I look at Tanny's draft record and think I like his approach

We got the guys he wanted that were left as opposed to a large quantity of guys that are further down the list.

by george JETson on Apr 24, 2010 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

Bad. You started off with defense and then NOTHING. no defensive line help. Nothing. We are weaker on the lines and made bad value choices late

by jets47 on Apr 24, 2010 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

Draft was fine, i’m pissed about Faneca.

by SioneBAAOOOHA on Apr 24, 2010 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

I think Wilson was the steal of the draft...

best value, best fit, just a great pick and aside from Thomas or Berry, will have the biggest impact of any one player we could have drafted.

After that it was all about making us younger, and freeing up money for next year, not so much better, I think it was a smart draft, that addressed a lot of needs long term. But a lot depends on how McKnight, Ducasse, and Conner turn out in year two, and who we resign after this season.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

Don't really have anything to add

beyond liking the Wilson pick quite a bit. Secondary needed that reinforcement, and it’s great to have a potential future defensive stud with us.

I don’t like the second pick, and am lukewarm on the double-back signing late.

Here’s hoping we can eye us some good undrafted free agents.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

But yeah, would have liked to see a little D-line help instead of a FB.

by SioneBAAOOOHA on Apr 24, 2010 1:03 PM EDT reply actions

Agree

I could be wrong, but you can convert a D-lineman into a FB if necessary – not the other way around. Ugh!

by Mailman83 on Apr 24, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I love that Wilson dropped , no thoughts that he would, and happy he did.
I love to see Ducasse/Slauson/Hunter on the oline, what an LINE! (even without Faneca…don’t leave)
McKnight, I like instead of Leon..without reinjury risk and all.
Two USC running backs, Chauncey and McKnight…I doubt Chauncey is staying.
I like Conner pick a lot, gives Jason Davis competition and learns from the best FB.

I suppose the Jets saw something in Myron Rolle not to take him
I also was expecting Arthur Jones to land, but hopefully he’ll last.
I hope the Jets still try to get Conte Cuttino.

by Max Strauss on Apr 24, 2010 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

I’m not, especially why we took him. If we were releasing Faneca, Asamoah would have been the better pick, he’s ready to start and is a good pass blocker already. Ducasse has better potentioal overall, but it may be at tackle and should take at least another year, if we were keeping Faneca he’s the better pick, but we didn’t so he Wasn’t.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I just don't like the guy

not impressed by anything I’ve seen, guy started playing football in his junior year. He’s practically new to the game. And I’m supposed to buy that he’s NFL material, let alone Alan Faneca’s replacement?

This was the bad move of the year, if there is just one.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Hunter will replace Faneca…not Ducasse…
If Ducasse does, I’d be really impressed with Ducasse’s hard work during offseason.

by Max Strauss on Apr 24, 2010 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

No matter who plays Guard this year

Ducasse is supposed to be Faneca’s permanent replacement. Which I laugh at.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I expect Ducasse

to be a project for the next two years. Faneca will likely not be in football two years from now.

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Apr 24, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Most compelling argument yet

I like taking my advice from someone who already experience a similar loss.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I think its an open competition, but Hunter replacing Faneca scares me even more. It was no coincidence they waited to draft Ducasse before they released Faneca.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Hunter is probably going to play guard.

Ducasse/Slauson will replace woody/moore in future.

by Max Strauss on Apr 24, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn’t sold on LW coming back, didn’t like getting lit up by 2/3 receivers last year, and thought faneca would allow too many sacks and with this many offensive weapons we would be throwing more. I also thought we didn’t get to the QB enough and I have no faith in VG, (Rex is Great not God). I wanted a stud pass rusher or at least some beef up the middle, (NO sophomoric humor) but I am good. B+

by george JETson on Apr 24, 2010 1:08 PM EDT reply actions

Simply on paper I love McKnight to replace Leon (along with Wilson as the returner), I do not think he was going to be the same player, but seeing the value and players that were available at other positions when we picked him made me a little ill.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Kris Jenkins and Sioni Pouahu can split the DT time 60/40 and keep them both fresh. VG will be better as a RDE than you think because of his strength and quickness. There are differant types of 3-4 defense. Some require the DE’s and DT to hold up tackles so LB’s can make the play. Others like the Jets look for more disruption because they stack the box more. Vernon Gholston will be a lot better in a role where he can be disruptive as a quick strong DE, and not have to worry about holding up O lineman.

yea it is scarry but like they say rex tapped into vg powers and he is goin to unleash kraken

by jetgreen84 on Apr 24, 2010 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

That's what they said about Gholston

at the linebacker position last year. Anyone remember how that went?

