Why Do You Like the Jets?
Hey there Jets fans, I've been a part of GGN for months now, and I've noticed that our members are from all over the world. I've always been curious as to how everyone here became a fan of the Jets. So this thread is for Gang Green Nation to get to know each other. I think this is a good time for it since the news is pretty slow lately.
Some of us here are apparently old enough to have seen our one and only Super Bowl. Some probably got curious when we signed Brett Favre he who must not be named. Some noticed the brashness of our head coach. Some were impressed with our playoff run. And some have followed their favorite players whom we recently drafted.
And by the way, if you so happen to not like the Jets, then this is clearly not the thread for you. Your trolling comments will probably just come off sad and pathetic, so please find another blog to vent on. This is, after all, a site for New York Jets fans.
So we hope everyone joins in and share with us how you've become attached to the New York Jets. I hope each and every member can say a little something in the comments section. And if you haven't signed up to SB Nation and GGN yet, then this is the perfect time to do it.

im not a jets fan, actually, quite the opposite
but i have always wondered
you guys have two teams in your city, so do you cheer for the jets and the giants evenly
or do you even care for the giants? do you HATE the giants?
what im asking is, hows the relationship between giant and jet fans, and how many of you guys are fans of both teams?

we dnt hate them
i route for the giants, but not as much as the Jets, I like the team, but I would not give up watching porn for them, unlike the Jets, id give up masturbating
I liked the Giants as my second team for years. I was rooting for them in the 2000 Super Bowl.
In 2005, there was that summer camp altercation between Jonathan Vilma and Jeremy Shockey, and I just slowly started disliking the G-Men.
In 2007, after Tiki Barber had retired and with Shockey sidelined, I found myself rooting for the Giants in the playoffs. And now I like them again.

Nah, I’m pretty sure I hate the Giants. A lot, actually.
In a way I kind of hate every team that isn’t us, you know? But I really hate the Giants for the way they constantly put us down, pretending they own the city, as though our very existence serves only to validate their superiority.
Then again, they beat the Pats. So thumbs up!

Yeah, hopefully we can win a Super Bowl and change that.

Used to not hate the Giants but now...
Growing up everyone in my family and friends were always Giants fans, I was a real young when the Giants beat the Bills in the superbowl. I remember how happy everyone was at the superbowl party, from then on though I decided I would always route for the underdog and always went against the grain.
I used to be happy for the Giants success, especially when the won against the Pats. But this year the hatred for my Team the J-E-T-S, has been insane. The family I was cheering at happy with when the Giants won, now is just trying to find ways to downplay how great our team is right now.
So now I hate the Giants with a passion, and of course I find every inch I can to make fun of their organization. The whole issue with Lawrence Taylor. Drafting all those lineman, any little thing to show we have taken over the city.

i am from vegas, but was raised in New York and went with my father to every home game for 13 years
Generally in New York, you love one team and absolutely hate the other, that’s the case with me and every other new yorker I know.
Personally;
Love: JETS, METS, RANGERS
HATE: giants, yankees, islanders
that’s the way it is, i will only support one of those other three teams if they are playing division teams or teams that are in my teams’ way
Since the Jets used to play in Shea stadium, the home of the Mets, many Jets fans are also Mets fans. The Giants used to play in Yankee stadium so many Giants fans are Yankee fans. So not only do you have one crosstown rivalry you have it squared. The Yankees and Giants are both old school teams with a history of success while the Mets and Jets are the new kids on the block that have had Very few successes. Even when they won they were upstart underdog, ((except 86 when any Yankee fan will say the Mets won without class). If the Yankees/Giants are Park Avenue/High society, the Mets/Jets are The suburbs and lunch pailers. While they are the big brothers who can’t do wrong, we are the little annoying brothers who can never get it quite right. AND their fans never forget to tell us about it! Like any other Big brother/ little brother relationship, they’re spoiled because they came first and dismiss whatever we do and we can’t wait to say “hey were better than you now!” Unfortunately we rarely get to say it. But Now Rex has made us THE TEAM!

Giants/Yankees fans tell Jets/Mets fans that they are classless.. I think the Jets/Mets fans are a little more blue collar and therefore while I might root for the Giants if they are playing against the Pats like in the SB a few years back, my disdain for the Giants really is with their “privledged” fans who never cease to remind us that our team came second and therefore will always be an alsorans in NYC.
My dad grew up in queens so he was a Jets/Mets fan and so were all my uncles, and so that is how I was raised. My family lives in Charlotte now, but my kids will still be raised Jets fans, and maybe Panthers as a distant #2.

It has gotten to the point though, however
That there is a big mixing of the teams. You’ll find Giants/Mets fans and Jets/Yankee fans now much more than in the past. In fact, most of my friends are Giants/Mets fans.

