Shawne Merriman highlights (via chargersboltz)
Seems like the Bolts are looking to unload the once-dynamic linebacker, but he seems reluctant to sign his tender at the moment (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Chargers-consider-dimming-the-lights-out-on-Shaw?urn=nfl,236980). Perhaps if the Jets came knocking he might change his tune.
Last season was Merriman's worst in his short career so far. The year prior to that, he blew out his knee and missed the entire season. The popular consensous is that it usually takes 2 years to recover from such an injury. It seems like he would be ready to be more like his former self. With Merriman being only 26, it seems that there might be a good chance he can regain his prior form and once again become an impactful player.
Here are his sack totals prior to his injury:
2007 -- 12.5 sacks
2006 -- 17 sacks [in only 12 games; also had 4 forced fumbles, 8 passes defensed, and an interception]
2005(rookie) -- 10 sacks
There is no doubt that Merriman, when healthy, is as dynamic a player as there is. I think the Jets should pursue this trade. Who/what we offer to get him and what it would cost to sign him cannot be known by anybody but the parties involved. But I would take Lights Out on this team. I would rather have Merriman than Adalius Thomas. He could definitely take us to the next level.