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

True but rex must see something in him not to get rid of him

by jetgreen84 on Apr 24, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

But that was just on film, before he even got here

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

What are you talking about?

Gholston played linebacker through Pace’s suspension and situationally for the Jets last year, to outstandingly disappointing results.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

When he praised him and said he would unleash the Kraken was right when he came in, before he actually saw him play live and disappoint in game.

we all love t-rich, but he guy won’t last forever. getting someone with potential to learn from him is smart.

by JetsFan1991 on Apr 24, 2010 1:19 PM EDT reply actions

I agree but again, he might have been there in the seventh, or they could have looked to move up to the sixth for less, a lot of other quality players at other positions were still out there.

by King A! on Apr 24, 2010 1:47 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, a lot of us watched film from those games

Apart from taking up a number of blockers he did nothing to contribute to those wins. If you think he had something Pace doesn’t by all means let us know what that is.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Isn’t taking up a number of blockers all we want him to do now?

by random122 on Apr 24, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

One of a few duties at that position

if you think he can consistently do that, it’s a logical choice. IF being the operative term.

by Bro Namath on Apr 24, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

we need more than that

Ellis had six sacks, Douglas had 1.5. He has to do better than just take up blockers

by george JETson on Apr 24, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

My take..

- i love what we did in the draft
- i’m really going to miss Leon. He was a first class player and a hell of a Jet. He will be missed.
- I am not one to question Rex or Mike T, but I do not understand this Faneca thing. Wouldn’t you want a guy that has perfected the art of O-line to be able to teach and mentor this new guy so he can ultimately go in for Faneca and have an immediate impact later on, after learning and maturing on the side line.

by jetsfan29 on Apr 24, 2010 1:50 PM EDT reply actions

I find it interesting that Leon and Baker had similar contract dispute situations, it basically ended the same way with them on the same team now.

by random122 on Apr 24, 2010 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

You cut him and hope to resign him for veteran minimum in a month. If no one else signs him.

by manuvsteal on Apr 24, 2010 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm kind of pissed at our last two picks

RB’s are a dime a dozen, and the class this year isn’t that great. We could have gotten some quality players to fill some question marks in our defense like Arthur Jones, Ricky Sapp, Geno Atkins, Owusu-Ansah, Perrish Cox, etc.

by secret defense on Apr 24, 2010 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Arthur Jones is garbage, he was getting blown off the line by Division 1AA teams last year. I looked at him on youtube, it was very dissappointing. There are a good amount of free agent DT/DE still available. The best of which I think is Vince Oghabaase of Duke. He’s 6’5 300 lbs, but he’s a great athlete. He was all ACC for consecutive years on a horrible Duke team, that actually had a good defense because of him. I like Geno Atkins, but he is similar to Mike Devito, in size/strength and what he can do.

by manuvsteal on Apr 24, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

What the bleeping bleep did we do?

This is seriously ridiculously disappointing. I was feeling pretty high about draft after yesterday and today I wake up to see that Faneca’s gone for absolutely free, Leon’s gone for peanuts, we got Joe friggin McKnight to replace him—a guy who was supposed to be the next Reggie Bush and couldn’t even escape disappointment IN COLLEGE, a guy who is now expected to replace LEON FRIGGIN’ WASHINGTON and will be a disappointment if we don’t eventually see ’08 Leon out of him.

Oh and by the way, the trade for Leon (which somehow included our 7th rounder too, WTF) netted us a F***ING FULLBACK?!? ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?!? A fullback. Not to mention that at the time we drafted Joe McKnight—or John Conner (excellent name at least) for that matter!!!—we could have gotten Anthony Dixon, Jonathan Dwyer, or LeF***ingGarrette God Damned Blount.

We must have SUPREME confidence in Mike Devito and Ropati Pitotua(sp) and Jamaal Westerman not to get any DL or OLB. And I can just feel it now, LW is gonna blow up this year. And Joe McKnight is a god damned bust.

I am REALLY really unhappy right now. Total friggin waste of this draft I swear.