Met-Jet fan It was like Johnny Cash’s song “A boy named Sue” growing up in an area of extreme Yankee and Giant fans where it was toughen up or be beaten up.I remember going to Downing Stadium with my dad in the early 60’s and had great season tickets for the Jets from 1982-2009.Psl’s have ended a long family tradition and I believe they only have 5 Sunday home ames in 2010g

Screw the Giants.
Go Eagles. :) Kelly green ftw!
can't hate on the giants
Big time Jets fan here..since the days of Ken O’Brien, Freeman McNeil, etc. giants fans are okay.. I actually watch and root for the g-men. But I bleed Jets green.
I get along with most giants fans.. yankee fans are a different story completely. Can’t stand em.
Complicated
It’s a mix. I know people who root for more teams, but one much more than the other. Usually say they root for the “New York” teams.
There’s a small but vocal minority who hate the others. As a Giants fan, I’d say we have more fans like this than Jets fans, mainly because of history and the fact the Jets have been pretty bad for years.
And then there’s probably the plurality of people who the other NJ team is just like another team in the opposing Conference, no opinion of them whatsoever.

I hate the Giants but compared to Baseball and Hockey...
the rivalry is pretty mild (Basketball is probably even less). Yankee and Mets fans really hate each other, as do Islander and Ranger fans, Jets and Giants don’t seem close to those rivalries, but they certainly dont love each other. That being said if the Giants were playing the Pats or the Phins, I’d have to route for big blue
Jets fan here...
….and when I was a young kid (and therefore more thin-skinned), I used to hate the Giants because their fans used to always give me grief about the Jets. As I got older, though, my hatred for the Giants has waned. I lived in California for a few years (from Jersey originally, and live back here again), and at that time I followed both teams (although I didn’t root for the Giants, I just followed them, if that makes sense).
As I’ve gotten older, my love for the Jets remains as strong as ever, but my hatred of the Giants is basically non-existent. I still chuckle when they lose, because it’s fun to give my Giants fan friends a good-natured hard time about it, but the teams I loathe now are the ones I should – the Patriots and the Dolphins (as I’m sure you, as a Dolphins fan, can understand).

The jets have the nastiest defense in the NFL and the nastiest head coach…they got swag, and with a fresh young QB in the middle of it..u gotta love the J-E-T-S
As for me..
I was 13 in 1993 and didn’t care much about football. I was more into Michael Jordan and basketball. (I didn’t like the Knicks even though I lived in New York and then moved across the river to Jersey).
One day I was watching the news, and I saw this piece about this quarterback whose son had cystic fibrosis. My parents were getting a divorce so it was nice for me to see a dad caring about his son. That news piece touched me, and I wished that football the best.
A few nights later, there was a preseason game on TV, and I saw that guy. He happened to be QB Boomer Esiason playing for the Jets. I didn’t even know he had only joined the team that year.
So I watched and I’ve been following Gang Green since then. Little did I know what I would be in for.

fucking dad
unfortunately I inherited my loyalty for the Jets. My dad was a die hard jets fan so of course I became one too. I have spent so many years wondering when we were gonna win it all. Being that I was also born to be a Yankee fan, I expect to win. However with the Jets, I expect they will suck. Through my experience, if there is a way to lose, the Jets will find it. I hope that 2010 is not a repeat of the countless disasters I have grown to expect. We have a great team on paper, but that doesn’t mean shit. LETS GO JETS!!!
same here
inherited the green blood from dad
I feel your pain
Its funny how we inherit the loyalty to certain sports teams because of our fathers. In my case, i was born and raised in the Bronx and i’m a diehard Jets fan. I will route for the Giants also but whenever they play each other I’m pulling for my Jets every time, hands down. As for baseball, i guess i’m one of only a few Jets fans who is also a diehard Yankee fan. Many Jets fans seem to be Mets fans as well. Yet again, i dont hate the Mets but i LOVE the Yanks. Ultimately i pray for a Subway Series World Series every year and a New York Showdown in the Super Bowl every year. GO NY!!! …. this year i’ll settle for a Jets SB win!!
I have been a fan since they changed from the titans to the jets. I grew up near shea stadium, saw Namath QB the first game I went to and have bleed green ever since. Win or lose they are my team. My second dog was named boozer after Emerson Boozer. I am happy with the direction the team is headed and glad to see Rex at the helm.

My story
I was always a Jets fan growing up, but i didn’t get into really following the team until college. Where I went to school, there was a group of guys that i hung out with, and each of them had a favorite team. ( We had mostly the AFC East and NFC East covered, even including a Chiefs fan, all of which followed them since they were younger.) I was the Jets fan and i just really enjoyed watching the team evolve from Chad Pennington to Mark Sanchez. Not to mention I can run my mouth to Eagles fans and they really have no idea about the Jets. Overall its been a fun ride and i can only imagine the years to come with this great team and site. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!
J E T S JETS JETS JETS
My Dad has bleed green and white his whole life and it was only customary that i should too. I’m a Jet through thick and thin and I will always believe. The greatest franchise in the world. GO JETS!!!!!
as much as I bleed green, they are far from the best franchise in the world. Hopefully they are taking the right steps toward that throne this year

Bleeding Green and White
My great aunt is a huge Jets fan and my uncle was a Jets fan (all those years without a Super Bowl, however, made him lose faith in the team), so I kind of grew up around the New York Jets. Even my grandparents, when I was 8 years old (I’m 21 now), would get me Jets memorabilia for Christmas and my birthday, so it’s taken A LOT of “conditioning” to get me to where I am now.
Family of obnoxious Giants fans...
I became a Jets fan in the early 80’s basically just to annoy my entire family who are all Giants and Yankee fans, and have stuck with them through thick and thin….mostly thin. Proud to say both of my little ones are Jr. Jets fans though!
That’s basically my story too, but I was born in 83. My dad isn’t a diehard football fan, so he doesn’t mind as much that I am a Jets fan, but when the Giants are in the playoffs his ears perk up. The rest of my family I could care less about how they feel, and love to just be the difficult JETS fan. Lol.

