Jets Sign Donovan Warren

The biggest surprise to me was that Donovan Warren went undrafted, the cornerback from Michigan, was regarded as one of the better CB's during 2009, and 32 teams managed to pass him up , 7 times +. Well Rex Ryan wasn't going to let him get away as he scooped extreme value here, as minutes after the final selection was made, Donovan Warren made this post on his twitter account:

Naw I ain't get drafted but I'm wit the Jets. Let's get it!!

I'm waiting to see an official report, but it doesn't get much more concrete than the player himself.

Warren had 7 pass break ups and 4 interceptions in the Big 10 last year for Michigan, he also tacked on 66 tackles. Finishing his three year career with the Wolverines with 170 tackles, 16 passes broken up and 6 interceptions.

Lovin this signing. This is great.

I honestly thought that he was a 3rd round talent. Can’t believe he went undrafted. Crazy draft

Bit of a slow 40 for corner but love his tackling and ball skills. I think he’s good enough to play in the slot, where he would be great to sick on the short routes.

I think he might make a nice safety convert. His speed is less of a liability when he’s manned up on a TE or when he’s got some space to get a jump and read & react.

This is off the charts value for a UFDA.

by Crackback on Apr 24, 2010 6:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Most said (and I said when I did the report on him) that he should of stayed in college another year. He will develop, he has quicker game speed as you saw with him tracking Tate than his 40 indicates. Play inside now, but in 2 years, guys going to be regarded as one of the best UDFA we have ever signed. Guarantee it.

U did a report on him??? Awesome. On it!!!

Just read a couple scouting reports that said he would be a nice safety at the next level. We are golden.

Would just like to speak on my defense, that at the time it was generally accepted by most mockers and experts that Donovan Warren was a 2nd round prospect, and it was only post combine and pro days with the slow 40’s that his stock plummeted.

No defense needed, but I like that we ended up with both of your second rated CBs (from before and after the combine/pro days).

by random122 on Apr 24, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Sounds like you had him rated higher than Wilson back then!

by random122 on Apr 24, 2010 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

As you can see from the video above, the lasting impressive Warren left on me was from the ND game, and apart from the TD to Michael Floyd (who will be a first round receiver next year or the year after), he did a great job containing our receivers. We were dynamic through the air, and he just stayed with us the majority of the game. For that I left with a lot of respect for the guy.

There was a lot of hands he had on Tate though. Thats my only concern about him, the possible flags. But I like the guy a lot. I remember reading a ton of reports call him a shut down guy. Shut down is a nice compliment.

by Crackback on Apr 24, 2010 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Yer he is a little handsy, but he disguises them quite well by keeping his eye on the ball, and getting his body turned between the QB/WR. Like I said in the report, he was doing that because in the big 10, you get away with that. He will need to learn what is and isn’t called in the NFL.

Man Great job on Tate

Stays a bit physical but looks at the ball, which will keep him out of trouble.

He will add great depth to safety and CB

by GangGreenMag on Apr 24, 2010 6:32 PM EDT reply actions

The only thing that concerned me, and I think was the reason he didn't get drafted

was that he really likes to interfere with receivers perhaps in order to make up for his lack of speed. He’ll be washing a lot of yellow laundry in the NFL if that’s the case.

by secret defense on Apr 24, 2010 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

They will move him to safety, or nickle back. He won’t be a man coverage CB

by GangGreenMag on Apr 24, 2010 7:12 PM EDT reply actions

Wow thats a great signing, if true Dwight Lowery will probably be looking for a job soon.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

Doubt it. Rex would dress like 7 corners for some games.

by GangGreenMag on Apr 24, 2010 7:14 PM EDT reply actions

Worried about his 4.6 40

That’s not suspect, that’s conviction with a dozen witnesses and a signed confession. his speed was always suspect, but damn….4.6 for a corner coming out as a junior?

I hear you. But his game speed seems ok. Tate ran a 4.4 and didnt exactly blow him off the field.

by Crackback on Apr 24, 2010 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions

His game speed is much better, his game film said top 3 round prospect to many, his pro day and combine said wait a minute. Taking the game film over results in shorts any day.

His uncle is also Mark Carrier

Carrier steered DW away from SC because IIRC Pete Carroll didn’t give him a coaching job…

I’d love to see CB Devin Ross be given a tryout. As well as NT/DE Darryl Jackson.

by jets47 on Apr 24, 2010 7:39 PM EDT reply actions

There's also plenty of roster space for DB's

especially designated cornerbacks. I think Rex has a good mind to keep Lowery and make it a super deep secondary. If Lowery doesn’t rise above 4th on the depth chart that’s an awesome secondary.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 7:49 PM EDT reply actions

You mean above 5th, he’s lock for 4th at best with the Wilson pick.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

people said he might make a jump to safety in the NFL.
=awesomeness!

I love the open feild tackling ability this kid has.

In that instance alone does he resemble Revis. His ability to drive to the tackle get low and stick the the legs is really impressive. A great quality to have in a Saftey.

David do you think he will be a good safety at the next level?

by Lazarus187 on Apr 24, 2010 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t see any reason why not, good tackling, decent recognition, seems to be willing to be physical at the line. Definitely think he is more than capable of being a safety.

Damn. Theyre loaded. I hope i get to catch a couple of their games this year. Especially hope to see SF and Seattle and see if Mays gets exploited or decapitates every receiver and the QB for the Hawks.

by Crackback on Apr 24, 2010 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Now he is not with us, I’m interested to see how he does as well.

I think Seattle came out of this draft pretty well, I also think that Cleveland came out with a real nice draft class.

by Crackback on Apr 24, 2010 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow Blount and Dixon, no way both make the team

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 8:26 PM EDT up reply actions

They might. Put one on the practice squad and try to trade the injury-prone Gore while you can get value for him after this season. You know Singeltary would love to go to a 2-back bruising style offense and pound it with those guys if he can. I would be more than happy to scoop up either, though if they were cut. But its more likely that Blount hides away on the practice squad for a year.

by Crackback on Apr 24, 2010 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions

He would have been drafted

By the Jets had they not given up the 7th round pick to Seattle. This is one of the reasons the Jets didnt care about giving that pick away. They knew what they wanted to get with that pick and luckily for them he went undrafted but no doubt had they kept that 7th round pick they would have taken Warren

by Jets#1 on Apr 24, 2010 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

Only ran a 4.6

because against his better judgment ran the test with a hurting ankle, same sit. in the combine. Ankle is a problem as its been plaguing him for months and last I heard might require surgery.

Nate Collins

Would love to see us sign Nate Collins, DT from the University of Virginia. He was a nose tackle for Al Groh’s 3-4 defense and regardless of his failings as a college head coach, he knows how to coach defense. Collins was projected as a borderline 3/4 rounder, and could play DT or DE for us and add some much needed youth and depth to our d-line. Hoping to see an update stating he signed with the Jets any moment.

This could actually be the best value the Jets got this draft… He shoul have been gone by the 3rd. Maybe teams just forgot he was there…