I like Ducasse too

I would have gone in a different direction, but I think he’s gonna be a great player in two years.

Also why the hell would it be Hunter that is taking over for Faneca instead of Slauson? I thought Slauson actually played guard in college…?

by Exystence on Apr 24, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Slauson was a guard at Nebraska, but he played all O line positions. It may just be the best player will start between Hunter, Slauson, and Ducasse. Similar to Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemmons last season.

by manuvsteal on Apr 24, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m okay with everything else but letting Faneca go. Very disappointed in breaking up the line that did so well last year, but I guess Callahan has something lined up…

If no one signs Faneca, the Jets may be able to resign him for less money. The Rams did that with Isaac Bruce and/or Tory Holt I believe.

Very similar if you look at their college careers, both very hyped coming out of HS, both didn’t live up to it, both shifty but not great straight line speed. McKnight is a few inches taller of course.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Leon = 5’8" 202 lbs
Joe = 6’ 198 lbs

He is a god damned WR masquerading as a RB. He needs to gain like 15 lbs of muscle before I trust him enough to run between the tackles ever.

by Exystence on Apr 24, 2010 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

McKnight also came out a year early, where Leon played all four.

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Whatever. I just hope he can bulk up and not get murdered if he stays at RB.

by Exystence on Apr 24, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Leon is never gonna be the same again. Have you ever had a rod in your leg, it hurts when it even gets cold outside. Leon has to play a position where he needs his legs and he had a compound fracture with a rod holding it together in 1 of them. I’m not saying he’s finished, but he’s not the same player ever again. I like him and good luck to him in Seattle. Joe Mcknight is a beast. The Jets will use him as a 3rd down back, WR, returner, and backup RB. Great pick.

by jets47 on Apr 24, 2010 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Ducasse was better than any of the guards despite the fact they had him listed as tackle. McKnight is better than Jonathan Dwyer, because he is more versatile, and Dwyer will suck as a pro, except on maybe goal line packages. In short they did get the best available players for the teams needs. The FB i don’t know about though.

by manuvsteal on Apr 24, 2010 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Mcknight doesn't have to be 08 Leon

Wilson is the punt/return guy, LT is the back up RB and the pass catcher out of the backfield. Him and green are gonna get bulk of the carries. McKight only has to be injury insurance, 5-8 carries a game and learn from LT.

by george JETson on Apr 24, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

by jets47 on Apr 24, 2010 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Your not looking at it right. Don’t look at the position, look at the player. Joe Mcknight fills about 4 needs for the Jets. He can do everything Reggie Bush does for the Saints but in round 4. You need a returner? Joe Mcknight can do it. Need a slasher, make people miss for draw and bubble screens? Joe McKnight. Need a speed receiver or a vertical threat? Joe McKnight runs a 4.4 and has great hands. Joe is not the 3rd RB. He is the athletic RB/WR/kick punt returner/3rd down elusive back. If you don’t believe me look up Joe McKnight 2009 Highlights. HE’S INSURANCE for every skill position on offense.

I need some time to marinate on this draft....

I spent alot of time checking and re-checking combine #‘s, game and highlight films and multiple scouting reports on dozens of prospects, yes I have entirely to much time on my hands, and Joe McKnight did not even show up on my radar. I just can’t get my head around the choices after the first pick. I did have Ducasse highly rated and I think he will be a fine OL for us, so I guess that was a good pick also. But I will echo the sentiments of most of you on here and say I trust Mr. T and Rex to buy the groceries and make the superbowl winning stew. J…E…T…S, JETS, JETS, JETS

Interesting picks, but I feel like our needs weren't taken care of

Wilson is a great CB, and it seems like the objective of picking him is to have 3 press corners to match 3 WR sets played by high-power passing teams.
Ducasse seemed to me like a good o-line prospect, but cutting Faneca seemed kind of premature to me.
I’m surprised no defensive linemen were picked and no safeties either. I can understand Taylor temporarily removing the need for an OLB, but I am extremely skeptical about the new Gholston experiment. Cutting TJ and Faneca and keeping Gholston just seems fundamentally wrong to me – if you want to save money, why not cut players without production first?
McKnight looks good on his highlight film in terms of the following: changing direction and breaking tackles, plus he seemed like a good receiver. Highlight films, though, are made to make players look good. As to Conner, he seems all right, and Tony will have to retire eventually.
Is an Eric Smith / Brodney Pool / James Ihedigbo platoon really the answer for the FS position?
Let’s hope the presence of a revitalized Jenkins can put some bite back into our defensive line, at least occupying blockers so Calvin Pace or Jason Taylor or Bryan Thomas can grab a sack.