I'm becoming a Jets fan
There’s several reasons for this.
I’ve always respected the Jets and have had this underlying likeness for them. When I was a kid I definitely had my favorite NFL teams and followed them intensely. Unfortunately I haven’t had a favorite NFL team in several years. I guess I consider myself a free agent fan, haha. In recent years the Jets have been one of my teams. I’m hoping to move my family to the east coast within a few years and the thought of being a local Jets fan is very exciting to me.
I like the off-season moves the Jets have made and of course they drafted Kyle Wilson so in my eyes the Jets have basically catapulted to the top of my list of favorite teams to watch and follow.
I don’t want to be a bandwagoner. I’d rather find a team I can invest my love of football into full time. The Jets are definitely are at the top!
"Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with nail polish."
Family of obnoxious Giant's fans
As for me I was around 8 and saw the Monday night Miracle, since then I have loved the Jets and hated the phins.
Father and Grandfather are Jets Fans
My grandfather (may he rest in peace) was a Jets fan who bought season tickets every year throughout the 90s. My dad has been a Jets fan since the late 80s. I didn’t start following football until I saw Superbowl 42, and was on the Giants bandwagon for a while, but I still felt that the Jets were the team that deserved my respect. When the Jets fired Mangini I was only slightly disappointed, and when they got Rex Ryan as the new Head Coach I was skeptical, but when they traded up for Mark Sanchez I said “This is a team that has direction” AND I’VE BEEN BLEEDING GREEN EVER SINCE.
I came to this country in October '81 and all I knew was soccer.
One day in November I was being shown Wall Street by my family and went to the New York Stock Exchange. On that day, Klecko, Lyons, Salaam and Gastineau were there to ring the ceremonial bell and I got a chance to meet them. I started following them and fell in love with Richard Todd to Wesley Walker in the passing game and Freeman McNeil running the ball. The following year I fell out of love with Todd when he threw those picks to Duhe and the Phins in the playoffs. Oh! by the way, that also cemented my hatred for the Dolls that year…
why I'm a Jets fan
been one since I was a kid. My first, and now only sport that I loved forever was football, and I wanted to be Don Maynard. So I became the kid with the best hands on the block, but sadly, didn’t have ole #13’s speed. So started throwin’ the ball, getting a pretty good arm, could chuck it about 50 yards downfield and get it into the tire, too (at least, most of the time…).
Then it was just a matter of loyalty, more a reflection on my character as much as loving the team. Steadfast to the last, bleed green, die a Jets fan.
Aside from my family, there’s only two things that make me smile like a kid again whenever I do them; drive my Saab convertible with the top down, and watch/read/talk/eat/think Jets.
So now, I’m livin and lovin’ it. I was a defense guy always, have loved the attacking defenses like the Bucs under Dungy, the Ravens under Rex; the kind of defenses that inspire groans from opposing coordinators, turn QB’s into zombies and occasionally lets you watch Jenx swat 300 pound center aside like a box of corn flakes. In Rex I Trust! The man is larger than life, the players absolutely LOVE to give their hearts for this guy. I wish I could play, I would knock the snot out of anybody for that guy!
The best part for me right now, the defense. I really think we’re on the verge of becoming dominant (and Tanny absolutely better put on some of those magic moves he’s known for next year to get quality D-line & LB’s).
Why defense and not the Ring? Because much as I would love to see the team get a ring, it’s knowing that my defense can crush your team that does it for me.
here’s a question for you guys – can you clearly remember who the past 10 superbowl winners were? Now, can you tell me who the dominant defenses of the past 10 years were?
See what I mean? The ring has become a circus, a show, an afterthought. But EVERBODY remembers Warren Sapp and the Bucs (and how we picked Brady over him. Ugghhh!).
Anyways, green’n’white forever guys… love my team I do…

Well, it's my mom's fault...
And here’s the reason: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qf3oOQq9KFU
I was born and raised in Nevada, as was my mother and her parents and their parents. There are no pro teams here and I don’t even have a grandparent from a city with one. My mom loved Joe Namath, but not because of the Superbowl win, but because of that commercial. So, that’s who she cheered for.
I tended to side with my mom on pro teams, so I took the Jets. If I had sided with my dad, I would have been a Raider’s fan. Being born in Reno, they were the closet team geologically and my dad loved Madden.
lol i love underdogs im a jets mets and knicks fan my family always picked da dominant ones yankee giants not so much the nets but ya got it lol but my story really was my gf (she was a fins fan but forced her to come to the light lol) i never even know what football was about till she told me how to play it so my first game that i saw was against the hated fins and after that the rest was history btw i got a jr jet fan too :)
hey guys u think if Atogwe isnt signed by june 1st and becomes a free agent we would sign him? (not likely but just want to hear what all ya think) :)
I was hoping the same thing that we would get Atougwe, but I have a feeling it would be too expensive in the long run. I really like Brodney Poole though.

