Darrelle Revis Wants to Get PAID

All-Pro CB Darrelle Revis is looking to be one of the highest paid players in football.

National Football Post's Michael Lombardi reports that Revis and agent Neil Schwartz will be looking for a deal upwards of $20 million/year.

It should be noted that the source of the original information is unknown. The article by Lombardi cites ".... and the word I'm hearing is that..." . For what it's worth, NFP has taken more of a "sensational" approach to covering football recently. GGN is not challenging the validity of this article, we're just saying that the source is unknown and this tidbit should be taken with a grain of salt.

This would make Revis the highest paid CB in the history. Raiders' CB Asomugha currently holds that title, as he earned himself a 3-year contract worth $45.3 million last season. Could that be one of the contributing factors as to why Revis wants to be paid so much? The top-rated CB in the NFL surely deserves top-notch money.... right?

I hope this is either purely his agent talking, or speculation

No doubt he deserves top-notch money… he is a top notch-player. But Asomugha is making $15.1 a year, and the jump from 15 to 20 mm is insane. I always respected Revis for him being so good, and demanding little attention. If wanting to be the highest paid player is HIS own necessity, I may have lost a bit of respect for him. Nonetheless, we need him. Im sure Mike-T will be able to knock out a more reasonable contract than > $20milion per year. We can’t forget we still have Mangold, and Harris contracts to talk about.

The first rule of negotiation is to set your asking price higher than what you’re actually seeking. Revis isn’t expecting $20 million, but a contract in the Asomugha range is a realistic picture. It will be interesting to see how Mike handles it.

I think that's the most reasonable evaluation of this news.

Revis isn’t stupid, but he isn’t cheap, either.

That would be absurd. Even $15 million is absurd money to pay a CB

and I don’t care if Revis is a better CB than Asomugha. Oakland is not a paradigm for conducting NFL business. If it comes down to either paying Revis $15 mil or trading him, then in my opinion trade Revis.

still have the option to buy back 2 years for 10 million

as much as I love Revis and have the uttmost respect for how he plays the game Im inclined to agree. Even 15 mill is high and if he wants more than that buy back the two years, he still has to play up to his own hype to get the contract he wants then sign and trade him. Def not the popular option but no 1 man is bigger than team. ALot of Jets are playing for contracts and we for once are in the priveleged position of having young talent AND veterans to fill cruical positions. All that being said Revis is one of the few players that is worth the money and Rex being so high on him its 90% he is a JET for years to come.

Dude, if you think Revis is not worth 15 million dollars, you out yo mind, fool.

cant exactly rely on the raiders to establish a fair market value. unfortunately for the jets this is exactly what revis and his agent are looking for. revis is a STAR! and deserves to get paid, however breaking the bank on one player doesnt bode well for the player or the team. at the end of the day revis and all his millions wont win a superbowl all by himself. he deserves to get paid more than Nandi but look at where that contract got him,…the best player on one of the worst teams in football.
i hope the jets do revis right and dont lowball him, but if mangold, harris, and d’brick need some of that dough too.

You are right no one man is bigger than the team, and 15mil for a CB is high. We can’t trade him though, whether you guys like it or not. Revis gave up only 4yds per pass play last year, and that was IF the opposing WR even CAUGHT the ball. The next closest CB was a little or double that amount. Whether any of us like it or not, to get to the super-bowl we have to have him. We are a ground and pound team, in a league of elite passing teams. To get to the big one for at least the next 5 or 6 years, we will have to get past these teams….Colts,Pats, Steelers (with big ben), Chargers, Bengals(maybe, Ravens, and that is just the AFC, there are several more teams in the NFC that we may have to face in the superbowl with elite/great passing games. Cowboys, Eagles, Saints, to name a few. And you guys are telling me you not only don’t want to give the BEST CB in the game, maybe the best since Primetime, his money? Am I missing something? Do you not want the Jets to win the superbowl? Revis not only shuts down ALL ELITE WR’s, he can teach Cro, and wilson. Pay the man……

I agree we still need to pay our core players, but no way in hell do you give up Darrelle Revis, for anything. What would you trade him for? Cause as far as I am concerned, we will be the losers in that hypothetical trade any way you look at it. If he can stop Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, etc. from getting the ball to their #1 guy, how do u replace that?

by Revis24 on May 16, 2010 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, Revis can stop the #1 receiver...