Officially contributing to worldwide confusion since 1997

by Rabbit T on Apr 24, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

This was a great draft for the following reasons. Vernon Gholston was always a DE, never a LB. He is just going back to his natural position. Even if he doesn’t get sacks, the 3-4 DE needs to tie up the tackle and guard, and he is strong as hell (41 bench presses) and quick enough to do that.

Kyle Wilson lets the Jets have 3 or 4 good or better CB’s depending on how you look at it. Dwight Lowery played CB and FS in college and he got 8 INT"s or so playing safety. He may be a better bet at FS as a playmaker than any of them. Also, if Cromartie doesn’t tackle well, or stinks it up, they can go to Wilson and not miss a beat.
Last, I"m hoping they can resign Alan Faneca so Ducasse can sit for a year. Joe McKnight will run screens, draws, catch out of the backfield, return punts and kicks. You don’t need a WR to be a speed deep threat if you can split this guy out wide and use him like Reggie Bush.

by Revis Island on Apr 24, 2010 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

great draft!

Hi guys, Long time Falcon fan here.

I thought the Jets had a great draft! They traded ahead of New England often and drafted immediate impact players teh Patriots may have been targeting. Kyle Wilson is a steal as well as McKnight in the later rounds. New England was left to draft Tight Ends Gronkowski and Hernandez, who that probably wont use anyway. New England is notorious for letting quality tight ends go becasue they dont know how to use them. Graham, Fauria, Watson, amongst others.

Welker is injured, You have Revis who can cover anyone, and Holt is up there in age. Your off season aquisitions were great! picking up LT, Holmes, Cromartie, their is no doubt you have an outstanding secondary, and in my opinion, the team to beat in the AFC East.

"And their 1st pick in the 2010 NFL draft...The Atlanta Falcons select Sean Weatherspoon, LB Missouri."

Not a chance, for starters Lowery will be slower, Warren had horrible combine, pro days numbers, but if you watched him through the year he was good, I saw him when we played Michigan, and Golden Tate ran a post on him, and he tracked him 50 yards to break up the pass at the endzone.

Unless I missed his name being called, someone is going to get a steal.

No D-Line help

We’re not getting any younger there and we definitely could’ve used some depth there but given the small number of picks we had, I think we did a decent job this year. Let’s just hope Vlad and McKnight can effectively replace Faneca and Leon…

by Judgegavel on Apr 24, 2010 3:50 PM EDT reply actions

Good draft

Maybe they can resign Faneca for less than 7 mil. The Rams did that with Isaac Bruce a few years ago. D Line help is not as necessary, because they are going to play Gholston exclusively as the 3-4 RE now. A position he should have been all along. They made enough moves to be better in every area than they were last year. Lastly, Dwight Lowery can play FS and Revis, Cromartie, and Wilson can play CB. If Cromartie doesn’t tackle well, or isn’t good, they can bench him and bring in Wilson. Great job filling needs.

by manuvsteal on Apr 24, 2010 6:10 PM EDT reply actions

Great draft for the Jets

I think the Raiders had the best draft, for the first time ever. Jets did a good job. A lot of people worry about draft picks, but they don’t really matter. The Jets got 4 players, and 3 of them will play alot this year. If you don’t believe it Wilson will be the nickel back play alot. Ducasse may/may not start at LG, even if he doesn’t start, he will be the first lineman off the bench. Joe McKnight will return punts and kicks, play on 3rd down, catch the ball out of the backfield. All 3 of those guys will play this year.
The last pick is the replacement for Tony Richardson who is retiring at season’s end. Even though John “Terminator” Connor is a FB, he still had a decent YPC.

The team didn’t have many holes. So to worry about getting more draft picks for guys in the 4-7 round, those guys would be on the practice team anyway. Don’t forget, we got Braylon Edwards (Starter) for a 3rd rounder, and Santonio Holmes (slot or starter) for a 5th rounder.

For anyone counting, if you throw in trades, the Jets got 5 starting players out of a 7 round draft.
