Leon Expected to Sign Tender
According to Dennis Waszak, Jr., Leon is on his way to Florham Park and will sign his tender contract tomorrow:
NEW YORK (AP)—Running back Leon Washington, a restricted free agent recovering from a broken right leg, will sign his tender contract offer with the New York Jets, two people familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Wednesday night.
Washington was traveling from his home in Florida to New Jersey on Wednesday night and planned to sign Thursday morning. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been signed.
Washington, a fourth-round pick in 2006, received a second-round tender last month worth $1.759 million.
This was pretty much bound to happen, as there was little to no interest in the injured former Pro Bowler from other teams. So what do you think, folks? Will we be seeing Little Leon on "Hard Knocks", or will the Jets ship him somewhere else by then?

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. This seems to be an issue of how much the Jets want him back at this point as opposed to receiving the draft pick as compensation. If their preference is the latter, does an off the record discussion take place assuring any interested team we won’t match their offer? Y’know, because we really want the 2nd rounder anyway?…
Really tough to gauge where this is headed. But based on Rex’s lukewarm endorsement of Leon’s role in the offense, I’d say we’re not trying to sell him. Call it contrarian thinking or reverse psychology, but when they wanted to move Rhodes they did nothing but talk him up. That’s not happening at all in Leon’s case. Plus we’re thin at RB (unless you believe LT is gonna be LT again, which I certainly don’t) and it would create another need in the draft.
Post-injury Leon vs a second round pick? Glad I don’t have to make this decision..
I hope he stays
but i think he goes

If there was a market for him
wouldn’t he be gone already? Although a 2nd is kind of high asking price.
Seems to me his best chance at exit is part of a package deal.
LOL, who said Mangini’s not a great coach??

I think that this one year tender
will help both him and the Jets, I say keep him and draft a McCluster type guy and see if Leon is really working I mean it’s only a one year deal. Test it

I want him to stay
I condition that with “as long as he is as good as before he was injured”. I still don’t understand what happened to sour the Jets on him. His salary “negotiations” were mild compared to many other players. The Jets should be thankful he didn’t sign his contract last year as it saved them a lot of money.
I say trade him if you can get a third or high fourth...
otherwise keep him and see what he can do. I would love to see them replace him with McCluster or Best in the second but only if he we deal him. I’m very doubtful he will ever be close to his former self coming back from injury, and at 28, I don’t think he will ever be much. But I don’t think its a big enough need right now aside from his returner role (which can always be addressed with our CB need), to waste one of our early picks on.
no way. we have been saying how over valued mid round picks are and how we take advantage of that in trades (holmes, braylon, cromartie). how the hell could we fall for it also and trade our most dynamic player for a 3rd or 4th rounder? nothing lower than the 2nd rounder we asked for initially should move him out of town although i really want him to stay. he does way too much for us on offense and the return game to let him go for scraps.
Although I don’t agree with McBuster or Best, I do think that Judge was on the money with taking a 3rd or high 4th. We don’t know what Leon is, and he isn’t exactly a spring chicken. A third is fair in this draft.
May not matter to most
But I want him to stay. We have a bunch of new players, which I like. I just want to keep some of that old Jets feel. Not that Leon is a 10 year vet or anything, I just don’t want the team to be a revolving door and lose any identity it has. Not sure if I explained that correctly lol.
At the present moment...
Leon can’t even make cuts. He can only run in a straight line. The draft is in a week. Were talking about a guy whos talents went largely unnoticed by the league when he was healthy. I don’t think a 3rd is a possibility at all.
