a compliment ...
I don’t know why you guys got rid of the guy … He killed us year in and year out … He took us to the playoffs after you guys replaced him for Favre … how did that work out for you?
I did not see anything spectacular from him in the playoffs… I did watch a lot more of Henne though and this is just my opinion, but he was asked to bail out his team more often and did it with inferior weapons. We had no #1 receiver … and he still made things happen… He made Ted Ginn look good at times … If you can make Ted Ginn look good against Darell Revis … you have my vote … Yes, it was only one play … but it was Ted Ginn vs. Darell Revis …. The fact that he even had the confidence to throw that ball to Ginn with the game on the line… that is enough to give it to him …

Pennington stayed hurt.
I dont think there was a year without a serious injury to him.
Great guy but it started to feel like we needed him PLUS another #1 QB to replace him when (not if) he gets hurt. Can you imagine that? yes you can cause he got hurt with you guys too.
You saw nothing spectacular from Sanchez in the playoffs? Your the only one.
He acted like a Veteran the whole time. Minus 1 bad move during garbage time against the Colts, he didnt many mistakes.
Yeah...understood...
It was actually a blessing for us though, because it meant they had to throw Henne in a year earlier than they planned… It was a little bit bumpy because we had so many injuries.. but in the end it was a good thing … One game we had one guy move from LG to RT to C to RG. The only person he didn’t replace during that game was Jake Long and our long snapper …
This year we have a guy that we know has carried us in 4th quarter comebacks… He has made plays with no #1 receiver… and this year he has one of the best in the league… he did make some dumb throws when he was trying to create something that wasn’t there.. although not as many INTs as Sanchez did, but it never once shook him. He would usually come right back and make some great throws and get us in the endzone.

Oh ... thought of something else ...
How about Bart Scott and Karlos Dansby to start … If you had those guys on the same team you would have them start over David Harris.
when does the season start.....
OK ... then I will take Dansby over Bart Scott...
Scott could “start” the first series …just long enough to be called the starter and run his mouth to opposing teams (much like Porter did for us) He does that exceptionally well… Other than that … I didn’t see much actual production out of the guy … He was a product of a really good system … as much as I hate Rex Ryan … I love the way he runs his defense …
Dansby is a playmaker … the ball just seems to find him if it is fumbled … the guy makes plays … on a crappier defensive scheme… Bart Scott played on the Ravens and then the Jets … he is a product of the defensive scheme … not talented ball player.

Dansby vs. Scott is more of a pick em to me...
I’d take Scott in the Rex Ryan 3-4, anywhere else I’d probably take Dansby.
Dansby, Scott, Crowder
in that order

Most are dead on, but...
D’brickashaw over Long, move long to RT
I actually would give Polite an edge over T Rich, for his offensive versatility
Sanchez over Henne. They are at the same level right now, but Sanchez’s ceiling is higher.
And wtf with Jason Taylor being a 3rd stringer? Even if he takes a serious decline this year, he is still better than either of the guys ahead of him on this depth chart.
yea you could put Taylor ahead of charlie anderson.
i’m a little stubborn about T Rich, but w/e :)