I became a fan mainly because the team named sounded cool. Jets are f’ing awesome. Who can top the Jets?? There wasn’t too much to root for while I was growing up (I only really started paying attention in the 90s) though, so I also liked the Niners (Bay Area) and the Chargers (mainly Natrone Means and his awesome visor). Although I’m still somewhat a fan of those teams, the Jets are the only ones that I’ll call MY team.
Thaksgiving
I am from Puerto Rico and in those times it was imposible to watch football games except on thanksgiving day were I was able to see the games ,Imagine I like this weird sport using helmets and pads and I had to wait a hole year to watch some games. I became a Jets fan because I they usually appear on a couple of thanksgiving along with the Raiders, Dolphins, Steelers, Eagles and Chargers. I love the logos of all those teams but I knew that I need it to pick one. I love the Dolphins because of the colors and Dan Marino, and the Chargers because of the logo, The Raider looks killer but when I saw these guys with mojacs (the sack exchange)I fell in love with the jets mostly because they were from NY and I was a Yankee fan and a Reggi Jackson fan. I am glad that I chose this team because is the only team that I am faitfull.
not a jets fan
hate them in fact. but i do like to frequent all the AFC East blogs to see whats up. I became a Dolphin fan through just my father. But by the same token i became a Yankee fan as well through him(weird).

My dad is a huge Jets fan.
I started watching them when I was old enough to understand what was going on. So, I was a fan when I was pretty young, but I didn’t become a serious fan until a few years ago. I’m not sure if there was another reason they are my favorite NFL team, so I’m going to assume it was due to my father’s direction.
Darrelle Revis once won a game of Connect Four in three moves.
I inherited them from my dad like a lot of you here
I’ve been watching football for as long as I can remember, but for as long as my dad has been a Jets fan, he wasn’t really too into football in the early 90s. So back then, while my favorite team was the Jets, I didn’t really watch them and mostly I really just had favorite players that I loved to watch, i.e. Barry Sanders (easily by far my favorite player ever still), Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, Reggie White, Derrick Thomas, etc.
Also, I used to play a TON of Tecmo Super Bowl (still do), so although I don’t really remember watching them play, I loved guys like David Fulcher, Wayne Haddix, LT, BO KNOWS, THE NIGERIAN NIGHTMARE, QB EAGLES oh man I want to play now LOL too bad I’m at work :(
Anyhow I actually for real became a Jets fan basically when my dad got excited because of us signing Bill Parcells as our HC. That 1997 season was pretty much the first one I remember watching every single Jets game. The last game of the season was really weird for me because I was rooting so hard for Barry to break 2000 yards but also wanting us to win and make the playoffs. At least one of those came true, right!
I can't really give a reason
I picked the Jets over the Giants, the Mets over the Yanks, the Islanders over the Rangers, and the Knicks over the Nets. I root for the other team if my team is out of the playoffs, except the Yankees.
I think I hate their fans more than I hate the team. I love that the Yankees made history by choking that three games to none lead and losing to the Red Sox’s, of course it was bittersweet, I hate all Boston teams. Oh yeah, the Jets, I believe I became a fan because they used to play at Shea stadium. As a Met fan, i believe the Jets (which rhymes with Mets) were their football brethren.
Several reasons why I like the Jets….1. My step father wasa huge Jets fan, I remember when the Jets lost to the dol-phags in the playoffs 84-85, he was so pissed he came home and punched and broke the fishtank, lol. Not a smart move I agree but he was that much of a fan or was he just high on something I dont know. 2. I always root for the underdog and in NY the Jets WERE the 2nd team as are the mets and nets, the Giants were always the toast of the town and I hated them then and I hate them now. Giants fans are not Jets fans, so I am no Giants fan. #. When I was young, the Jets has the NY Sack Exchange and I always loved Defense so it was easy for me to become a Jets fan. Its been difficult to be a Jets fan, but I even it out by being a Yankee fan. As I tell my wife, it will be that much better WHEN we win the big one THIS YEAR.
J E T S!
Bingo!
I’m a Yankees, Jets and Knicks fan and when I was a kid I hated the Giants and Mets, Nets were never good enough to hate, lol. But now that I’m older and mature I route for NY/NJ instead so if my teams are out I would route for a local team.
Also I became a Jets fan back in 86, they start the season 10-1 and I’m thinking these guys are really good; O’brien to Toon, Walker and Shuler. Of course they lose the last 5 games of the season. I should have known then to expect that type of heartbreak all the time. =P
The year was 1979
I was three years old. My mother took my brother and i to K-mart shopping. They had a bin of PJ’s. My grabbed a pair that happened to be giants. I reached in, and pulled out the same ones. My mother told me i couldn’t get the same pair because she wouldn’t know who’s were who’s. So she grabbed a pair of the green ones. Jets PJ’s. That is how i became a Jets fan. Put on my PJ’s and root for the Jets.
From that point on, everything was Jets. Had my Jets Starter jacket and got heckeled by all my friend for wearing it. “Jets suck” was all i ever heard.
Now when my wife want’s to ask if i love her… she says… “do you love me more than you love the mets and the jets?”.
The hardest thing is…. What do i sell in order to afford superbowl tickets when the jets finally make it? There’s no way i’m not goign to be there.
By the way...
How do i feel about the Giants? FUCK THE GIANTS!!!!
Because my dad is a Giants, Yankee, Ranger, Knicks fan
I had to become a Jets, Mets, Devils Nets fan.
Get busy winning or get busy losing.
Since 1963
I was 14 and started to watch the AFL and Jets on NBC in New Jersey because it was the baby league and the underdog. I became a Jet fan. My father was a Giant fan. The AFL was radical with great uniforms like the Raiders and Chargers. The next year the Jets drafted Namath and there was no looking back. In 1974 I got season tickets in the end zone. Since then I’ve only missed 3 home games, 2 because I was in Europe. My seats are now in Sec. 134 on the aisle 10 rows above Eddie the Fireman. The games are the greatest joy in my life after wife and kids and I’ve never regretted being a Jets fan because we are unique in the NFL. God bless Joe Willie and the NYC area for that.
I’ve met two British jet fans at games. I recall one that mentioned the Gastineu roughing the passer penalty in the 1986 play-off game with the Browns. He was still disgusted. I was astounded. This guy from across an ocean was one of us. How did you Brits become Jet fans any way? I like to know that.
Why a Jets fan
Born in the Bronx, I was attending school in Western NY in 1960-61. Surrounded by Bills fans (the only pro team in Buffalo at the time) I became a Jets (Titans) fan is self-defense.
Know several Scottish fans and when they
came here they went for the Celtic soccer colors of green and white. Some great stories and am surprized how many Jet fans came along the same path and how much we all have in common.GO GREEN!!!