…but what happens when you can’t pay anyone else? Who is going to be defending the other players?

by Richard Hill on May 17, 2010 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to mention he can show Cromartie, and Wilson how to work. Glad to see we are of like mind SC

This is just typical Jets people getting nervous in knee-jerk reactions when this kind of stuff gets thrown around. It’s how negotiations work.

Let it play out

He is definitely not worth $15 mil, however he ain’t far off. Let the negotiations play out.

by Phrenitis on May 16, 2010 11:52 PM EDT reply actions

I personally dont have a problem with $15M either. $20M is a bit steep though

Ive seen this in my nightmares. We dont pay him the money, he leaves, goes to either NE or MIA, and that is the beginning of bad things to come.

Its like a nuclear weapon. You have to retain it so it can be in no one else’s hands.

Plus he is amazing and the perfect cornerstone for Rex’s defense. We’ve talked about how much flexibility a shutdown corner gives defenses. Allows you to employ exotic blitzes… stack the box… etc. WE NEED HIM!!

No need to have nightmares

we control Revis’ rights contractually for the next 3 years. Remember he signed a 6 yr rookie contract.

Put as much into incentives as they'll accept

which is what we should do every season.

I’d say don’t be doormats, but get it ironed out by the regular season. The man commands an amazing salary even as far as football is concerned, but I would want to see another consecutive year of shutdown performance before I offered anybody in the world anything near 20 million a year.

I don’t think anybody pays it out of fear of the cap returning and being stuck.

by Bro Namath on May 17, 2010 1:43 AM EDT reply actions

No, just the opposite...

don’t get the contract done before the season and find out what they have in Cromartie and Wilson.

Pay the man!! But not too crazy. We still have ppl tp pay.

Darelle Revis is the reason I went to the Meadowlands, in the cold, and spent 10 dollars on drinks and 6 dollars for every hot dog. He was the reason I had no problem paying 12 bucks to park my car.

Why do I spend about 200 bucks every time I go to a football game?

I do it to see players like Darelle Revis. Darelle Revis is the reason I go to Jets games and he is the reason I enjoy myself.

Pay the man, end of story.

That is so funny...

you pay $200 at a game and feel entitled to tell Jets’ Mgmt to pay a player $20 f*****g million a year.

I’m one of about 60,000 people who does that. Per game. And my tickets are cheap. When they’re away, I’m watching them on TV. And I’m one of about 5 million people doing that.

It is the fans that provides the NFL with an income. My individual voice means nothing. But what’s the point of going to the games if they aren’t going to keep the best players?

Wait to sign Revis? That is so funny. Are you really Tony Sparano in disguise?

Business aside, you make exceptions for the best CB in the game.

Here were the highest-paid players in 2009, based on yearly average:
DE Julius Peppers, Panthers — $16.7 million
QB Carson Palmer, Bengals — $16.2 million
QB Eli Manning, Giants — $15.3 million
CB Nnamdi Asomugha, Raiders — $15.2 million
QB Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers — $14.7 million
QB Peyton Manning, Colts — $14.0 million

- this is from cimini’s blog on espnnewyork.com.

tell me revis should get paid more than the best QBs in the NFL.

i could care less if these guys didnt even have names .i pull for the colors

by Troy O on May 17, 2010 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

not saying that i would ever want to trade revis, but if i had to put a price on it…starting price would being at three #1 draft picks.

by servantofchrist on May 17, 2010 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

I would want all of thats teams draft picks for the next three years.

by Bob_The_Friendly_Baker on May 17, 2010 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he deserves more money than all those names except Peyton Manning. And I’m sure you would agree. But that’s irrelevant.

I get your point. But here’s my point:

Keep him happy. Keep him a Jet. We all know he won’t get the 20 mil. And I think one of the reasons the NFL is the best league out there is because the owners/GMs are smart about contracts. Otherwise, this would be the NBA.

But we all know he’s worthy of a huge pay raise. He deserves it. And we, as fans, deserve to see him happy and playing to the best of his abilities. We don’t want him changing. We want him to be the productive, shut down CB that will confidently and effectively cover brandon marshall, randy moss, steve smith, superman, batman, and whoever else the other team has.

Make it happen!
