Gholston's Contract Restructured
So a new position and a new contract for Vernon or at least a revised one anyway:
The Jets have restructured Gholston's contract, a source familiar with the situation said on Sunday. While the specific numbers weren't immediately available, the team lowered his base salary (originally $1.9 million), with a chance for him to recoup the money by reaching incentives, a source said.
It will be interesting to get the details of this restructured contract and just how much is now incentive based. It will also be interesting to see how well he performs now he has to actually produce for his money.
I like this move, Vernon obviously agreed to it, he probably had little choice but at least we will save at least a little bit of money if Gholston doesn't perform for the third year in a row.
Good move by the Jets

HE GOT ENOUGH FREE $$$$
TIME 2 RELEASE THE KRAKENNNNN……
This is a very good move by our FO…shit I think all rookie contracts should be incentive based. Stafford getting 50 mill to throw 20-25 picks is blasephmy compared to a Dru Brees contract. Make all these kids perform b4 they get paid. With that said glad they didnt cut him and hope he plays well this year. Would still like 2 bring Douglas back for depth.

The Kraken is going to have a BIG year.
I can feel it.
Its time for the mortals to pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For everyone beating up on Gholston........
here’s some perspective. He is only 23 years old, that’s right, 23. He’s still a kid and he’s been in the league for three years, probably feeling very overwhelmed by the whole experience. He’s 6’ 3" and 264 lbs, which sounds a bit light for a 34 DE. But let’s give the staff a chance, now that they’ve decided to use him at DE, to pack some 10 to 15 lbs of muscle on him. I’m not saying he’s going to turn the NFL on fire but before you kill this KID, let’s see if we can get something out of him with this change of position. DE is his natural position so I could see him doing some positive things. Sorry if I sound like an apologist here but I was just blown away when I read and article about this change and they mentioned the he’s still only 23 years old. I don’t think many people realize how young he is, I sure as heck didn’t. Man, he’s just a baby yet. He should be able to figure this out and become a productive player for us. He may not end up being Richard Seymour, which would be nice, but we don’t need him to do that. We just need him to be productive in our scheme and I think he can do it now that he’s getting a little older and, hopefully, wiser.
Has it always been a maturity issue with Gholston? Or he just didnt take to playing OLB?

i disagree
he’s more of a 3-4 olb type. so what if he has his hand on the ground or not, he’s a pass-rusher, not a run stuffer. if he plays DE, he won’t be getting any more sacks or production than if he plays OLB, he’ll just occupy blockers.
because he’s going to have a breakout year and Rex will RELEASE THE KRAKENNNNAHHHHHH
...you're a jet all the way.

NFLN Report:
NFL Network just reported that Gholston initiated talks to renegotiate his contract because he hasn’t performed up to his expectations.
I think that he’s been making some good moves to relieve some of the pressure that’s been put on him over the past couple of years. Good for the Kraken, good for the JETS.

Wow...
I dunno what to say about that. It’s really selfless to say the least. But I dunno if it shows that he’s confident he can make the money back, or if it shows that he’s expecting to suck and doesn’t wanna be hated forever or something idk
Vernon is afraid
of being released outright. That is why he wants the restructure.

23 is young. but not in football. if he planned on having a 10 year career, he is at least a third of the way through it. everyone keeps saying give him another chance, i say this is it! put up or shut up! if he doesnt produce this year cut his ass. hes earned more than enough money doing absolutely nothing,…unless you count those 12 special team tackles.
doesnt the KRAKEN DIE in the movie???

Actually Gholston is exactly 1/5 of the way through a 10 year career. He’s only been in the league 2 seasons, and he basically never saw the field for the first one of those. He actually IS pretty young even for a football player. If he actually pans out at Defensive End, he very well could see another 8-10 years in the league. Or, he could be completely out of the league in 2 more years, if he can’t make any plays at DE.
..lol
that would make him 5. check your sources, doug.

Sizewise
I think if he puts on like 10-15 lbs, he can do well, Jarvis Green was very productive for the Pats for a good amount of years, and he is 6’4’’ and like 270-275. This could be the answer, the kid is young, a TON of pressure, and now he gets it (based on the contract deal) RELEASE THE KRAKEN!! Get it done Rex
Gholston to DE
hey it works in Madden! i’ve been doing it for months now. maybe Rex was one of the cats i played online.

Time to change the name on his uniform to KRAKEN!
I hope the equipment manager puts KRAKEN on his uniform. I think Vernon Kraken has a nice ring to it. Plus, his shirt would immediately become a top seller, fans would cheer for him wildly, and every moderately good play he makes would show up on Sports Center. If Chad Johnson can do it, so can The KRAKEN.
I think any incentive laden contract is wonderful
if they deliver, they get paid the bigger money and command a higher contract.
It just makes more sense to me that way. If it were implemented heavily in all rookie contracts it might solve the ridiculous salary issues.
Wow, I didn't even know about his initiating the restructuring.......
when I posted. Good for him, I think that’s a sign of him coming of age. And yes, 23 is young in football. Think about this, after 3 or 4 years in college, a young man should be 21 or 22 years old. By that count, a 3 year vet would be 24 or 25 years old. A year or two in this league can make a big difference for a young player. Here’s an example, Miles Austin, he of the non existent career until last year. Austin’s first 2 years in the league, 18 rec. for 354 yds. and 3 tds. Last year he had 81 rec. for 1,320 yds and 11 tds. Oh, Austin also happens to be 25 years old. I’m telling you, a couple of years can make a world of difference for a young man in the NFL.
from a buckeye fan – every “workout warrior” defensive player now gets labeled as a Gholston. But, he is different because he had the college production to back it up. He beat Jake Long several times against Michigan and absolutely dominated in beast mode every game. 30 TFL, 21 sacks in 25 starts. i am still shocked that he hasnt panned out yet. he will have to go to a 4-3 team if this move doesnt work out.