why a Jets fan
It was my own form of “rebellion” against my father – who is a Giants fan. (Yes, I’m clearly a bad a$$).
The Giants had just won the Super Bowl and I decided I wanted to be a Jets fan. Needless to say, he was not pleased.
My Kids
My kids peewee team had Packers colours so one of them became a Packers fan. The other, to be different started cheering for the Jets (and green was his favourite colour before this). Me, I have been and will continue to be a Steelers fan (39 years and counting) but I have come to appreciate the Jets over the last year as I follow the team for my son (the jets fan).

This may seem funny to some but Im A life long Jets fan and I was born an raised in Illinois.
I first became a Jets fan at the age of 4 in 1984. The reason why I was a Jets fan @ age 4 was because my favorite color was green. I could have ended up a packer or eagles fan im glad I didnt. I wouldnt trade being a jets fan for any team. I have stuck with the Jets threw thick an thin and always will. Go Jets……
Me
Im a massive jets fan i check this site every day. I was born and raised in Wales which if anyone didnt know is part of the UK. Im a massive NFl fan and also a massive rugby fan. When i whent on holiday a few years ago i ended uip going to a jets giants pre season game and i thought it was amazing i couldve gone down the dark side of the giants but for some reason i was drawn to the jets that day i bought a curtis martin top and havent looked back since. and im so glad ive stuck it out through the bad times because jets are making a dynasty no doubt
I got hooked on them when i was kneee high to a grasshopper
I was born in 1961, my stepdad was from westchester county he loved them and got me hooked , plus my mom went to Alabama and had a thing for Joe Willie.LOL………….They had brought us kids to see them practice at Hofstra – even met and got autographs from weeb eubanks- joe namath, eddie bell etc I do remember the Superbowl and yes the Broadway Joe stocking commercial….LMAO I was even brought to lunch at Joe’s restaurant “the bachelors three”
Even though at the time we lived in a small town called Pine Plains , which about 1 1/2 hours north east of Poughkeepsie- now after much moving in Missouri now- funny thing is I dont get into any other sports or teams- just my Jets….go figure……………………..
I have been a Jets fan...
Since the early 80’s. Since Ken Obrien went 1-15
I remember Al Toon Freeman Mcneil Wesley walker mark G and all of those guys
Ive been bleeding green my whole life. The ups and downs, however Im always excited for the next season. The 2000’s have been great to me. Winning records, 2 AFC championship games, (late 90’s) couple of playoff runs. And now more than ever im truly proud to be a jets fan and I an extremely excited for this season. Love the offseason moves (maybe not the faneca and Jones deal) however we have a young core and a great leader in Sanchez. recently engaged to a GORGEOUS 24 year old (im 33 this year) ;) and she didnt know what a 1st down was now she is suprising me w tickets to a couple games last year jets stuff all the time and she is even more excited than me (maybe its just the fact that she loves mark sanchez but WHO CARES LOL) I will forever be a JETS fan. We are winning a couple of SB rings this decade!!!!! J.E.T.S. JETS JETS JETS!!!!!!!

