Jets Select Kyle Wilson at 29
So much for trading up. The Jets landed a corner with top notch cover skills sitting at 29 and could have had Jerry Hughes or Sergio Kindle. They ultimately went with help in the defensive backfield over the pass rushers. The Jason Taylor signing allowed them to do it.
We will have plenty more on Wilson, but I really like the pick. He is quick and physical. He also has top notch ball skills. I think he could start right now in a man based scheme like the Jets have. He will instantly become one of the top nickels in the game.
The Jets can now man up with any three receiver set in the league with Revis, Cromartie, and Wilson. Rex can get even more aggressive with his calls. If everybody is healthy, we will never see the number two and three receivers go crazy the way they did in the AFC Championship Game.

Hard to question Rex’s decision making here, but I still would have greatly preferred Hughes.

Wilson had too much value, this D is stacked, I hope Hughes drops a lot and Mike makes a move, not happening, but you know.

Why did the Pats pick McCourtey over Wilson?
It’s got me dumbfounded, Wilson is obviously the best value. Anyways, I love our pick and hope we can make some majic happen in the second round…so much for Hughes though, he’s a Colt.
One in a long line of question marks in this first round...
some of the stupidest picks I’ve ever seen, it all greatly benefited us though.
Damn Dolphins had to pick Jared the Jet. Oh wells, we got Jason the Jet anyway.

I was so happy when they did, but...
I still thought we were getting Wilson. I was very scared with Miami and NE in front of us, but when Wilson fell it ruined that for them as neither were taking a CB.
freakin dolphins!!!!
id have preferred to take hughes, but as mentioned in the article, passing against us in gona be incredibly difficult no three step drops and shootin it down the field for a 35yd pick up. the secondary is gona open things up for the front 3 and the backers.
im holding out hope that daryl washington might be there when we pick in the 2nd, and maybe make a deal to get into the third and take blount out of oregon.
maybe safety in the fourth

This is a playoff pick...
You pick a guy like this to shut down great 3 WR sets. The Colts and Pats are toast. Im quoting Manning after the AFCC game. “My mind is just exausted from practice, from the game(with the Jets), They can cover, they can Blitz. Im just really mentally tired right now”. Really manning? Who are you gonna throw two when Wilson’s got the nickle and Cromartie’s jumpin short routes for Pick 6’s? 9 In the box bitches! Were bringin everybody!! BOOOOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!!! LOL

Im joining Gang Green!
I’m a big Boise State fan and have watched wilson for 4 great years. I didn’t have an NFL team to root for so I figure what better time? I hope he can return punts for this team and you guys will be happy with the work ethic and production he brings
Kirby Moore for Heisman
Yea thats the other big bonus...
we needed a decent punt returner, no more just watching Jim Leonhard simply field the punt safely and go no where.
Welcome aboard
Leon
You forgot about Leon Washington. If we keep him (which it looks like we will) and hes anything like his old self, hes one of THE best return men in the league
80s were the Dolphins, 90s Bills, 00 Patriots, Its the Jets decade now!
I'm joining also!
KDub is gonna rock! I can’t wait to see him in action at the next level. It will be strange, though, not to see him in Blue and Orange!

After checking him out
I have good feelings about this secondary.
Anyone else surprised Kindle didn’t go in the first round? Maybe I’m overrating him.
Pretty happy with the pick
but I have to say that I felt pretty bad when the Colts snatched up Hughes. I’m positive that Jason Taylor influenced the pick, which sucks because he’ll be gone in a year and we’re not gonna get a premium pass rusher wherever we land in the draft next year :(
By the way, thanks to D.W. for all the work he does around here. He’s five hours ahead of us across the pond, and he’s absolutely exhausted. Thanks again, David. We all appreciate it.

Totally agree! Best site for me. You do a great job of mediating while allowing fun exchanges. Thank you. As someone new to sports blogging, you make it fun.

I'm not suprised at all.......
that Kindle is dropping like a stone. I did not want him anywhere near our team. He’s soft, gets caught up in the wash, not strong enough to deal with NFL OT’s and I think he’s too lite for a 34 OLB, 250 lbs, please. To play 34 OLB you need some weight in your pants, at least 265 to 275 lbs. Let someone else running a 43 D take a chance on him and give me Brian Price or Linval Joseph with our next pick and our defense will be set until next offseason.
No needs makes any pick a good pick
No real need right now so fix the problem that lost you your last game. There is no plausible hole on this team, not even the most skeptical of skeptics would claim one. Age will only be a very slight concern next year. We have young talent across all the skill positions and linebacking core. Only the defensive line will be a concern, so at most four positions of possible need next offseason

K-Will, Great Pick
Big Fan of Wilson, He was my favorite CB in this years draft. Teams will have Nightmares passing against us, GREAT PICK!

Did I mention that its also only the first round?
This team is going to be scary. Defensive line can be addressed later as well. Fun times to be a Jets, Mariners, and Avalanche fan.

WE MISSED OUT
I would have liked the pick, had hughes not been on the board. Like our FO said, the cromartie trade allowed us to take the best player availabe. You dont spend a first round pick on a nickle back but hey thats just me. I dont like Odrick to Maimi but i like Mangold in that matchup anyway. Hughes would have blossemed in this system and JT is a stop gap at best. With that said I like many am inclined to trust Rex and the kid seems like a gamer. Expect alot of trades day 2.

I’m with you on this and obviously in the minority, but I hate this pick. We have two starting corners and just drafted a guy in round one to play on 3rd and long. The Jets should have learned from a team like the Giants who actually win Superbowls: they beat the best passing attack in NFL history by beating up their QB. Not with a bunch of first rounders in their secondary. Truth be told their DB’s sucked. Bottom line is, you can hide a bad secondary with a good pass rush, but you will not beat good QB’s if you don’t pressure them, I don’t care who your corners are.

