Gang Green Nation Community Mock Draft Pick #29
You have spoken. 43% of you have decided the Jets should pick Jared Odrick. While not a clear majority, Odrick received substantially more than second place finisher Golden Tate, who registered 23%.
My reaction:
It's tough to argue with this pick. Odrick could have a chance to start right away whether the team resigns Marques Douglas or not. Mike Devito is currently the only guy under 30 on the defensive line rotation so it would be a good move to get younger up front. Beyond that, Odrick should develop into an excellent starter on the line. He can succeed as a 3-4 end or a 4-3 tackle. That's a good thing on account of how the Jets mix up their fronts.
I won't lie. I'm always partial to pass rushers so I probably would have gone with Jerry Hughes. He is going to be a major impact player. The Jets can play Sione Pouha at tackle and move Kris Jenkins to end in 2010. Even so, I'll hardly be upset if the team picks Odrick.

Agree on the part about mixing up fronts
A strong point on the Jets’ defense is its capacity for misdirection. You literally don’t know what kind of defense you’re facing because everyone slides into position at the last moment. The more players you have that can play more than one position, the more you reinforce this. Personally I voted for Hughes, but Odrick sounds like a good fit as well.
Officially contributing to worldwide confusion since 1997
Hughes is a sexier pick but also more of a gamble. You can’t go wrong with Odrick at #29. I hope we get a chance to snag this kid. Tate is a pick I could not understand. This is hardly a passing offense to begin with, and we already have a solid #1 and #2 receiver with Edwards and Cotchery. The Clown needs more looks, and Woodhead and Washington can catch out of the backfield, but will have to make room for Tomlinson because swings and screens are probably going to account for most of his production at this point in his career. Then you have Keller of course who’s a pass catching TE. People seem to be under the impression that we are a slot receiver away from Sanchez throwing for 40 TD’s. We aren’t the Patriots. Let’s stick to the identity that Rex Ryan has created; playing smashmouth ball control and lights out defense.

Odrick is a nice player, but unfortunately the potential for a DE in our system to have an impact on a game is minimal. I think players could be had later on who, although they’re not as good as Odrick, will have a similar effect on a game (i.e. take on blocks and try to collapse the pocket).
However, guys like Hughes and Worilds have the ability to climb on QB’s on every single passing play if not specifically accounted for. That type of pressure is devastating for opposing offenses. This type of potential impact on a game is too much to pass on in favor of a space-eater. If Odrick was regarded as having that type of ability he would be in the Suh/McCoy comparison conversation.
I agree, but...
whats your feelings if we do sign Taylor, I think that makes OLB a very low priority, but I also still think it too early to go DE. Besides Iupati, who I think is the best pick for us regardless, where do you think we should go in that scenario.
Wow thats tough. Obviously a lot depends on who’s there to be had. But if Iupati slips that far and we do sign Taylor, I think we’re almost forced to grab Iupati there. If Iupati isn’t there but Cody is, same thing, almost forced to grab him. But if neither of those building block-types are there, Hughes is my guy even if we sign Taylor. We can always cut/trade Bryan Thomas if we have to make room. If no Hughes, then its the best player available for me. But I like to reach for guys with the highest ceiling in the first round.
100% the right pick
He makes everyone around him better doing the things he does, pass rushers are hit and miss, but a guy who can eat space, occupy and allow his linebackers to go to work is a must ina 3-4. We are ancient on the line, and we are thin with injury concerns. This makes complete sense and I commend everyone who voted Odrick, not the sexy pick, but you guys understood the importance of bringing in a player like this man.

Odrick or Griffen
Can someone tell me the difference between these 2? To me they seem like very similiar players, and I would hate to get the wrong one.

Very different players...
First position, Odrick played the three tackle in college, many think he can (and if selected by us must) move over to end in the 3-4, where his size is a good match (even though his power and technique may not be). Griffen played DE in college, but many think despite his size, that he should move to OLB in the 3-4, because his particular skills fills the role better (many compare him to Vernon Gholston, physically).
Also as far as college career and character goes they are very different Odrick was very consistent, and aside from injury, and the position change, should be a very safe pick, he is also someone that will be able to play every down (at least one would hope, I have my doubts with him at DE), and has unquestionable commitment and character. Griffen was very inconstant in college, he lost his starting job to Clay Matthews at one point, and was used solely as a pass rush specialist early on by USC. there are some questions about his character and commitment, but physically has a much bigger upside than Odrick.
Wow clearly Odrick is the better choice, I have just been hopoing Cody falls to us so much I havnt been thinking about anyone else. Also was thinking about Aloalu (if thats how her spells it.) is he a good prospect.

Sione Pouha at tackle and move Kris Jenkins to end in 2010?
Pouha played good in Jenkins absence, but I don’t agree putting the man mountain at end. The jets were week up the middle against the run. We need Jenkins in that middle. Also even in a 3-4 the DE has to be athletic and have great lateral movement. I give Jenkins the athletic part but not the lateral movement part.
While I think this is the smarter pick I really wonder If Rex is thinking along the same lines. I don’t know if the Jets will draft defense with their first pick. Does anybody else get the feeling that Rex likes to build his defense threw trades and free agency? They didn’t pick one defensive player in last years draft and brought in at least 8 major starters on the defense from offseason pickups in the last 2 seasons.

He brought in mostly HIS guys from Baltimore last year though. He was really high on Cromartie when he came out in the draft, so he’s familiar with his abilities and his brother likely gave him the scoop on Pool. This year it might be a different story. I would imagine he would like to be in on building his own thing.
Yeah thats just my point. I seems like he would rather build his defense from proven talent. In his first year as head coach he decided to build the offense threw the draft and they hit on a franchise QB and and one of the most promising rookie RB in the league. It has to be taken into consideration.
And don’t forget about Shepard. He was another big FA signing for the defense.

I think if he is smart he will draft D early. the only player available on offense that they can be thinking about at 29 is Golden Tate. I like the guy, but I think other slot wr will be available at the bottom of the draft. Maybe he could be a great #2 guy, but we would probably draft him with the slot in mind, but I really like Shipley in the later rounds. Maybe a big bruiser back in the 4th would be nice too.

I think they go Iupati if he's there no matter what, other than that I see them going Thomas over Tate if they go O
I agree. If Lupati is there the Jets will pick him up as boring as it sounds. I think the strongest part of this team is one injury away from being a liability. Lupati can play all over the line. Shipley’s is a great 2nd round pick but his draft stock is increasing on alot of boards. Some guys like Mcshay are showing a low need at WR in the early rounds while others are saying that Shipley’s ability and comparatives to Welker will get him picked b4 the Jets will have a chance with their 2nd. So if the Jets want to give Sanchez a respectable weapon they may have to go with Tate. Either way I betting on the O getting the 1st Jets pick in the draft.