- Dr. Seuss (if he were a Mets fan)
Most of my friends were Jets fans growing up. They got it from their fathers. My father wasn’t really into football, he didn’t watch it on Sundays. So I sort of followed the crowd in my early years.
My love affair with the team began with Freeman McNeil because he played my position and had my number. He quickly became my favorite player. Then the ironies of all ironies happened. My mother, who worked in banking, had Free as a client. She struck up a friendship with him and mentioned to him how much of a fan I was. A couple of days later Free came back to the bank and handed my mother a pair of white Nuemann’s gloves (the ones with the sticky, tacky grip) and a hand-written note. He had swiped Al Toon’s gloves from his locker after practice and gave them to me along with a note saying I should work hard to be the best player I can and all that.
Hooked for life.
IT RUNS IN MY FAMILY
The only sporting affiliation that was bread in to me…Being from North Jersey it was all about family Sundays at my grandparents…plenty of aunts, uncles, cousins…and of course grandma feeding the whole lot for hours… remember this.. if you want to watch th game with grandpa…there were a few rules
1. Sit down
2. Shut Up
3. Do not move an inch
I found it almost as enjoyable to watch him yelling at the TV then the game…. good good times
The Jets are a part of my Family…
Loyal Fan
Hello to my JETS! family & friends!
It has been a rough road for me as a JETS fan growing up in Ohio and now living in Indiana. The funny thing is that I have always been asked this same question; how the hell did you become a stinking JETS fan?
Well long story short my best friend in high school moved from NY to Ohio back in 93-94. He was a Giants/Yankees fan so me being the competitor I am I starting routing for the JETS/METS. Well I am not much of a baseball guy so I dropped the METS but the Green & White stayed with me. I have watched the ups and downs for years and defended my beloved JETS along the way. Well after last years surprise and this years acquisitions I am hoping that my loyalty pays off. All I really want is to say that I watched my team compete for the Super Bowl Championship before I die. I will always be a JETS fan and yes I catch a lot of shit for my choice but who better to handle the doubting Thomas’s of the world than a J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS! fan?
Since a lot of people have touched on the Giants, I figure I might as well too. I don’t hate them (quite possibly a product of me never living in NY), but I do hate Eli Manning for some reason. I think it has to do with him publicly stating that he would refuse to play if drafted by the Chargers that year he came out. It’s the NFL Draft, there are no special rules. If you don’t want to abide by the rules, then don’t enter the draft and you’re free to sign with whoever you want.
I was just a young boy...
… and I knew it was time to make a choice. My family could not help me, nor my friends. I would have to leave home and search for the answer. Climb the highest mountains and cross the widest seas if necessary.
Finally, after much searching I chanced upon a wise man and asked him, “Sir, can you please help me?”
“If I can, I will”, the wise man said.
“Then tell me, which NFL team should I make my favorite? The one that I will be faithful to all my life? The one for which I will defend its honor and fight? The one for which I would even bleed?”
“Let me consult the stars”, the wise man said. “I see there is one team worthy of your faithfulness”.
“Which one”, I asked excitedly.
“You will know. It is your destiny”.
And so it was that the Jets became my team and my destiny.

