Jets Pick in SB Nation Writers Mock
Like we've been having here, SB Nation is running a mock draft for its football writers. The Jets are up, and I picked Jerry Hughes, a defensive end who would move to outside linebacker with the Jets. The way the Draft played out, this seemed like the obvious choice. Kindle, Graham, Cody, and Odrick were all gone. Golden Tate was there, but I'll take an elite pass rusher over a slot receiver. Dez Bryant was the only receiver gone, which means other slot options will fall to later in the Draft.
No trades were allowed. If they were, I'd imagine the Jets would have tried to package their first and second round pick to move to for Dez Bryant, who slipped into the 20's. Mike Tannenbaum loves to target elite talent.
What do you think? Was this a good pick?

I would have taken him over everyone you mentioned except Kindle and Graham...
only player I rather have that was available was Iupati.
Out of what was left, you made the right call
But from past experience, DL’s don’t always make a smooth and successful transition to OLB (cough-Gholston-cough)
That’s one example. Plenty do like Ware, Suggs, and Woodley to name a few.
I don’t think Gholston would be producing even if he had stayed at end. I don’t see the position switch as the problem there.

Right, right
Yea, i made a pretty close minded statement. Also, it helps that he is coming up under Rex Ryan instead of Gholston in his rookie year coming up under Mangenius. Not sure how much of a difference that makes, but Ryan seems to be pretty good working with the defense.
Btw, I appreciate that you stay with your posts, a lot of SB Nation writers don’t respond to comments
I would actually like to see Gholston have a season as a 4-3 end, just for my own curiosity.

Same here. I really hope Gholston shows us something this year…. I really really hope so.

You see, it's not about how you won the game, it's about how you played the game.... there's a difference.
Thank you for the kind words, Vinny.
I guess it’s a force of habit. Way back when before we had such an awesome team of writers, one comment was a big deal so I’d automatically respond to try and drum up discussion. Mainly though, I just love talking and debating about the team.

I love the pick. However, I would hope that the Jets in this situation would have taken a long look at Mike Lupati. Both guards are aging and suspect in areas of their game. It would be hard for me to pass him up at this point given the teams sucess with picking Lineman in the first round. I gotta love the Possibility of a future HOF guard mentoring a guy like Lupati. Seems like a perfect fit.

Excellent pick
I would love us to get Odrick but as you mentioned he was gone. I for one, would be upset if the Jets packaged there first and second for Bryant. I think the only receiver we need now is a slot receiver. I know we have to think about the future but I’m sure someone equal or better than Bryant will be available next year. Hughes is an excellent pick. I think Rex could turn him into an unstoppable force.
If we sign Alex Brown, then we could go offense early in the draft. We could wait til next year and then take care of the D. I see the Jets going WR with their first two picks. Then maybe a RB. Yeah, two young burners and another big back or a speed back. I dont care. Bring it! We have to sweep the Pats next year and absolutely backhand the Dolphins.