Nickel back is basically a starting position now...
Against the Pats and Colts he will need to be on the field most of the game. Hughes or any OLB is going to be 4th on the depth chart at OLB min., and wouldn’t have played close to as many downs.
love this pick
I live in the same building as his cousin at my school. i thought for sure he was going to the texans. I was stoked when he dropped to 29 praying that the jets would grab him. he’s an amazing talent. His cousin’s happy about it too. they live in jersey so this was the perfect place for him to go.
You know what though
I think that the pass rusher class this year was a bit overrated, at least in terms of at the top of the draft. On the other hand, the CB class really does seem pretty elite overall. This is probably the year to get a developmental pass rusher as there are a ton of guys who have talent but aren’t slam dunks. Jerry Hughes was pretty much the closest to that in the draft (as far as just that skill of rushing the QB), but the way that it shaped up, we got ourselves a top-flight-“compares to Revis” CB instead of a probably-very-good-but-not-exactly-DeMarcus-Ware OLB and are in position to get Worilds or Sapp in the 2nd round. I’m really happy with our pick now :)
up the sleeve
Maybe Rex is also anticipating the Pats ploy to let the Jets fill their needs at OLB and then release adalius thomas after the draft. Wouldnt mind picking him up if that does happen.
Shit or get off the pot!
Revis and Wilson's future
Not only do I love that we got a CB, in Wilson, who has the same skill set, mentality, and intangibles as Revis, but now he has Revis himself to mentor him and show him how to fulfill his potential and become an elite CB. And now Rex can call his crazy, jail break blitzes without watching Lito Sheppard or Drew Coleman screw it up by getting burned in coverage. Lastly, now with Wilson combined with Revis and Cromartie, this opens the potential for the most unexpected blitz ever; a blindside DB blitz from Revis. You heard it here first, Revis will have a sack next season!
One of the problems with the secondary last year is that the blitzes were predictable and were getting picked up. Revis probably will get a sack next year; who else is going to rush the QB? Oh, I forgot we have 35yr old Jason Taylor! Maybe someone from our collection of starting corners can sub in for the middle-aged front seven?

Well... I like it.
The fact that this guy was in the Fiesta Bowl a few years ago is a plus for me!
Jerry Hughes was my other favorite for them to take as the draft shaped up. I’m always happy to see talent come out of non Big Six schools.
And for those complaining, the draft isn’t over yet. A lot of underestimated talent comes from the coming rounds. It’s not like Wilson is the only pick we have. I’m rooting for Toby Gerhart in the upcoming rounds. We’ll see.
i honestly didnt know what to think but i have calmed down and researched on him and i think its a good pick now and i trust in rex so now we need to see who drops but the tyson pick and tebows pick shocked me completely
man if we trade leon and thomas maube we could move up for a kindle (yeah i know wishfull thinking) but i would be very upset if we trade faneca that would be a low blow to the O-line

Shocked but it does make sense
We don’t know what Cromartie is going to do next year. This is insurance for the future if by some chance he doesn’t resign with the Jets. We had to sure up the slot receiver position and to have someone that plays man coverage and is physical enough to bump the of there route at the line of scrimmage is very key. Especially since we will be blitzing a lot. I understand that we could have taken Hughes but we can find someone else to fit. This is going to help us not get burned by low ranking WRs that were killing us last year. On top of that… we have someone who can bring back punts for us on top of being our nickel back. It killed 2 birds with one stone and it will sure us up for the future.
Full circle
Orginally, I had wanted Kyle Wilson from the beginning. I liked his style, physical play and man skills. Then when we picked up Cromartie, I shifted my focus to Jerry Hughes and was excited at the fact the Jets had a shot to grab him at 29. When they didn’t, I was a little disappointed but got excited again by the thought of how much more Rex can do with 3 SOLID corners. That, coupled with the fact of the talent left in the 2nd round, and I’m ecstatic. Now, I’m hoping to grab someone like Koa Misi or Ricky Sapp in the 2nd round. I don’t see Nate Allen or Morgan Burnett falling to us. Or even Taylor Mays at this point wouldn’t be the worst thing ever…well, maybe not the last one =p
Small breakdown
Pros: Tends to always be around the ball, good hands
4.4 speed, great initial speed
Versatile- can play nickel, corner, safety
Good tackler- won’t miss many guys
Punt Return skills
Cons: Size, small but makes up for it is strength(most cb reps at combine/ more than Gerald McCoy)
Lacks the “1-on-1 deep bloopers” endzone fades will be hard for him
I am a little biased, but watch the fiesta bowl highlights. He took Andy Dalton’s head off. Rex likes to blitz and I can’t see anything worse than Jason Taylor on one side and Kyle Wilson flying in from the nickel. Many had Kwilson as the best corner, to get him as the 4th corner taken is very good.
Kirby Moore for Heisman
The jets now legitimately have 3 cover corners. I don’t think anyone else has better corners in the league. If receivers can’t get open….the pressure will get to the qb. Also jets may feel there are no top tier corners in next draft but heavy on pass rushers. Don’t be surprised when Rex uses a 3 db set on most base defenses.
I’d love to see us trade up for kindle tonight. Or hopeful that cody or Mays falls to us. We can get away without a big time cover safety now….we need a heavy hitter. Or cody to spell Jenkins. Either way I bet we go defense with our next 2 picks and our unit is going to be scary for opposing offenses. No longer can you pass on us. By tonight you may not be able to run on us either.

I dont think next two...
I think OL depth is probably our next biggest need, not enough that we have to take one in the second, still think we go best player, but if its not an OL I deffinitly think we go that way in the 4th.
