If I Had a Million Dollars...
Bob Glauber has the details on Jay Feely's contract with the Cardinals.
Jay Feely contract with Cardinals is 2-year, $4.8 million deal, incl. 1st-year salary of $1 million.
That means the Jets can sign an unrestricted free agent from another team for a first year salary of $1 million or less. It probably wouldn't be an impact player. Perhaps it could be for someone to add depth on one of the lines or a situational pass rusher. The team could also use it on a replacement for Feely. I'm still thinking Nick Folk is a smokescreen to give the team leverage negotiating with other kickers.
How do you think the Jets should spend the money?

Would have to have a real look for who is available, but can’t see it being anymore than depth, if it’s not at the kicker position.
I wonder if we will end up bringing Marques Douglas back after all this.

Seems like a poison pill, to have it backloaded so heavily. Maybe the Jets can dispute it and be held to higher value as far as FA signings go.
There’s no way that would stick.

I don’t know. There does seem to be some unfairness involved. Its kind of wierd to have it so heavily back-loaded, especially in an uncapped year. What would be the purpose of that? Unless they are intending to only keep Jay around for a year and then cut him, it doesn’t make much sense. There could be some gamesmanship involved to keep the Jets from having the ability to sign a FA. And it could be something that was requested by Jay himself out of bitterness.
Listened to Jay this morning on 1050, and read the interviews he gave yesterday. I don’t think there is a single bitter bone in his body about this, he understands the business aspect.

Even if any of this was provable, which it isn’t, what rule would have been violated?

There’s no rule against poison pill contracts, but the practice is frowned upon by the NFL. And its clearly unfair for the Jets, who opted not to match a $4.8M contract, to be limited to spending only $1M on a prospective FA. Basically 80% of Feely’s contract will be paid in year 2. Its very unfair for the Jets.
The contracts the Cardinals have been making this year have all been similar to this with the pay lowest in the first year and progressively rising year to year. Other teams do it the same way. It’s not unusual. Feely was an unrestricted free agent so there is no issue with matching the contract. The Jets couldn’t prevent him from signing anywhere, even if it was for free. With as upset as many are over here I am glad the Cards signed Feely instead of Rackers. I hope you don’t get stuck with Folk.
Now, I don’t know what kickers average in this league, but it looks like the Cards got an unbelievably fantastic deal on the first year for Feely.
I think he got a $500k signing bonus also, so he’s essentially making as much this year as he did last year.
…and here’s Jay on the radio discussing his move. It was purely financial for him and for the team. It really feels like such a minuscule number, but I guess it will all add up somewhere.
I heard that Rackers could go to the Jets
Would you guys want him?
