Jets Rookie Mini Camp. UDFA & Tryouts

Manish Mehta has the roster of players we can expect to see at Rookie mini camp this weekend:

Undrafted free agents:
Kevin Basped, LB, Nevada
Keith Buckman, OG, North Dakota State
Jeff Cumberland, TE, Illinois
Brian Jackson, CB, Oklahoma
Jason Lamb, DE, Baylor
Broderick Stewart, LB, Vanderbilt
Matt Stommes, OT, Minnesota
Charlie Tanner, OG, Texas
Don Warren , S, Michigan
Ernest Williams, DT, Pittsburgh

Tryout players:
Alex Brink, QB, Washington State
Marcus Burton, LB, Colorado
Mickey Dean, RB, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
Marcus Ezeff, S, California
Philip Kirkland, WR, Bethune-Cookman
Marlon Lucky, RB, Nebraska
Wesley Lyons, WR, West Virginia
Donye McCleskey, S, Indiana State
Damon McDaniel, WR, Hampton
Michael Owen, TE, Syracuse
Erik Pedersen, LB, Portland State
Mark Petro, PK, Hillsdale
Jesse Rack, TE, Buffalo
Cory Reamer, LB, Alabama
Brooks Rossman, PK, Kansas State
Brashton Satele, LB, Hawaii
Alebert Toeaina, OT, Tennessee
Simi Toeaina, NT, Oregon
Eric Ward, QB, Richmond
Anthony Wiseman, CB, Maryland

Little bit disappointed to see that we have given a try out to someone like Mickey Dean from Arkansas Pine-Bluff who had a 3.8 average and only 451 yards rushing last year, and failed to give a try out to local RB and Stony Brook's all time leading rusher Conte Cuttino who had 4.5 yards a carry and 800 yards this year, and 6.0 yards a carry and 1195 yards last year. Manish made the observation that if you discount Buffalo and Syracuse, the Jets have failed to give any local small school talent a try out this year.

Conte definitely deserved a try-out. His measurables practically warrant it. I’m excited about seeing what Basped and Cumberland can do. Hope they get a little air time on Hard Knocks.

Without doubt, his agent has called the Jets a couple of times, and Manish said that the team were aware of him, so who knows. He will get picked up somewhere for a try out.

As far as the guys that are there, obviously Warren is the guy that is probably going to get the headlines of the UDFA’s. Basped is definitely a guy I’m looking forward to hearing about, and obviously Corey Reamer. Also Ernest Williams is Mick Williams. He will be interesting to see as well.

Oh yeah. Forgot about Reamer.

Re Conte: I’m guessing there’s just no room for him with the addition of McKnight. Figure Woodhead is on the practice squad, along with Chauncey Washington. Rather give COnte a looksy over Washington though. Feel like Conte could help in the return game, at least on the coverage squads.

He did an interview tonight where he basically said that initially it will be special teams, and he has worked on it before because he realizes he has to work his way up. I would get it if it was the main camp, we do have a lot of running backs, but this is rookie mini camp, and I just don’t see the pointing giving a try out to a 450 yard runner from Arkansas Pine Bluff and not a guy like Conte. Then again even in main camp, no harm in bringing him in, starting him at the bottom of the depth chart and seeing what happens, ala Wayne Chrebet starting 11th of 11 on the depth chart and working up.

Should also say that it may be worth looking out for Brian Jackson, went over to the Oklahoma board, and there were a fair few positives from one guys report, and the sports illustrated report highlighted some great attributes.

Being a Nevada fan...

I can’t help but be happy about Basped!

I am excited to see that Reamer was coming, even if it was for a tryout, he should stick around.
Don Warren and Mark Petro should be good competition, hopefully Petro could stay and be do what he did at Hillsdale, he was very accurate even in very windy conditions, top kicker in the school’s league.
Eric Ward is very accurate and strong armed but I think he suffers from poor judgement, looks like big Ben in and off the field.
And if Jason Lamb can gain some weight he could be a nice backup.

I think Eric Ward was brought in mainly because we needed someone to throw footballs at rookie camp, as obviously non of our QB’s will be there.

warren

I thought Warren was a CB, are they moving him to safety?

by renzen on Apr 26, 2010 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

I guess that’s what the Jets listed him as, took this straight from Manish’s article.

Warren was a CB in college, but a lot of people think he could do a job at safety, personally, at least for 2010, I would keep him at CB, keep Drew Coleman as far away from the field as possible.

You don't think a decent S would be more valuable?

agreed

We have more depth at corner (now with Wilson added to the mix) than we do at safety (after Pool and Leonhard it’s Smith and Digs). I think Warren should be able to be a good 4th or 5th at the safety spot. People don’t realize that he was a lot of people’s BPA UDFA, and he got a 7.0 grade (3rd-4th round) from Mayock at NFL.com. This guy’s a steal.

No I really don’t, I think Pool/Smith/Leonard and Digs are perfect right now for the safety spot, we use a lot of corners in some sets, I don’t want Drew Coleman ever seeing the field, and right now he is 5th on the depth chart. Also Warren is a CB, he has the talent to remain their. If someone like Brian Jackson works out at corner, then by all means move Warren to safety, but right now, I’m keeping Warren as a CB

As a Syracuse fan

I’m excited to see Owen get invited. That’s how sad Syracuse football has become…I’m excited when one of their players is asked for a tryout. (hangs head in shame)

So what can you tell us about Michael Owen, what kind of guy is he?

Well...

He seemed to have good hands, no off-field issues. The only downside on him is that he’s a little injury prone. I doubt he’ll make the team, even though I’m pulling for him. He just doesn’t have the athleticism that a pass-catching TE in the NFL needs.

Jeff Cumberland

Straight up athletic specimen, but his head’s just never in the right place. Would be a nice pickup if he can get it together.

And Marlon Lucky could be a nice UDFA pickup as well. Kind of surprised to see that he didn’t get drafted.

Lucky

I take that back, sort of. Didn’t realize he was actually in last year’s draft class. Well, UDFA class.

Still, he’s caught over 70 passes in a college season before and averaged over 4.5 ypc over his college career. Good versatility, and having too much depth is never a problem at RB.
