Alan Faneca's Release Official

Adam Schefter confirmed what we all knew was coming:

Filed to ESPN: Jets released Pro Bowl G Alan Faneca.

 Chris Mortensen provides some background:

Jets eat $5,25 mill in guaranteed money w Faneca; Jets eventually have to sign Cromartie & B. Edwardss or Holmes to extensions

Faneca still a punch pail guy, run blocker; has become liability in pass protection but has to be asset w Jets owing him the money

Jets have great confidence in line coach Bill Callahan & still high on their other guys

It's still somewhat puzzling. They probably won't be able to afford both Holmes and Edwards, and they aren't saving that much after factoring in the guaranteed money. I do have faith in Callahan to develop a young guy, though.

not sure what i think

the 2nd round pick looks good, but people are saying he’s a bit raw. i’m surprised they couldn’t get anything for faneca.

and that they only got a 5th for washington….

On the downside of his career and due 7.5 million and you’re surprised nobody wanted him?

Dumped Edgar Renteria and adopted Buster Posey. Biggest upgrade since George Jefferson moved up to a deluxe apartment on the east side!

Yeah this is what I thought, and it sucks, because I wish we could have packaged him and Clemens for a 7th rounder because of the money involved.

he made the probowl and is one of the few OL in the league who has name recognition. i would think a team with a weak OL might give up a late pick to plug a hole.

Cowboys let go of Flozell Adams and so far no one has signed him. Not sure what is going on but if I needed O-line help like StL or the some of the other bottom feeders I would sign guys or trade 6th and 7th rounders for a Faneca any time. I’m crushed that they let Faneca go to save just over 2 million but keep 21 million dollar guaranteed guys like Ghoston (yes i spelled it like that on purpose)

Future Salaries

I dont pay attention to NFL salaries, so I wouldnt know, but will they definately not be able to sign Holmes, Cro, Braylon, and Harris? Assuming they all have great years? Is Mangold still in there too?

If it’s uncapped henceforth, they should be able to. If the cap comes back, they could probably still finagle a way to keep them all involving a lot of guaranteed/bonus money that doesn’t impact the cap. I just really don’t understand this at all.

Okay I was down on Faneca last year but this is ridiculous

Like even if you weren’t gonna start him, you already owe him a ton of money so what the HELL. Cut him after next year! Let him be a god damned mentor to our brand new offensive lineman! I don’t understand this at all sigh

ehhh

I am not too sold on this move…Yea he struggled last year but Vlad is still a very raw talent and who knows how effective he will be if he’s placed in that starting role..At least with Faneca we know what we are getting and he can mentor the kid. Plus, if you’re gonna eat most of the salary, why not just keep him and use his veteran presence in that locker room thats now filled with a lot of different characters…this move can work out for the best obviously but it also has the chance of backfiring along with Washington’s! Still kind of upset they let go of Leon, I loved Leon!

I got four Jets bobbleheads last year...

Thomas Jones
Leon Washington
Alan Faneca
Bart Smith

All but Smith are gone in a matter of months.

Foolish

Can not understand the Faneca move. Reliable, mobile and still a All Pro. Must be something we don’t know.
Washington is still hurt, walking in water. May never be the player he was. Signed for decent money and will be lost for nothing next year anyway.
Good draft.

The money

How accurate are the reports on players salaries? Is it possible they’re saving more than we think? For example, if there’s a Pro Bowl incentive and he’s only getting there because of his name and not his play, then the team is losing out.

and the home of the... JETS!!!

I've tried to email Revis, but it just shuts down my computer.

Thats a real good point, I bet they were pissed off last season when he went to the probowl with a bad season.

Could it be about roster space

This is crazy, but maybe they just want to have speace for an extra undrafted FA or something, maybe to make sure we get another player for the DL? Idk.