A Canadian in the U.S.A.
I left from Canada in 94 to go to university in New Mexico of all places. After settling in a couple of years and making friends I got baptised into the NFL.
I needed a team to call my own, but I didn’t want to be labled a bandwagoner. I looked at the bottom of the cellar and found the lowly 96 JETS.
They had this grinder of a kid on the team, same age, same size, same look as me. Was inspired by the guy. We also picked up this sweet running back… I got my jersey that year and there’s been no turning back.
And going from worst to first in a couple of years pretty much cimented things. I still wear my old Chrebet jersey to this day.
From NY to Ohio...
Yeah I know..what a change in scenery..!!! Well I am a NY JETS fan all the way!!!! I have loved the JETS from the days of going 4-12…I wasn’t into the players names and stats back then like I am now. Playing the fantasy leagues has made me become more aware of these things and I am mad I didn’t do that years ago..Love the green and white.!! Used to try to catch them practice in Hempstead, NY when I would go and visit my friends that lived out there..The JETS always had decent players but not a tough nosed coach like Rex..! I call him T-Rex..!!! I think Rex was what they have been missing all these years…Can’t wait to see the up-coming season…I been to one JETS game when the meadowlands was up and they played the Dolphins..I have seen them twice since being in Ohio when they played the Colts in Indiana..I plan on making a trek to see one JETS game a year at a different stadium….Go JETS….!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm from Albany
when I was young I would travel downstate with a relative and his employer. Said employer shared his season passes to the meadowlands every year and whenever I could, I would go see a Jets or Giants game. While I am a big giants fan it comes nowhere near my love of the Jets. I favored them heavily on the first day. I know the Jets entire roster and question marks from season to season, something I can’t duplicate for the g-men.
I’ve never been much of a front runner. Always rooted for the underdog. I think one of the major factors is that NYJ easily captures the spirit of the working class from New York and New Jersey. That and since I’ve been a fan (I’m 24) Jets have been a team that more often than not relies on either strong defense or a balanced attack. This contributes to irrepressible excitement for me, even on the 4-12 years. Ultimately, they made me love the game itself as much as I do now. I’ll watch a Raiders Browns preseason game at this rate, I love the game that much. And I credit the Jets (and maybe Curtis Martin or Wayne Chrebet) for that.
So the answer is, part geographical location, part upbringing, part instinct, part years of following the team.
Dad was a season ticket holder...
we don’t route for any other teams the same. Born and raised in NYC, and the Giants suck, who could route for a team with such boring uniforms.
Longtime Jets Fan
When I was a kid growing up in Flushing NY, late sixtes, my older cousins would take me along to sneak into the games at Shea, Jets or Mets. The first time we got caught I thought they were going to send me to jail and I cried my ass off. Been crying for my Jets ever since. Aside from Parcells we finally got a good coach and I don’t just mean with X’s and O’s. Go Jets!!! PS Giant Fans suck because they act like their all high class snobs.
jets fan since 67
been jets fan since i was 6.saw joe namath beat baltimore.seen comercials of joe in pantyhose.LONG AGO.loved last season.and i am a south carolina redneck!
My choice
I was born in Secaucus, NJ is what I tell people who ask, its the truth. But in reality I’m a Miami son since I’ve lived in Miami almost my entire life. Yet, the Dolphins never quite did “it” for me. I remember seeing Ken O’Brien throwing to Al Toon on TV when I was first getting into football and just thinking, I like them. Been a Jets fan since which is not easy in Miami, but I’m loyal and will be until I die or there are no more Jets.
80s were the Dolphins, 90s Bills, 00 Patriots, Its the Jets decade now!
Like a lot of you guys...
…my old man was a Jets fan, and since he and I have always had a great relationship, I’ve loved Gang Green my whole life. There’s actually a picture of me taken at my baptism with a Jets doll tucked under my arm, haha.
I was six years old when the famous AJ Duhe game happened (the loss in the 1982 AFC Championship Game to the Dolphins), and I remember being crushed that my hero Richard Todd basically played like crap. I also remember the crushing loss when I was 10 years old to the Browns in the 1986 AFC Divisional round, and that dumbass roughing the passer penalty by Mark Gastineau. That was the first time I was old enough to really understand what was at stake, and I think I cried like a baby when they lost that game.
So yeah…the Jets were inherited, and I now plan on passing the misery down to my own son :)
"(BARF)" - Donovan McNabb, during his game winning drive against Virginia Tech in 1998
My choice...
Came to New York State from the UK at 10 (probably going back this summer.) Had no interest in any American sports at first, but then I tried at 14… the person who convinced me to give them a try was a Yankees and Jets fan, so I inherited those teams. However, I wasn’t a complete conformist then and still am not now, so where he was also a Knicks and Giants fan I became a Lakers and Eagles fan. Odd, I know, and also somewhat bandwagonish. However, I never got off any of those wagons, and us two at the very least try to get together every Sunday for football. My faith in the Yankees and Lakers eventually paid off, and I have faith that my determination in the Jets will be rewarded soon, since so many pieces are now in place. We took flak for being Jets fans from people we were friendly with (like our former gym teacher; Giants and Mets fan), but we’ve stuck to our guns, and I hope to get the last laugh soon, even if it is across the Atlantic. Quite dissapointing the way things ended in January but not completely unexpected, and man… tremendous potential with this squad.
My Story
I am a Long Island native, true and blue… I love living there! So my fandom comes mostly from cheering for Long Island teams – the JETS, mets, islanders, and the knicks. I lived in NYC when I was very young and have vague memories for the Lawrence Taylor days, so I always have a soft spot for the Giants, and cheer hard for them unless they play the JETS. I also think it’s fun cheering for historically bad teams… the victory is soooo much sweeter! At least I think so, since my last team to win a championship was the mets… I was only 2!
Aussie Jets fan
I’ve been following American football for about 2 years now. Jets fan since Rex Ryan became HC.
I think what helped me decide what team I was going to support was a video of Rex Ryan addressing the media. He spoke of removing the “same old Jets” tag and getting his players to “play like a Jet”.
I just dug (or digged?) what he said, so since then I’ve been a Jets fan.

Why Do I Like The Jets ?
Because i Bleed Green!
by Ghost Face Killer on May 13, 2010 11:33 AM EDT reply actions
Had a step-cousin drafted by Jets
back in the early 80’s (maybe late 70’s?) when Jets were in still in Shea Stadium I had a step-cousin that was drafted out of Ohio State named John Sullivan (WR). Went to see them play the Houston Oilers at Shea and was a fan ever since. Before that I was a Cowboys (Roger Staubach days) fan. Been bleeding Green ever since.
Jets Fan since '82
I had become a Mets fan in ‘81, as I had an older sister who was in love with the Yankees and Dave Righetti, hence I decided to root for the Mets. Since the Jets also played at Shea, I think that was all the tie in I needed. I never went to any games (my family wasn’t exactly financially well off and I grew up 60 miles North of Queens), but never missed one on TV. Scott Dierking is still my favorite Jet of all time. On a side note, I can’t stand the “long suffering Jets fan” routine that gets thrown around in the media, nor the “Jets are a second rate franchise” talking point. The team has had some bright moments over the last 28 seasons, but obviously never gotten to the big game. That said, there a lot of franchises in the league that have been much, much worse. I love the team and always will.
Strangely I got into professional sports (other than basketball) a little late. I became a Jets fan for a few reasons…It was something to have in common with my pops and the other reason was my interest in seeing Curtis Martin play (a guy who went for a crazy stretch without fumbling and became 4th in all time rushing yards). I am also a Knicks and Yankees fan primarily. Now with that said I also root for the other NY teams like the Giants and the Mets. When I talk to people about sports I always tell them I want to see all NY championship games and unfortunately the NBA is the one that makes it impossible (closest thing would be if the Knicks play a former NY state team like the Kings or the Clippers). I miss the days of having Patrick Ewing and guys like Charles Oakley on the Knicks (no Jordan in the NBA would have meant probably a couple of Knicks championships in my lifetime). Hell, I know he might not be a favorite Knick player (I know he’s not on the Knicks anymore) but a little while back Nate Robinson blocking Yao Mings shot gave me flashbacks of Charlie Ward blocking Rik Smits shot. Jets/Giants superbowl I would absolutely love (of course hoping the Jets win it all). As another guy here born and mostly raised in the Bronx my love for my NY teams became stronger after I joined the military and moved around from the DC area, to California, to South Korea, and to Germany.
First football game I remeber watching on TV
was SB III. I was nine years old. Still waiting for the sequel. As far as the Giants, I like them too, they’re my # 2 team. In the 70s the two teams combined maybe had enough NFL caliber players to stock one team. So it was kind of a shared misery. And they finally both made the playoffs again — in the same year (1981 — the Sack Exchange). It’s not at all like my baseball preferences, where my favorite team is the Mets and my second favorite is Whoever Is Playing the Yankees.

My Dad didn't know what he was doing
I’m not from New York, but my dad was a huge Yankees/Mickey Mantle fan. He made sure from day one that I too would be a Yankees fan. We used to watch games together all the time and even go to see them when they came to Baltimore (I’m from Virginia). One day we were watching sportscenter and they were talking about the Jets and I asked my father, "Are they like the Yankees of football?" Not realizing what I was asking he said "Yeah, sort of."
After that I was a Jets fan for life. That season they had Boomer Esiason at QB, Wayne Chrebet at WR, a strong tandem of Victor Green and Aaron Glenn, and a solid linebacking core lead by Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones. I also remember a young Hugh Douglas and (unfortunately) an underperforming Kyle Brady at TE.
I’ve been through the ups and downs like most of us. I’ve enjoyed some playoff successes, and many disappointing seasons. I loved Herm Edwards as a motivator, hated his clock management. I thought Chad Pennington was going to be the next Joe Montana, just to watch him turn into a glass figurine with a noodle arm. Curtis Martin is still my favorite Jet of all time. My favorite current players are Darrelle Revis, and David Harris, with Mark Sanchez quickly shooting up that list.
Ditto
I was also born into Jet green. My dad and uncle are big fans, my uncle has had season tickets for over 20 years. I live in Baltimore right now so it sucks barely getting to see all the games. I am also a Yanks fan so it’s awkward. I’ve seen the Bombers win 5 championships, but I am just dying to see Gang Green win one. I would trade four of the five World Series wins just for one Jets Super Bowl win. It’s a rough gig feeling like the Jets go out and find special ways to lose. But it looks like Sexy Rexy might be changing the ways up in East Rutherford…we can only pray…
Well I certainly wasn’t born into the Jets, in fact I doubt a single member of my immediate or extended family ever had any interest in the sport. Came about purely accidentally, was mid-late 90’s, was a young boy, wanted to be a little mischievous, so decided to stay up late one night. Was flicking past channels, and saw a sport, no idea what it was, decided to give it a go, Jets were playing, pretty much instantly knew it was the team for me. Started taping the games, keeping track, over a decade later and still going strong. Wavered a little bit in my mid teens, but then suffered a bad football (soccer) injury, so needed a winter sport to play, went for a try out with the city team, and played for a few years which invigorated the support again. Not very interesting, but there we go.

I've been a Cowboys fan for longer
But the Jets will always be more personal to me since I’ve actually been to their games _
Before you ask why I'm a fan of both the Cowboys and Jets, I'll just say the answer is complicated and that it just turned out that way.
That underscore was supposed to be a smiley.

Originally I liked the Jets only because my Dad did,
But when I started watching the Jets, I started watching football all-together. I realized there were teams like the Lions, that have no hope, the Pats, that everyone just loves to hate, and the Cowboys, that are hyped up a lot. I had also grown up a Met fan, so I grew up assuming the worst for the team, and anything better than that came as a pleasant surprise, unlike those stuck up yankee fans. I felt like the Jets were very much like the Mets. They had their bright moments, their inconsistencies that made watching the games really fun. I rooted for the Giants in the Giants v. Pats superbowl, but only because of my burning passion for the Pats. Now i follow the Jets, on my own, religiously, and I feel like they have built a team that can definitely win in entertaining fashion.
